Into the Dalek is an action-packed Dalek story that features several callbacks to previous Dalek episodes, particularly Classic Who stories. In this video, we are going to take a look at how Into the Dalek remakes a great scene from Resurrection of the Daleks but modernises it for the new era.
All footage used is the property of the BBC. Music by Frank Klepacki

The battle scenes of Into the Dalek prove that a bigger budget isn't necessarily needed to create great effects. Seriously, the direction of this episode is bloody gorgeous. Not only are there some simply incredible shots, but the use of miniatures was a really smart idea. I know practical vs CGI has become quite a tiresome debate, but these scenes simply wouldn't have looked as good as they are with purely computer generated imagery.

I actually didn’t realise these references. How the hell did I miss them?!?

I’m so glad I wasn’t the only person who thought the Daleks boarding the space station was inspired by resurrection of the Daleks

Excellent vid as always Bumps. Does anyone else wish they'd update the Dalek design? The bronze Daleks are fine, but they're just a bit... Tired? They're nearly twenty years old at this point. I wouldn't mind a return to the silver/blue or silver/black colouration of earlier serials with a redesign.

There are a lot of scenes like this I like seeing re-done. The meeting of the clans scene from Blood of the Daleks that was recreated on the bridge in Revolution of the Daleks, the heart-to-heart between the doctor's companion and a dalek prisoner from Dalek and Jubilee, the dalek revival and making more reinforcements from Power of the Daleks and Revolution of the Daleks.

The Parting of the Ways also feels like it’s referencing it in the defence of Satellite 5. Considering that RTD also referenced the scene in It’s a Sin, he probably really likes it. Into the Dalek was refreshing at the time, because I had started to really wish for another battle scene like that. Something about Humans trying in vain to protect their ship from the unstoppable force of The Daleks just works so well. On that note, I think one thing that both scenes improve on is just how relentless The Daleks are, Resurrection having them retreat as soon as two Daleks blow up was always a bit disappointing to me.

Brilliant! The episode isn't perfect, and it's bogged down by the post-intro Danny Pink/Clara scenes, but all in all I think its one of the most underrated Dalek stories, and its definitely the best Dalek story of the Moffat era imo

Yeah I really hope someday resurrection of the daleks gets an official new effects feature were the human characters guns actually shoot lasers. I even made a fan edit of the story myself were I added FX to the human characters guns as well as updating the dalek gun beam FX

We’ve only had 5 mid-series Dalek stories in the revival. I count Eve as mid-series, grouping the specials with Flux, and Resolution and Revolution function as finales (Chibnall himself has referred to Resolution as a finale). Mid-series Dalek stories are a cool treat to me because it’s cool to see the big bads of the Whoniverse star in an episode that isn’t looking to make a larger impact by kicking off or ending a series arc, but is purely focused on telling an interesting story. Into the Dalek is very satisfying in that way, and felt like a modernized Classic story in all the best ways. And why had Phil Ford not done more episodes?

I always thought the boarding scene from into the Dalek was referencing the iconic stormtrooper boarding party at the start of a new hope, but then maybe the scene from resurrection of the Daleks was referencing it too

Resurrection was definitely referencing it to an extent, the show was constantly trying to replicate Star Wars during that period.

Thank you for making this video! I’ve always loved this story and rank it as one of my favourite Dalek stories, and I’ll never forget watching the epic scene where they burst into the corridor for the first time, with that gorgeous synth music and amazing directing. Such a low-key but brilliant callback!

I think three other issues the boarding scene has are 1. That we hear about 4 different gun sound effects, so it’s really difficult to tell who is firing where, with no added CGI effects (an issue with the story as a whole) 2. That there are only a few Dalek props and two mercenaries behind them which makes their numbers feel too small and less impactful for how the scene is supposed to be. 3. At one point the Daleks dialogue kind of blends together so that it’s inaudible and you can’t make out what they are saying in the slightest. I think Destiny of the Daleks has similar issues such as the lack of CGI effects such as the Movellan Hand Blasters. Luckily that story has the option of improved CGI effects which make it look way better. Xx

Resurrection of the Daleks was the first classic story I saw in its entirety when I was about 12 or so, and at that point I was loving it but also laughing at how dated some of the acting and special effects were, now as an adult who knows better I'm aware that those things are part of the charm that Classic Who has, but I have noticed that part you mentioned where 2 of the Daleks sort of talk over each other and it is very distinctive lol xx

@@azarothshadowsoul ohh yeah Ik ahah. I love the story despite it’s dated effects and awfully confusing plot lol 😂. Nonetheless it’s a brilliant Dalek story with a lot of violence and brilliant Dalek action xx

I'd like the idea of a dalek having a big chunk blown off and seemingly dead but it still marches on trying to kill the enemy Think that could be a creepy scene and like with the dalek sewers made up of daleks refusing to die, the idea they keep moving and killing no matter what feeds into that idea

There are several SFX update versions online of Resurrection which improve it considerably. Enter the Dalek does the boarding well though.

In my Dalek series idea during the final episode I have a boarding scene that is similar to this, plus the boarding of the Tantivin IV from Star wars. The defenders trying to fight off the Daleks as they come in and just wipe the floor with them.

I was never the biggest fan of into the Dalek, but the two videos you’ve made about this episode praising specific scenes shows that they are good at showing the full forces of the Dalek race, just not the best at the story aspect

Something that has always bugged me why are the weapons used by the humans in Resurrection unable to kill Daleks, you think guarding their creator would mean they would be able to hold off a dalek attack.

IIRC it had been so long since the Daleks bothered to go after Davros the humans had basically come to the conclusion they were never going to and thus had let the security become lax (since he was the only prisoner on the ship) this is why the ship he's on is barely functioning by the time the Daleks finally attack

I don’t think I can choose between them as I like them both a lot and also I didn’t really see the parallels between the dalek ship bridge in remembrance and into the dalek till u pointed it out and yea it’s very similar
