I grew up in the Valley until I was 10. I remember going to the Carriage Inn at Burbank and Sepulveda with my grandparents when I slept over. It was rare and special to get to go out to breakfast, but I was always bummed because my grandparents made me walk there with them for the exercise. Crazy that I remember that after 40 plus years. Thanks for these videos - it's a special walk down memory lane each time you make one and tell your stories.

In the 70's and early 80's that Popeye's was a Pioneer Chicken. There was a builder's supply store there, I think it may have been a Neiman Reed's Lumber City? The closest Builder's Emporium to where you are at there was the Builder's on Sherman Way and White Oak.

I lived at Victory and Tampa from 1956-1964 and saw Tampa Park (now Loehman's Plaza) grow from a vacant lot. Originally there was a Shopping Bag market, ET Grant, Woolworth, Owl Drug Store, and a Red-Carpet Gourmet liquor store where you said the Winchell Doughnuts was after it closed. There was a Chevron gas station where the Carl's Jr is now on the corner. I saw the LA RIver paved right behind that shopping center while I lived there. Tampa and Vanowen had a Piggly Wiggly market. Builders was NE corner of Shaerman Way and WHite Oak.

"See our new look soon"... It's a shame they've done this to your McDonald's location. The new buildings are hideous and just aren't the same. It's a shame none of the old style buildings are being preserved. Still sad they remodeled my childhood McDonald's as well and haven't been there since then (since I don't live in Southern California at the moment). I was shocked when I saw the change on Google maps. Thanks for sharing your memories! These videos help me get through my homesickness missing California! :)

I went to the school (St. Catherine's) right there by Miss Donuts, and my brother and I would go there after school when we had some spare change. This was in the early 80's so if my memory serves me correctly it was either a Winchell's or a Yum Yum, not 100% sure which one.

We used to go to Liquor stores to play video games they always had 2-3 games the first ones I remember was defender, Asteroid's, and Pac-man. Later I remember playing Dragons Slayer. They also had lot of candy for about $5 could play 8-10 games and go home with pocket full of candy. I remember Now and later were 5 cents this was the early 1980s I was 11 years old in 1980 about the time I started leaving the neighborhood on a bike.

My cousins who lived in Van Nuys weren’t into eating doughnuts. They would take us to get bagels. They would also take us to Winchell’s. Maybe it’s one that you’ve driven by. My cousins did live near Sherman Way and Kester. They moved by the 210 and Hubbard. Their son and daughter bailed to Boise, Idaho, and they followed.

In th early 90's the popeyes in Reseda was a Pioneer chicken and next to it was a mom and pop video rental business( can't recall the name). The DD's was previously a big lots and before that it was a Petsmart. I believe prior to being a Petsmart it was some sort of Home depot/ builder's emporium style business. Also I worked at the Hollywood video during high school and recall a shooting inside where an off duty officer shot a guy trying to rob the place, wild times. Awesome video man!

It was DEFINATELY Builders Emporium. I worked at that store until Builders went out of business and that store shut down in '94. They didn't change it much from Big Lots to DDs but they rebuilt the store from Builders, there was an outside nursery area on the Darby street side. So technically he and his wife are BOTH correct, which means his wife is correct, which is the only thing that really matters. 😁

I'm digging your videos, Kurt. I also used to eat at that QT's Hotdogs regularly, and I'm sure that you served me there. I think you're right about the Winchell's. Also, if you watch the original Fun With Dick and Jane (1977), you will quickly see that C&C Liquor, with the original neon lights. In the film they attempt to rob several stores that were located in Encino close to C&C.

Also liquor stores down there are so different from places in other states. I used to go into the liquor store by our house when I was a kid, by myself. You can't do that in Portland, Oregon. Must be over 21. You might be able to enter one of these stores if accompanied by someone 21 or older, but minors can't enter alone. I liked the liquore store better than 7-11 because they had better magazine and candy prices. Heh. Your Story about Foster's reminded me of when my family, including my extended family went to see ET at the Peppertree. There was an Italian restaurant nearby. Everyone wanted to go there after the movie, but watching ET turn white and get sick really upset me to the point that I got sick on the doorstep of this restaurant. I wish I could remember the name, so I could apologize for what I did to them in 1982.
