How can John Lennon, at 25 years old, have anywhere near enough life experience and wisdom to write these words??? My God the talent.

Actually a lot. His dad left him when he was a young child, his Uncle that helped raised him dies of a heart attack, just a few years prior to this song being written his Mom is killed by a drunk off duty police officer when he ran her over with his car. In the early Beatles days, their original bass player Stuart dies suddenly. Paul's mother had died about 10 years prior, so yes John at a young age had already seen a lot come and go in his short lifetime.

@@BrightStone-production for the first five years of his life, John's dad was on a merchant ship hauling the arsenal of democracy across an ocean to defeat the third reich and came home to find John's mom pregnant with another man's baby, so he slapped her around and left for good while John was watching it all go down when he was 5 or 6. He showed up again when his son hit the big time but they had an on again-off again relationship depending on John's moods and sobriety or lack thereof. He actually recorded a demo in the US in 1966 that his son used as the chord structure for Imagine. George Smith, John's uncle, died of a liver hemorrhage when John was away in Scotland visiting his maternal grandparents and some cousins when he was 15. He's buried in the churchyard where John and Paul met each other. Mary McCartney died about two years before Julia Lennon of metastatic breast cancer. The police officer who struck and killed Julia within two years of George Smith's passing was not driving drunk and the accident was not his fault. Sutcliffe left the lineup of the Beatles on New Year's Day 1962 and died on the 10th of April of a brain bleed, which some have speculated started a few days earlier from a head injury inflicted during a street fight.

My parents were not huggers or kissers, even with us kids, though we knew we were loved. I will never forget when they came to visit me in college and I "took" them to lunch (Dad paid) were there was an acoustic guitarist singing on the patio. He played this song and all of the sudden my parents were holding hands and my Mom was blushing like a teenager. I was floored but loved seeing them with stars in their eyes.

What a sweet story and an even sweeter memory for you! My parents did not display their emotions or feelings much either. My dad did for a short period of time after he almost did not survive a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm and after he came home, he would get teary eyed and sentimental but as time went on, he became his old grumpy self again. This was one of my and my wife's wedding songs. It's perfect for us, not only because she is a big Beatles fan, but also because we were both middle-aged and previously married when we met. We both have had our share of previous relationships. This is a beautiful song about how there will always be people who meant something to you, who will always mean something to you, but will never mean as much to you as your one true love. It's amazing to think that John Lennon wrote this when he was only about 25. It is such a mature perspective.

I was five years old in February 1964. My teenaged sister made me watch the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show. I heard all of their incredible music through her, a true Beatlemaniac. On her last day, I played Beatles music for her for hours in the hospice as friends and family came to say goodbye. In the evening, when it was just the two of us, I played Rubber Soul and held her hand. The last Beatles song she heard was In My Life. She passed seconds after it ended.

For Ringo songs: Octopus's Garden is such a beautiful song with a message and a vibe I think you two would love (then again, that's true for most every song of theirs). George also helped him write it, so, I think it made that song a little more special with their unique styles combining. More popular songs of his, and just as great, are With A Little Help From My Friends and Yellow Submarine, but I think Octopus's Garden is an underrated gem. Remember, though, Ringo was the drummer and not the most often lead singer for reasons, haha, but his charm, character, and talent gives his vocals a special aspect that can't be quantified. ❤❤❤❤

For decades, folks said of Ringo that he wasn't a great drummer. They were all wrong, too, because they judged him on "technical merit", not quality of performance. There are plenty of videos by drummers taking down that misconception, and they tell it better than I can, with the exception that Ringo's left-handed, but played on a right-handed kit setup, which also throws off the technicality folks, because that can't sound the same, apples-potatoes.

