Welcome to Dean of Doom, the show where we give grades to classic and contemporary Doom wads. Why? Because ranking things is fun. Today’s episode will be dedicated to Memento Mori, a 1995 megawad finalized in ‘96 that was made by a team of twenty-one designers, spearheaded by Thomas and Denis Möller who comprised a mapping duo called The Innocent Crew (TiC), with notable contributions from Tom Mustaine and the Brothers Casali. As I told the Delinquent, Memento Mori is an undisputed classic: it was rated the top wad of 1996 by Doom bigwigs Linguica and Mike ‘Cyb’ Watson, and it earned the rare distinction of being included among the seven pwads eligible for Compet-N speedrunning. Rare for its time, Memento Mori also has an original score composed by the one and only Mark Klem; some of these tracks are still used in custom wads to this day. MM is also a rarity for the special consideration it gives to cooperative multiplayer campaigns. The co-op trend didn’t necessarily catch on, with deathmatch being the vastly more popular multiplayer format, but Memento Mori’s innovation on that front is still appreciable today.
Thanks to ‪@decino‬ and ‪@DoomKid‬ for joining me this episode: it was a pleasure fragging with you both!

I've always wanted more WADs with multiplayer playing an important role, as I feel many popular releases either don't bother with it, or have it playing second fiddle, possibly to the point of breaking, to the single player progression. Now that I know what's in Memento Mori, I'm not so sure. The whole pack seemed way too close to the edge of oblivion that most busted, horrendous, and unloved 90s maps fall into, but as a step above said nightmares, I can definitely acknowledge it holds its own. It's really cool seeing the production pick way up in this one, from getting the guests to record their screens, to the contrast of PE sounds with the delinquent's voice, and I don't believe anyone has yet to comment on how seamlessly the music is spliced into the presentation (and also the consistency of MtPain suiciding after every Icon death). It's clear that the role of being a figurative powerhouse of Doom representation is not taken for granted.

Excellent video too MtPain, I’ve been hearing about MM for years since I joined the Doom community, and now I can see why it’s so highly spoken of, but I have to agree with your ranking. The wad isn’t that great all things considered, but some of the maps are a treat.

MM is for sure "certified hood classic", multiplayer is quite interesting and that bit with Delinquent was awesome(talking about bullying him with MM after what he did in HR1 episode? ( *wink wink* *nodge nodge* ), plus those puns on map 16 were absolutely burnt

Fun fact: I used to *enjoy* Map12, but holy fuck was I a dumb kid. You can die on the first staircase that you raise up because it can crush you into the top of the thing at the top. WHY? Fun fact: I *also* used to enjoy Map25, but again, I think it's because again, I was a dumb kid. I used to speedrun it and Map12 back in the day and I understand why people just don't, normally. I'd argue 12 is worse than 25 personally, but both have a L O T wrong with them. Having played this back in the early 2000s, this was a lot of fun back then. We didn't have the evolution of mapping that we do today and it really doesn't hold up anymore. I think, personally, the best maps in the set are Map02, Map03, Map04, Map14, Map15, Map23, Map24, Map26, and Map30. The worst of them being Map11, Map12, Map18, Map25, Map29. Everything else is either needlessly convoluted or flatly mediocre. It's an absolutely dated experience I feel people should play through *ONCE* to see where Doom mapping came from. There's at least that reason to play it. Lots of good ideas that just didn't work out, and given the time in which this was put together, I'm not sure there was enough creativity, engine knowledge, and inspiration to draw from, to pull them off. If this were released maybe 10 - 15 years later, the co-op stuff could easily have been worked in a lot better with a bit more work. I'd like to think though the reason that co-op was so heavily prominent here is that this is during some of the prime of Doom's limelight, so it only made sense back then to cater to playing with friends in some fashion. I can at least admire that much. It's a relic of it's time, for sure, but 100% has not aged at all. Regardless of all of this, it's still an important part of Doom history and I appreciate the coverage of it. For once, I don't have too many anecdotes to share about this particular project. I think if you like maps where you have to explore a lot, sort of like Eternal Doom, it might not be as bad, but it's awful if you're a completionist. Edited to add in that the exploit mentioned in Map31 can only be done once, and if you miss it in single player, you miss out on half the map. Which is just... stupid. I should know from experience. Can't tell you how many speedrunning attempts are ruined because that exploit sucks ass.
@TheWolfgangGrimmer
@TheWolfgangGrimmer 2 жыл бұрын
"can only be done once, and if you miss it in single player, you miss out on half the map" Well, AFAIK the exploit itself is unintended, the idea is was that MAP32 would be purposefully made unreachable unless you play co-op. Which is a concept I don't really like either, but it's something to keep in mind when appraising the secret levels.

