Honestly the entire midnights album is the perfect “shadow self” album and various people can relate to various songs it’s all that icky self-reflection stuff you don’t want to think about but in the middle of the night it hits you as you stare at the ceiling in your room.

I feel like when she says “I’ll stare directly at the sun but never in the mirror” she’s saying she will continue to do things that hurt her and choose to stay blinded, rather than have to face herself and work through the things that hurt her.

After initially hearing this song I definitely felt that Taylor has been a victim of narcissist abuse. I still feel that way. The video felt very much like a battle in her mind of her vs her (based on what others project onto her). The bathroom scene in the music video, feeling that she isn't good enough, sticks out to me.

Plus the original video that said "FAT" on the scale? People thought she was fat shaming and she wasn't. That was about her and her eating disorder. But once again, people took it out on her instead of trying to even hear her out. JFC I just had a revelation about how much abuse she really gets from the media and non-Swiftie community. She just wrote a song about her deepest insecurities and was told that "she didn't do it right, fix it to make us comfortable". Oh, Taylor, I want to give you a huge hug.

Demi Lovato has hated Taylor for years because of her friendship with Selena Gomez. Demi and Selena are no longer friends for whatever reason and I think Demi blames Taylor. She has made digs at Taylor for years and I find it sad. Demi comes across as very insecure to me and it seems like she is extremely jealous of Taylor.

@@ellieandthetorts I’m not biased about scooter. I know Taylor says he bullied her but I haven’t seen anything that leads me to believe that’s true. Not to say she’s lying but idk. She may have misunderstood a situation and saw it as bullying when it wasn’t. That being said Demi.. ugh.. she has a fantastic voice but is always having some new revelation about herself like it’s life changing, whrn in reality we are all changing all the time, we are never not the same. We will be different then our 19, 21,25,29, 32 yr old selves. It’s a fact of life. She seems very insecure like she shares these things as if out of a need of affirmation🤷🏻‍♀️ idk I’m trying to be nice. She stresses me out.

You're right it's difficult as really it's all media speculation & it's difficult to know exactly what's truly going on. It's unfortunate that it all seems to revolve around such a small group of people. Think you are spot on. Demi does truly have a great voice too. I wasn't intending it to come accross as mean, but reading that reply back it was harsher than intended. The spiteful was the wrong word to use. X

I feel like when she says “I wake up screaming from dreaming. One day I’ll watch as you’re leaving and life will lose all of its meaning.” She is talking about her fans right there. I don’t know that’s just what comes to my mind, when I hear that part of the song.

Maybe I interpret the Narcissist line differently because she starts with "did you hear..." I have taken it as "have you heard that people think I am a narcissist because any altruistic thing I do they interpret as me wanting attention as congressmen do"... I haven't taken it as her admitting that she views herself as a narcissist (covert or otherwise) especially if you take into account that it has NEVER been Taylor herself or her team publicizing her helping people. (the Kesha thing, I could be mistaken but I believe it was Kesha herself who wrote on Twitter that Taylor helped her) ... I could be wrong obviously, but that is the feeling I get.

I don’t know if it’s just a British saying but the phrase ‘over the hill’ is used to describe older women who are no longer perceived as attractive. The age for that is usually 40. So Taylor saying she’s ‘on the hill’ could be her saying she’s 32 now so soon she’ll be at the age when the music/media industry deem her too old.

Seemed to me like she was she was talking about how she reached a level of fame that made it borderline impossible for her to form genuine friendship. Everyone she interacts with either fears her or wants something from her.

You're great at this! Love it! I have a theory about the plate with the eggs and bacon. It's like a face, and it's asymmetrical. One egg is smaller than the other and it generally looks happy but not perfect. Since appearance and beauty are parts of the song, I thought it's a metaphor that she feels like she's not pretty or symmetrical like the breakfast face.

I think this whole song speaks about narcissistic abuse . That people around her point out she’s the “problem.” Seems a lot of people have messed with her mind , but she’s not the problem. Love the title because she is really the hero despite what people have told her.

Still when you said you tend to attract a lot of narcissist-feeling like you're an extension of them that really resonated...really did oh my gosh.

Thanks for putting this work/analysis out there. I was picking up that Taylor had been a victim of narcissistic abuse and i was finding it annoying that there is talk about her being a narcissist , which is a joke ! A lot of it stems from ignorance ,a lack of depth and jealousy. Her music is helping a lot of people, including me.