That is not the contemporary story, that is Paul's version that he came up with decades later. In a video from that time period in '65 there is an interview with both John and Paul are talking to a reporter about that song. Lennon is talking about how he created this song and mentioned that Paul helped a bit. Paul nodded along. Paul only created the version of him writing all the music as well as most of the lyrics recently. Paul even said John only had the first line which doesn't appear to make any sense since the entire set of lyrics in Lennon's handwriting exists. Paul's story is just his revisionist history as the way he remembers it as the way he puts it. I wouldn't trust an 80 year old's memory from events 50 years earlier in the best of cases nevermind with Paul's history. Then the song sounds like a classic Lennon melody exactly as he was writing other songs of that period. He was creating Girl, Norwegian Wood, It's Only Love and many others in a similar vein. This sounds nothing like a typical Paul melody. And since when has Lennon ever written a set of lyrics with no idea of a melody to sing it? This is a guy that was at the height of his powers during Rubber Soul cranking out some of his best work. Paul's contributions on Rubber Soul were among his less popular. I like them, but they weren't big hits. This song has Lennon written all over it. I'm sure Paul helped a bit on it as they each helped other with their songs.

@potato-whiz 8 ай бұрын
@@stickman1742This is untrue. Paul first made the claim that he set the words to melody back in 1970, when John was very much alive and able to rebuttal, which he did. Paul has maintained the same story of writing the melody and what the inspiration was for it all through the 70s and for over 50 years. Do with that what you will. He’s never claimed he wrote the lyrics, he acknowledges the lyrics were all John.

For any musicians, this song has the classic Lennon chord sequence going from major to minor on the IV chord leading back to the I. He used this device in quite a few of his songs and it’s particularly moving in this one - his falsetto “in my life” over the minor IV at the end is beautiful. RIP John.

Sir George said the reason he did that, was that he wrote this two-part invention like a Bach piece, but couldn't play it as fast as the song required. So he recorded it at half speed, then doubled the tape speed during mixing. He did this all when the Beatles had gone out to eat, and when they got back he played it for John, and John loved it.

So many Beatles songs have a unique quality. This one has a bridge with a Baroque genre….as if written by Bach! Beatles producer, George Martin played it slowly and then sped up the recording to fit…and it sounds like a harpsichord. It’s a surprising sound. But the whole song feels nostalgic for people you have loved. And that bridge gives that nostalgia a vintage quality.

The most famous Ringo Starr / Beatles song is probably "Yellow Submarine." And it's great! But "Don't Pass Me By" is also really good, and of course "With a Little Help From My Friends" is totally wonderful. Enjoy! 🎶

And add to that "Octopus's Garden." The song's is a wacky as its title. Especially noteworthy that Ringo wrote it.

@@Mr5thWave I agree on all suggestions. I would also add ”Boys”, an early cover from ’Please Please Me’ and ”Good Night” from ’The Beatles’.

False, fact check. Octopuses Garden is not only the best Ringo song but one of the best Beatles songs.

The beauty of this song is its universality. Everyone has e x experienced loss or have lost touch with those we were once close to. John's seklf reflection at such a young age is remarable. A great song.

The genius of The Beatles is how they progress with each new Album. The early stuff is pop love songs. Then their mid 60’s stuff is like this where you see them begin to evolve. Then Sgt Pepper, White Album, Abbey Road are ambitious albums that contrast so much from early songs like ‘Love Me Do.’

great song by the great John Lennon, remembering his life, one time Beatle Stu Sutcliff was a big influence in this song. Ringo sang lead vocal on, With A Little Help From My Friends, Good Night, Octopuses Garden which he wrote, Boys, Act Naturally, and others.

.POS Lennon was an admitted wife beater. he was a coward punk. Deadbeat dad, the coward got what he deserved.

My parents had all their albums and they were a major reason I grew up loving music. Fantastic songs I see havent been reacted to are If I Fell and Hide Your Love Away. You’ll love them.

Love this song, tears every time. Rob Squad great job - to your young lady partner at 2:20 you can see the mood go from keeping time to in the groove melo and then the tears at 5:00 -- 5:28 that we all share cause I'm right there with you. Beautiful song. I hope your mom is doing good after selling the farm, sounds like good memories.

To me this is one of the best songs ever written. It really shows Lennon's growth as a song writer. How about some early Beatles with Ringo? "Act Naturally' or 'With a Little Help From My Friends' spring to mind. Cheers.