See, a few years ago the Doomworld MegaWAD Club played MM through as well. There was a lot of complaining, and I distinctly remember MAP25, a worthy dunce cap winner if ever there were one, going down like a cup of cold sick. It’s really good that the classic orthodoxy is challenged, precisely because of what you (Dean) said - these “classics” are products of their time and are to be advanced beyond and overcome. Hopefully one day WADs like this will be relegated to curiosities, rather than top off the recommendations list from people of a certain vintage. I’ve been around forever, but even then this is before my time and was outdated when I signed up! Really good episode, Dean! Keep up the good work. Or take a break, if that’s the time of year!

As someone who loves Doom 2 and TNT, I love the crunchy 90's aesthetic and energy. But having tried to play this several times, the design is just so grindy and confusing. I respect the effort and creativity; these guys walked so Doomkid, Valkiriforce, and the DTWID team could run and I'm genuinely so thankful to it for that. But for me, it's just so dull. If I want to play a 90's wad without having to play a 90's wad, I'll Play Anomaly report, Rowdy Rudy's Revenge, or D2ISO.

Yeeeeah, I can see why it would take so long to write up a proper lecture on this. I thought I hadn't given MM a fair shot because my first run of it was after "finishing" Sunlust (I played until the very start of map30 on HMP, got lost, went off to play other things and ended up losing the save file) and it bored me into moving off to play other wads, but I see I was not that far off the mark. If Professor Pain gives it the same grade as Hell Revealed 2, you know it's an old bag that wasn't necessarily good back in its heyday either. Memento Mori has a few flashes in the pan, but overall it's best remembered by confusing progression, poor game design direction, cheap traps, janky blend of singleplayer and co-op (for real, noclip is _mandatory_ if you want to see everything in singleplayer), being undeserving of Mark Klem's neato-burrito soundtrack, and for odd reasons, many rooms looking like bathrooms. I blame the overuse of the new ceramic tile textures. I have no bias for it and no love for it either. And I should point out, continuous play and carryover gear MURDER this wad's difficulty - I can easily give it a D- if played this way. One thing that needs mentioning is, Memento Mori came with a booklet of sorts. The Doomwiki has info on how to access it, but most of the nonsense is actually explained in the briefings you get for each level in it. A particularly cool one that you'll only see there is, Memento Mori is the codename of the military operation you're in! Lucky for us, Memento Mori 2 is FAAAAAR better. It's still jank and has its, ahem, _moments,_ but the vast majority of it is just plain fun, even if not super challenging. Trust me, MM2 has zero nostalgia value for me, and I still *_HIGHLY_* recommend it. EDIT: Oh yeah, massive shoutout to the assistant professors for this lecture! Some extra perspective outside of the usual MtPain method is great fun, and live commentary banter is always appreciated. That's how you keep a classroom engaged! (Well, aside from the Delinquent, but his engagement is a nerf dart to the back of his horn. Little dink.)

