We Had To Disrupt A Routine

Braylee (7 year old diagnosed with autism and dyspraxia) has been really good about using the bathroom on her own lately. However she has regressed and created a routine which became very rigid. In this case, she stopped using the bathroom functionally and it became a very rigid routine. So we decided to make a change to hopefully break it up to get back on track. #autism #weefam

Its amazing she is repeating words back that makes me smile. My brother has autism so I understand it all. Carlos is going to go everywhefe because with snow he can't undestand 9r see where the grass is suppose to be compares to the sidewalk. Even as an adult or human in general it can be a little bit challenging

She’s been practicing and it’s paying off. It always warms our hearts when we hear her say or even repeat new words. 😊 That’s a good point. We usually shovel him a spot and he’s fairly good about it, but sometimes he doesn’t go there. Oh well I suppose there could be worse things!

While going over this video, I realize we failed in explaining the current bathroom plan fully. To clarify, we put a child lock on the bathroom door to help break up the routine. We still take her if she requests bathroom with her talker (to continue encouragement of using her speaking device). She is also taken to the bathroom at regular intervals throughout the day. Has anyone else experienced rigid routines?

This may work for children who are neurotypical. Neurodivergent children aren’t the same. This isn’t do something and they get a reward, if she gets used to a reward she may start using it as a stim even more if she believes she gets a reward. It tells them good job for behavior that may not be acceptable or healthy.

My daughter is independent as far as going in the bathroom, pulling down her underwear,wiping by herself when she pees. But she loves water do she used to play in the toilet n the sink n get into products. Now she just turns the water on n off n loves to wash her hands but they get dry n red n cracked on her knuckles, particularly in the winter. She also can't leave any soap suds in the sink after washing her hands so she'll keep running the water til they're gone. Love your puzzle piece n 🐝 plugs.

0:49 - our son is fixated on curtains as well. He likes to have some sort of control over his environment but will get overstimulated if he is allowed to overindulge in self stimulatory behavior. When that happens he will rip them down and ask for someone to put them back up. We went though a lot of curtain rods, transitioned to a tension rod before eventually just going with velcro. It was a battle we had to concede, but we also had to put a plexiglass sheet over the glass and nail the window shut because it was becoming a 24/7 thing.

That’s how Braylee gets with things sometimes as well. She is just too excited or interested and then it gets overwhelming and causes a meltdown or behaviors. That’s great problem solving to find a good solution for you guys though! Quite the handy man!

ok, in response of #realtalk. I completely understand and feel your pain in having to fix the toilet, David. My 15 yo autistic son (who has a dual diagnosis of IDD and ASD) has always had an obsession with water play and teaching him hygiene continues to be a challenge for us, his therapists and his aides. Eventually he learned to request it but it just means that he requests to go ALL the time so the next challenge is to enable the appropriate behavior without enabling the inappropriate behaviors. As a Gen Xer it has been my tendency to helicopter parent and that just reinforced the bad behaviors so that obsessions became a means of getting our attention. The challenge has been to analyze the reason for the bad behaviors and coming up with appropriate alternative play so that we can redirect him from damaging things or causing harm to himself or others. To this day he still surprises people whenever he gets the urge to splash or bathe because the water stim is so powerful that the behaviors are nearly as sudden and intense as a meltdown. I also feel that there need to be pica and obsession friendly oral and skin care products. Hand soap and sanitizer is just as hard on the digestive system as it is in chapping and cracking skin. BTW, I've had to actually replace all the toilets in my home a couple of times because of clogs and cracked tank lids and whatnot. Word to the wise: the eco friendly toilets are more of a liability than a help and the "high powered" American Standard ones have the opposite problem but are no less fragile. The best advice I can say is don't skimp; get a Kohler if you can afford it because the tank mount is not porcelain on porcelain so it won't crack. It won't flush gold balls but you don't want that. One time a toy didn't get stuck in the toilet's S trap (which at least can be snaked out) but instead got lodged in the main storm drain and flooded our basement after becoming wrapped in toilet paper over time. It could have cost us thousands but thankfully I was referred to an honest master plumber so it only cost $100 in the end; we didn't have to dig up our yard for a little green army man who'd gone spelunking.
@TheWeeFamily
@TheWeeFamily 4 жыл бұрын
Great insight on the toilet repair and recommendations! It is hard when the sensory need for something is so high. She is drawn to water, but not quite to that extent. She will sit and wash her hands in the sink all day if we let her. Pica friendly products would be nice. Ideally, we would like her to not eat the non edible things in general but we try to go with the more natural products anyway since it may not be possible to keep her away from that in all other circumstances besides home. The attention seeking part of behaviors is probably one that we struggle with more than others because sometimes it’s so hard to not give the attention when behaviors go on depending what it is. David lived in a house in the past where they had to dig up the yard, that is never any fun.

