There is an interesting back story to this. It was felt by producers - and perhaps critics- or critics that noticed or had an interest in Dr Who, that to date all the female companions had been portrayed as largely squeamish, less heroic, and almost always in need of 'rescuing' sort of echoing the old fashioned image of the 'maiden tied to the railway track'. The character of Sarah Jane Smith was carefully introduced as 'feisty' gusty reporter with a nose for a good story and a drive and determination to get to the bottom of a mystery. The scene you refer to is an example of this. You will notice that in her earlier episodes her character was bold, and lent herself quite well to facing up to monsters and aliens without cowering behind the Dr's overcoat. However you will notice that in later episodes nearer towards the end of her time in Dr Who, the Sarah Jane Smith character was becoming more like the previous female characters.

I don't understand why people keep arguing about which Doctor is better. All of them have been brilliant in their own ways. Granted, the only ones I've seen much of are the third, fourth, seventh, ninth, tenth, and eleventh, but based on these and the little I've seen of the other ones, I think that each one has shaped what the show is, and each one played the part beautifully. I wish everyone would just chill out.
@Billibab
@Billibab 10 жыл бұрын
they are all brilliant, it's sad how some are skipped by new viewers too. some skip Eccleston (I don't understand why, he was fantastic) and a lot skip the Classic Doctor Who(I think they should at least watch the 3rd and 4th and 7th to understand some jokes and when they bring back things from the 1st-7th doctors)
@cinnamoncleric
@cinnamoncleric 10 жыл бұрын
I think they skip Eccleston because he's slower paced then Tennant or Smith. At least at first he is. And I agree, they should at least watch some of the classic. Whatever's on Netflix would be acceptable, you know? It's not like you have to go out and buy all of the super expensive collections.

They harked back to DW's original intent, which was to orient a preteen audience to both (British) history and science in an entertaining way -- making a few teaching points without being obviously an educational show which would turn kids off. Recall that Dr. #1's first two companions were a history teacher and a science teacher -- not by accident. But the Daleks soon appeared, and their popularity meant that the show veered from its original focus to become more sci-fi/fantasy in nature. This is one of the few plots that came back to the mark.

Time Warrior is a superb story, one that I personally put in the DW all-time top ten. Intelligent, fun, non-stop action script by Robert Holmes. A great stand-alone story that can serve as a perfect introduction to WHO as it entertains all age groups with its wild mix of history, Sci-Fi and action-adventure. (Important to an American fan in winning new DW fans!) I cannot praise the DVD enough, as it is loaded with extras in addition to the superb story itself.

Yes, it is a good one to start the uninitiated viewer with. Pretty much has the whole of Doctor Who in a nutshell in this one story, starts off with a new companion and doesn't really depend upon a lot of backstory to get rolling with the plot. Plus you've got the incomparable Jon Pertwee here and equally incomparable Elisabeth Sladen and there's the whole season following up on this episode to showcase these two as well as UNIT and some of the main aliens in the series, including the Daleks, and lead up to introducing the idea of regeneration at the end with "Planet Of The Spiders". But even on its own, "The Time Warrior" is indeed an ideal introductory episode for the newbie.

+Green Whovian How about when Alfie Moon spent a whole episode searching for a condom after happily finding out Kat Slater has feelings for him? That actually felt like a humorous episode. Then later that year after things didn't initially workout between him and Kat, he gatecrashes Kat and Andy Hunter's wedding and wins Kat back. Then the Christmas episode ends with everyone celebrating after Alfie and Kat finally get married (while Phil Mitchell quietly goes on the run from the police). It's some moments like these I choose to remember from when I watched EastEnders (even if the show was already getting depressing around that time).