Played through this for the first time recently, thought I was having a stroke playing Map25. A lot of other maps were a bit too big on the "haha switch hunt" gimmick, especially when they don't toggle something nearby so you have to predict what they're supposed to do. Not as bad as some other megawads (Hate Eternal Doom because of this), hoping the sequel is a bit snazzier. Love the co-op crossover stuff though, that's great to see. Also TIL Doomkid is Australian too. Ayyyy~

Memento Mori is best enjoyed after playing through a bunch of 1994 WADs, because it feels like the consensus on what makes a good Doom level is starting to coalesce, and although you still get the Wizardry style mazes, the hewing too close to what Romero had already done, and the oddball experiments that don't work at all, in terms of intensity and visuals it's a big step forward. You're pretty on the money, though. I'm a lot more charitable to it in general, and I think that MAP23 and MAP18 especially are worth playing regardless of the rest of the WAD, and the fight at the start of MAP28 is such a ride that it almost makes up for the hour or so of dead air.

I never played Memento Mori, but looking at the maps compared to what I played of Memento Mori 2, the difference in quality feels pretty astounding. Also, all the commentary on references and homages to original Doom maps makes me even more interested in an episode covering Doom the Way id Did.

Will be honest, was holding off on this MegaWAD mostly because I wasn't sure how its co-op leaning design would effect the gameplay on single player, so it was nice to see you drop a review of this one. Stellar review as always, MtPain. This season has been quite the fantastic showcase.

Great to see this old fossil of a wad even despite its mediocrities. IMO, Memento Mori 2 is far better than the first one and I'd love to see it eventually.

Wow, I can't wait for an episode about MM2! That was the first time I saw the "impossible" bridges in Doom and my mind was totally blown away. I also liked that in deathmatch many levels were totally different (the maps contained separate locations for DM mode).

A very fine episode overall. The Delinquent is always a highlight for me, good guy cameos, and a sharp grading marker for the stinker maps.

I played through this a couple of years ago. I was using the Doom 3 mod and I genuinely had a good time. Twilight Labs was definitely my favourite. Love the layout and design and how they brought that together using old software. Good to see collaborations. Good video

Loving this show so far, really great stuff and really intuitive in terms of how you break down the levels, you're clearly passionate about this kind of stuff and it shows. In the fashion of 90's megawads, one lesser-known wad I'd really like to see on this channel is Herian 2, a one-man project from 1999 with some surprisingly immersive atmosphere and effective story-driven plot. If you like puzzles, you'll particularly enjoy it, but if you don't, it... probably won't be as enjoyable.

This episode is like a Dean of Doom blockbuster ! I didn't expect you to cover MM, but I suppose it's a mandatory WAD to play for your Doom culture. You're very harsh with 90's maps, haha. I understand that it can be hard to come back to these old maps when you are used to the high quality modern maps... and actually, that's why I'm glad that, when I really started to play Pwads, I made a list of Pwads that looked interesting to me and I decided to discover them in the chronological order, so I could see their quality according to the context of when they were released, without being biased by modern standards of mapping. And most maps in MM are way above the standard maps from the 1994-1996 period (not only considering Doom Pwads, but also commercial Doom-likes from this era), some of them even being amongst my favorite maps of the 90's (I absolutely love map 15, the Casali maps, and map 28 also!). But yeah, these maps certainly suffer from poor design choices that were common back then, so I totally understand your feeling about them. The cryptic nature of these maps is something that was so common that, to be honest, I didn't even pay attention to it the first time I played MM (well, except for some maps of course). It was normal to me, and I'm kinda used to it to be honest (to the point that I consider Hexen to be no confusing at all for instance, since I understand what the level designers had in mind most of the time). So, yeah, all that text to say that most of the flaws of these maps were just common level design mistakes from an era where FPS were still young... and considering this context, Memento Mori is a lot of fun and a great showcase of what the mid 90's had to offer at their best in terms of level design ! Now, I'm curious to know what you'd think of MM2 if you ever decide to review it, since a lot of players consider it better than MM, but the maps in MM2 are even longer and more cryptic than the ones in MM, so I never liked the second MM as much as the first one. I'd love to hear your thoughts about that one day ! I hope what I wrote is clear, because I'm not a native English speaker, and sometimes I wonder if I'm not too confusing, haha.
