What I also love about this scene is that, unlike today where it would show you visuals of the event as he describes it (Watch when he describes Gallifrey in series 3) this simply allows the camera to stay on Jon and Katy as he tells the story. And you don't get bored, because they allow Jon's acting to enthrall the viewer on it's own! Storytelling in it's most basic form. You picture the events for yourself. Love it.

Okay, so far, the first three Doctors have had profound moments with one of their companions, with brilliantly delivered dialogues by their actors. The First Doctor with his farewell to Susan, The Second Doctor with his comfort to Victoria, and The Third Doctor with his wisdom to Jo. I do hope that I will get to see the same with all the rest of the Doctors in the future as well. p.s. if you comment, please no spoilers for the new _or_ classic series, thank you. :)

I feel like Cinderella kicked out of the ballroom door. I want to work in a library, but any I find aren't heiring, or are dragging their feet and are possibly worse off than my current job. I've cried nearly after every shift in self-pity, and only just started this job last month. I really needed to hear the Doctor; I could listen to him all day.

thanks for that fam :') i'm pretty sure it was the day he looked into the untempered schism. all he could see was the negativity of the universe, the hate and fear and pain, so it painted his world grey. but when he saw that the universe was truly beautiful DESPITE the negatives, he began the journey toward the doctor we know today- loving the universe, protecting people and planets, saving whoever he can. i think it's a pretty beautiful thing. what also fits into this is the idea that in the time war, the doctor's view goes back to grey. he stops being able to see and love the world because there is just so much pain around him. (also, the war doctor is canonically colorblind, which i think is interesting.) fighting the nestene consciousness with rose was what slowly gave him back the "color" to life.

You too? I love how they give us an answer while still leaving a tad of ambiguity ("Why's he always crying?" "You know why.", although the reason could simply be the other kids' implied meanness/bullying; See that line in "The Empty Child" about being the only one left out in the cold) I immediately went, "and the next morning, the old Hermit's gonna comfort him.", imagining the conversation, running around with the kid!master, watching that meteor shower with his father, who probably wasn't present very often... (if those ppl in EoT were indeed his parents, they were important busy council members and thus probably not there very often.) We finally got to SEE that place, at first without realizing that it indeed IS mount Perdition and the surrounding fields, obviously a bit more... destroyed, with deserts instead of the red fields and described by the Master. Gets even better when you remember that the Fourth Doctor also has a scene mentioning the Hermit, when he's trapped somewhere with Romana. He mentions that the Hermit ended up telling him ghost stories later. You can just imagine little!Doctor thinking, "If I systematically learn everything there is to know about monsters and how to ward them off, I can totally handle this." 2000 years later... "WE SURRENDER!" * mystical monster is stopped in the nick of time *

Moffat has retconned it by saying in an interview for Doctor Who Magazine that in the wilderness the sky dips to that of a light blue. It's an awful retcon but it's still a retcon. But since there is little information on either side you cannot claim that it isn't on Gallifrey because we just don't know enough about where the barn is located.

I think the point is that the doctor in his darkest of moments saw the light, the freedom of his situation, he could see all life had to offer outside of his narrowed prospective. Basically all he could think about was the worst day of his life, but by simply looking at the vibrancy of this daisy he saw that life was filled with choices and joys that could be seen if only he allowed it to be seen with everything else life entails.

2:45 I think people are missing this. When he says "Yes, I laughed too when I first heard it," he's letting slip that he first heard this story from someone else. In other words, it didn't really happen to him. That tracks, of course, because the story is quite unrealistic. If someone is deeply distraught, you aren't going to cheer them up by just pointing to a flower. However, just because it's not an anecdote from the Doctor's life doesn't mean there's no wisdom in it. The idea that your subjective appreciation of the world around you can vary and make a huge difference holds true. Also, the point was to lighten Jo's mood, which he succeeded at.

As much as I hate the Hybrid storyline and think it really damages the established backstory, I like to tie all the pieces together and think that after learning of the Hybrid through the untempered schism (or learning of it before and not wanting to see or become the hybrid through the shcism), he ran to the old man under the tree for guidance. I also like to think that the Doctor didn't and still doesn't know for sure who is the hybrid and that, thinking Susan was the hybrid, he brought her with him away from Gallifrey and later left her somewhere safe so the timelords would never find her.

So the house on the mountainside, was that before or after you lived in the barn? Or are Gallifreyan mountains hard to distinguish from wastelands?

he talked about his father in the movie way later, and i think it's safe to say he grew up with his parents and family in House Lungbarrow. though in Listen the man and woman discuss sending him to the army, meaning they're at least his caretakers if not his actual parents, and this is BEFORE his initiation into the academy. so....... i think it's safe to say that doctor who has no established canon. he's half human, but also a high lord, but also poor, but also rich, but also an orphan????? so much shit

I know it isn't canon (thankfully). And it sort of does... According to the Loom theory, Time Lords are "woven" fully grown. The Doctor would hardly refer to himself as a "little boy" if this were the case.

the new show lost the relaxing calmness of the old show... I Just almost fell in a trance listining to 3rds every word.. if the new series looked more like 60s or early/mid 70s who in terms of atmosphere and camera movement often. It might have that element of DW again. maybe the episode formats need to become 28 minutes or 33.. 4×30 minutes would make for longer build up etc and make for longer tv broadcast of a series
@MoniqueFromPlymouth