I interpret this song totally different. I thought the song is sarcastic. Like she's not saying she is all these things and taking accountability for it, she's saying people THINK that she is this and that and that's not true. Like she constantly looks in the mirror, but people think she's not. "Did you hear my narcissism disguise as altruism" - for me it's saying "did you hear people talk about me, they say that I act like I'm an altruist, but I'm actually a narcissist, which is not true. People think she is a monster, she never feels like she's cool and sexy, they constantly take her apart and criticize her, her looks etc. to the point where when she comes for example to do a concert, and she feels like she's not welcomed in the city. Saying it's me hi, I'm the problem it's me for me feels like saying "yh yh you all think I'm the problem, it's me, everybody is agreeing on this, you all spill tea about me and criticize me, yeah yeah sure I never look in the mirror 🙄" she's being sarcastic, she is haunted by people's opinions about her, people hating on her, when in reality she is reflecting on herself, she is reading all these things about her, it makes her depressed, makes her avoid people (ghost them), makes her have eating disorder.

You should watch the actual music video for this song because there's a big part of the funeral scene that is hilarious to watch and the video itself is just great I think you would really enjoy it. And even though you're not my personal therapist you have helped me a lot recently going through a lot of things just watching some of your videos and realizing that I'm not doing this by myself so thank you.

I think two of Taylor's core values and decency and authenticity, and this song in some way reflects the struggle she feels to maintain those things after she became so successful and influential. Can I still interact with 'normal' people? Do I isolate myself too much? Does having so much money change a person on some fundamental level? Great psychological analysis of a great song!

I've been waiting for this reaction, for your thoughts on the "dream my daughter in law kills me for the money" cause I just knew you'd get it. It sounds silly to a lot of people, but it's the part i resonated with the strongest and there's just something comforting about being understood. Betrayal trauma is so pervasive. And yes! I saw so many male reactions to this song where they would say "Finally! she's taking responsibility" and I wanted to scream at them, "taking responsibility for what?!" As far as I know Taylor has only ever taken her experiences, written them down, and made them into songs. No one has ever forced anyone to sensationalize her personal life and no one has ever forced you to pay attention to it. Demi is a hard artist for me. I love her voice, she's an amazing singer and I feel for her due to her mental health and her struggles with drugs and her eating disorder, but I also can only give a person so many chances. Since she's not personally in my life and doesn't affect it whatsoever, I think it's fine if someone still wants to listen or support her, she's not evil. But for me, I can't get over her behavior so I no longer listen to her.

the same thing happened when Blank Space came out! I Remember some kind of reaction compilation video where some guy was like "oh I'm so glad she knows she's a psycho ex lol" and then when someone told him it was Taylor making a parody of who people think she is, he didn't believe them. Like he really thought he knew more about Taylor than Taylor herself!

elated that you mentioned Demi's accusation of Taylor for supporting Kesha financially. it is despicable for demi Lovato to say such thing to a kind hearted person like Taylor. also the song is so introspective and makes me feel like Taylor does feel very helpless when it comes to how ppl perceive her and her behaviours. cuz no matter what she does, ppl seem to misinterpret or purposely twist her intentions. thats y she keeps saying its me hi im the problem its me. Here, I am procrastinating from doing my Creative Writing Psych assignment. Ha! Ha! I was looking for inspiration from Lana del Rey, I found your channel, and after three videos, I am still enjoying your reactions and explanations. I am really happy that more professionals outside the music industry are dissecting Taylor's music lyrics and other artists. Music itself has been a form of spoken poetry, sonnets, and/or epic poems for over one thousand years. Having young people like MJ, Dermot Kennedy, Taylor Swift, just to name a few, are def very rare in song writing/poetry nowadays. Sadly, MJ left us, but his MV Earth Song, Black and White, among other excellent story writing, song writing masterpieces are still around. Someday [let's hope not yet] when Taylor Swift does leave us, she will leave a great legacy in her music and charitable works. As The Band Perry sings in their song "A penny for my thoughts - oh no. I'll sell them for a dollar. They are worth so much more after I'm a goner. And maybe then you'll hear the words I've been singing. Funny when you are dead how people start listening...." I really honestly think by being in psychology myself I hear the pain of somebody who has Borderline personality disorder….. I mean it’s very evident that clash between herself and herself. Fear of trauma abandonment, the prices of vices when numbing, rocky relationships, identity issues, issues with perception of reality and people….. it’s a cycle and pattern reflecting of a repeating spiral of emotions causing issues. It’s raw and those lyrics are deep very vulnerable what a beautiful courageous song but yes she’s very much singing about BPD. What honesty it’s beautiful. I think this song sounds very emotional in the singing and you can hear it she is singing from a place where these issues for her control a lot of her life.

