I have a client who is a mom of a high school graduate. She had collected all of his t-shirts, sweatshirts, backpacks, blanket and a bib that Grandma had embroidered his name on throughout his childhood. He was now headed to college and she wanted me to make some type of a memory keepsake for him. He decided he did not want a T-shirt quilt, so Mom opted to make a pillow cover for him. There were 23 items that I had to fit to a 20"x30" queen size pillow cover. We decided to do 12 items in an even grid on one side, and the other 11 odd-sized items in a custom pattern grid for the other side of the pillow cover. I cut and stitched them together according to size. And I always add a zipper at the bottom of my pillow covers, so that it can be removed easily. When she gave it to her son, she said that he broke down and took it into his room and shut the door. She said he also ended up having a video conversation with his grandmother about all of the items she had embroidered for him when he was small, and they were both thrilled that it had been made into this special keepsake item for him. These are projects that fill my heart with joy, because they are one of a kind and they make my clients so happy!
