I restore old furniture. After a particularly long, filthy, challenging day today I thought, "I need to watch Julian Baumgartner clean a painting." Fixing old broken things is important work. It returns beauty to the world that we though was lost - no matter how mildew-and-cobwebby my hair is right now. Thanks for the reminder and inspiration.

Looked like someone smeared mud on the painting in those first shots of it. And then as you cleaned it, I yelled out “There’s PEOPLE in it?!” Lol And as you tacked down the back of the painting, folded the edges, neatly tacked the corners and snipped the errant thread, my heart said “This is why I love him. Such precision!” Thank you for all your hard work!

My parents also have a picture of their hometown in the Netherlands in their living room, and it's been there for over 50 years. If something were to ever happen to it, I would be devastated and would also do whatever I could to restore it. It's tied to countless memories for their children and grandchildren, so I understand completely how this family felt. I'm so glad they were able to have it restored - what a wonderful gift!

What I think is amazing is it's very likely the current owners have never seen it in it's original color like this. Because of the old varnish covering the old grime, it's making it look even better than their memories.

I like these paintings because they are a window to what urban environments used to look like before modern times. I think this one might be one of my favorites. I would have loved to have lived in a place like that. One of the things I've fancied for some time now was a sort of google maps street view but instead of our current streets, we'd get a reimagined version of how places used to looked like centuries ago. I know it's impossible without a ton historical knowledge and artistic liberties, but I wish it was a thing.

Your idea of a painting being an avatar for emotions and experiences really hit me. The true value of a painting is usually not in the object itself usually, but in the wealth of memories and emotions that spring up when someone is touched by what the art represents. I have two very amateurish paintings done by my mother, who died nearly fifty years ago, and I would not trade them for anything! I still feel her sweetness and love whenever I look at them, and they would be unlikely to mean much to anyone else. You are a caretaker of memories and experiences, Julian! Thank you!

It’s a bit of a late comment but I wanted to say anyway, around Christmas time my mum asked if I could restore a photo of my grandmothers father. They had spent months, verging on years, digging through ancestry trying to discover who my gran’s dad was as she’d never known and her own mother had taken it to the grave. They finally found him (obviously long gone) and found a photo. But the photo had creases throughout, especially across the face. It was, as you’d say, distracting as you couldn’t appreciate the man in the photo. I took it to my iPad and through a digital programme, set to fixing the creases, using your technique of doing lots of little dots to blend the missing parts in, taking care to only fix the areas that needed it. It turned out beautifully. I printed it out, popped it in a nice frame and gifted it to my grandma on Christmas Day. She was over the moon. So thank you for sharing what you do. It’s helped allow me to learn conservation techniques, even if they’re digital, to restore something that means the world to my grandma, and the world to me.