Hello. Recently found your channel/ videos. I appreciate the candid commentary and sharing you do. Our daughter seems to be quite similar in behavior and verbal communication levels as your daughter (and also diagnosed). and when she was going on 4, had a massive meltdown on a transatlantic flight that was longer than estimated. She actually laid down in the back of the plane screaming, kicking, biting, etc. I think it lasted 45 minutes but maybe it was less- time seems to stand still during those moments. Like your daughter, it wasn’t her fault. She hit a wall and the time change didn’t help. We haven’t flown since but mostly due to Covid. We decided to take the plunge again and will be flying to Europe this July and we certainly have concerns. I really appreciated your comments about how the meltdown is only really a small portion of the trip / experience. Doesn’t ruin the trip though for a time, that memory of the plane meltdown lasted with my wife. Not our daughter, anyway, I am happy to see others like yourself traveling and sharing as it makes me more confident and comfortable to do so as well. We have an older daughter who, along with her autistic sister, deserves to experience what the world has to offer so off we go!

I also have autism and I really have a lot of respect for your daughter. I used to be very active when I was little and I misunderstood things (now). And when I became friends with someone, I told her that I had autism and had a hard time understanding some things. And she can't touch me unexpectedly either, I told her too. Not that I am totally fearful but I can't handle unexpected touches, loud noises and crowds ..... Months later she suddenly started to scold me about my autism. She scolded with various things such as atistic pig. I don't type the rest because they were even more rude. Sorry if my English is bad but I live in Belgium and I still have to learn English at school. Btw i love you guys channel

No worries about your English. 🙂 I am so sorry your friend did that. It’s fully understandable to ask for patience and have boundaries that way. Unexpected physical touch can be really hard for some with sensory processing issues. You don’t need that kind of negativity in your life.

I never though much of OCD until the second grade when I would put my papers down on the table (Cause I would be finished with my work) and these girls would sit there, fixing the papers. There would be some kid who would say “They act like they have OCD” and that’s when I first knew about it! It’s cool knowing what actual OCD is.

OMG my 2 yes old does that. It's a stem.... Wow I had no idea. Flush paper all day. His hand washing too. He is still in diapers. Thought flushing would encourage him to potty and poo. Refuses to go in potty or training potty
@TheWeeFamily
@TheWeeFamily 4 жыл бұрын
For Braylee the hand washing is stimming and sensory seeking but the overall routines are more OCD tendencies because she has to do things in a certain way and won’t stop and has to redo it if it was done differently. Braylee doesn’t have an issue with going, it’s just that she was using the bathroom as part of a routine when she didn’t need to go and it was largely excessive.

At what age did she start requesting or letting ya know when she needs to go to the bathroom because currently my son will go use it only when we take him if we don’t take him he will just go in his pull up so I’m not sure if he still doesn’t recognize when he needs to go or how to communicate it back to us to take him....happy new year!!
@TheWeeFamily
@TheWeeFamily 4 жыл бұрын
Braylee still does not consistently request bathroom, it’s hit or miss. Most of it is still us taking her to the bathroom ourselves. We have wondered the same thing about if she recognizes the need to go or not. Try giving him access to a PEC card to show you or teaching him the sign language for it? That’s if he doesn’t have a way to communicate with you guys that he needs to go already.

I’m pretty sure I have ocd? Is there such thing as ocd ticks? Because I have that kinda thing and also if I walk pas,t something my brain is like “hey go touch that until you have to pull yourself away from it because you can’t stop” and then when I don’t do it I so this breathing thing where I breath out all my air and cough. Another thing is like!dont judge me! Doing a frog throat thingy because my “brain tells me to do” and it’s embarrassing...c tapping on things and making noises and stuff like that. Mostly repeated words until it sound “ good enough “ and spelling things out in asl while flapping my hands and I look disturbed.......last thing is typing on computers in class AGRESSIVLEY typing and re typing words and it’s annoying. I don’t wanna like “self diagnose” but I’m pretty sure i have *something*

Our daughter went through a "phase" where she was flushing it all the time, and then flushing it for others.(MOM LIFE) At first we thought "yay, she's showing interest in the potty" but it soon became a thing for her. We are very fortunate that she eventually got over that phase. Once in awhile she will come a running the "help" someone out (LOL) but again she's moved on. Thank goodness. On another note, you know you're parents when.. you stay home and play Monopoly for NYE. LOL Just kidding. We didnt even make it to midnight. Didn't have a cocktail either! Lame!!!

We were so excited about her progress too but then it turned into a rigid routine. I’m sure she would do like your daughter and phase out of it but we just wanted to try to curb it sooner than waiting it out. Hahaha that’s the truth. Nothing good happens after dark and we have no business going out/downtown 😂😂

I may seem very ignorant but I want to learn more. I have realized some stims are good and some arent as good. What may trigger the stims, specifically the bathroom routine? If this is a sensitive topic I am sorry for invading. I try my best to be respectful and hope that this is a respectful way in asking
@TheWeeFamily
@TheWeeFamily 4 жыл бұрын
No worries, you’re coming from a good place and we aren’t super easily offended. We would rather woolen ask and be willing to learn! ❤️ So different people have different opinions on stimming. We don’t mind her stimming at all unless it hurts herself or others (which none of her stims have done). In this instance her stimming is borderline obsessive compulsive more than just stimming and she’s “stuck” in the routine so we just had to break it up a bit because it can be problematic when we don’t allow her to follow through with it and it isn’t functional bathroom usage so we just try to redirect her by stopping free access. Plus, having her ask to use the bathroom is also good practice of communication. Hopefully that made sense
