I use potassium nitrate powder to clean the metal in my first melt before I flux it in my second

Hi mate few questions if ok Can I melt gold with a mapp torch and gas Or with a roofers torch and big bottle One last one mate I’ve got 24k gold but wanting to melt it to 9k with copper and silver Can I melt all these at home with mentioned above or will I need oxy gas and torch ? I have heat bricks and crucible Thanks

I don't know what mapp gas is u can use normal camping / bbq gas

what would you do if you were to have left the solder in? Before I even knew anything about melting down gold, I had a small batch of scrap jewelry that I melted down to a little ingot and noticed it flakes and cracks easily. Is it completely ruined?

opalkitten jewels hi if you have solder in the metal when u start making something out of it the metal will split and crack also it’s harder to get a good polish

Forgive me for probably being a thicko but what’s happened to the other 62.5% of the metal that’s not gold? Has it just burned away?

Hi Barnaby Dearman no not quite all gold comes out the ground as 24ct and is mixed with other alloys to make it 22ct 18ct and 9ct And as we started with only 9ct we ended up with just 9ct and the amount of gold in 9ct is 37.5 %

Is the colour of 9ct gold primarily a result of the alloys or are you actually still seeing gold (somewhat diluted)when looking at it?

xeephran when start making something out of the melt up and give it a final polish it looks the same as before it was melted up

The colour is still the gold, but very diluted. Just compare regular old brass with 9-10 karat gold and you’ll see the gold looks more saturated. Just don’t go comparing it to 18K or you’ll regret using 9-10K :)

I'm having some problems when melting some of my 9k scrap. It's going rose coloured after melting.. is this normal or are these bits not Gold? Thanks

James Toghill hi it’s normal it’s the copper in the 9ct if u was to polish the melt up it’ll go back to gold colour It’s nothing to worry about

The reason is you are overheating the gold and the alloys mostly zinc is burnt off, stop as soon as the gold it's melted and it will be fine. Goldsmith for 53 years.