I definitely think Demi has made some questionable comments. That aside, she's a beautiful person, at times visibly insecure, who has suffered a lot and it really comes across in her music. I think you would really like some personal songs of hers like "Anyone", "Father" and "Sober".

I have an entirely different take on Anti-Hero. In short, Anti-Hero is Midnights' Blank Space. where Taylor destroys her haters with their own words. Narcissists are lacking in insight and are incapable of altruism. Therefore, they cannot disguise their narcissistic tendencies in altruistic acts. In the song she says she never looks into a mirror, yet Narcissus fell in love with his own reflection. Finally, who was it that looked directly at the sun? And who is it that refuses to hold himself responsible for anything? And who is idolized by his far-right followers in spite of his many character flaws? It's taken awhile but his followers are finally tiring of rooting for their Anti-Hero. In my opinion, this is Taylor's cleverest song. Anti-Hero is You Need To Calm Down times ten. In Anti-Hero Trump takes a gut shot.

Yeah as someone with celiac disease, Demi's rant against the froyo shop for having sugar free and gluten free treats was pretty much the last straw for me tbh. I'll suggest Can't Go Back and Pretty Little Things by the Crane Wives from their fantastic album Foxlore (coincidentally, it also has a sister album, Coyote Stories! From that one I recommend Unraveling and Never Love an Anchor or honestly any of their albums, The Fool in Her Wedding Gown is a devastating masterpiece) even though I could literally listen to you talk about Taylor Swift songs for the rest of my life and be perfectly content.

Taylor has been under a microscope for years and has had to deal with narcissistic people all the while. It’s a shame to think that she directs this at herself then thinking she’s the problem when it’s really not. Doesn’t surprise me if those are the people she is ghosting and for good reason. No need for that or them. Taylor is very talented and no one can deny it.

I also like the anti-hero- I really think there are no straight up "hero's", altruism always has underlying motives, even if they are only to make ourselves feel good. To have stations only play "Taylor's Version" is exactly why she rerecorded them, lol To make the money- she isn't in this game to do this for free. I love your reactions. Taylor is nothing if not the Shakespeare of our generation. I think that the line, "Did you hear..." can also be have you heard? I can't deal with Demi- someone who overdoses repeatedly, makes a ton of money of off recovery videos while doing drugs at the same time, I also think she is highly manipulative, and the issue with the FroYo shop turned me completely off of her music. Taylor may have her issues, but she is nothing if not for her fans. As far as her trusting people, how do you trust people when you are worth almost a billion dollars, and all of these things have happened? How do you know why people want to be around you? Do you think Tay goes to therapy? How would she trust a therapist? Probably her mother. Great reaction!

Demi Lovato seems like she's always in crisis with her mental health, and no one around her helps. They let her do interviews high, or in the middle of a breakdown. It makes me sad because when she seems sober, she seems really cool. But she seems so all over the place it makes it hard to be a Stan.

I used to be a major Demi Lovato fan but as I got older I really fell out of love. She's often very unlikable (obviously only judging from what she's publicly shown). Her fit about the yogurt is what really sealed the deal. It's a shame because she's so talented and I still listen to her music.

Therapists are supposed to be biased. You're an obvious Swifty ( no hate because I love Taylor too, and this song) Just maybe you aren't the right one to professionally assess this.

This song is a narcissist screaming at the ones around her to just see who she is-She hasn’t a problem with who she is, but perhaps others would if they saw her. But they won’t.

Sorry typed this before watching the whole video . Where are other artists you’ve only done one John Meyer song I’m still waiting for 29 by Demi lovato I’m not mad just wondering why you tell us you’ll do other artists but then just keep doing Taylor songs. I’m not sure what othe songs I can recommend other then Demi’s because I know she talks about a lot of therapeutic things in her songs but I understand why you wouldn’t want to react to her music after some of the things she’s said over the years. I guess what I’m getting at is what genres do you like because I can recommend many other artists I just don’t want to recommend something you won’t like. Here’s one song I think you’d like it’s pearl by Katy Perry
