Mendelssohn's greatest piano composition (IMHO)... It is a stunning piece, one of my all time favourite piano pieces. (And as a great piano lover, I know quite some...) The playing of Perahia is phenomenal, he brings it all out, an impeccable, crisp and clear amazingly beautiful interpretation.

This moving work might well have lent itself to orchestration. It is one of those works where the simple is most profound. Simply beautiful and well performed as well.

Great! But still greater ist the Brooklyn performance 1980 by Sviatoslav Richter (also available on youtube). "Greater" means still more connection and unit, still more and more dynamic accelerando, nevertheless with the sentimental basis in he beginning and the end.

Peacefully calm before the storm... In variation 15, ominous clouds come in slowly, and then ... It BURSTS in variation 16. In fact, that is no storm, its a Tsunami !

Why does everybody change Tempo in the last 6 bars?

Because the last arpeggios are like a sort of exasperated cadence of the whole last variation ... the detachment brings back the time and the stillness of the theme. Try to measure the time of the last 6 bars and the time of the theme; you will see that they match. ;-)
