These Meniscus Tear stretches and exercises should help if you've had a meniscal tear. When you tear your meniscus, your knee becomes unstable. Often people also experience popping and clicking in the knee. See Doctor Jo’s blog post about this at: www.askdoctorjo...
The meniscus works like a suction cup in the knee, and when it is torn, it becomes painful and sometimes feels like your knee is going to give out on you.
First we will start off with some stretches. The first stretch will be a calf stretch. With your leg out in front of you, take a strap, belt, dog leash, or big towel and wrap it around the ball of your foot. Try to keep your leg as straight as you can, and relax your foot. Pull the strap towards you until you feel a stretch in the back of your lower leg. Hold this stretch for 30 seconds, and do it three times. Then you will keep the strap on your foot, and lie down to do a hamstring stretch. You want your knee to be straight with this stretch, so only go as high as you can before the knee bends. Pull it up in the air towards your head, and if you pull your toes towards you as well, you will get more of a stretch. Hold this stretch for 30 seconds, and do it three times. I have several other stretches for the calf and hamstrings in other videos if you would like to see other versions.
Now for the exercises, you will start with a quad set. Put the leg you want to exercise out in front of you. You want to squeeze or activate the quad muscle by pushing your knee down into the ground. If you want to roll up a small towel to place underneath your knee for a target, you can. Also, pulling your toes up towards you will help straighten out the knee and contract the muscles. Hold this for 3-5 seconds and relax. Start with ten of these and work your way up to 20-25.
The next one you can lie down or stay in a long sit with your leg out in front of you. This will be a heel slide, and all you are going to do is slide your heel up toward your bottom as far as you comfortably can, and then slowly come back down. Start with ten of these and work your way up to 20-25.
Then you will roll over onto your stomach in the prone position. Try to keep your leg as straight as you can, but it might bend slightly. You will do a leg extension movement. Lift your leg slowly off the ground, but you don’t have to go high. Keep your hips on the ground while lifting your leg, and slowly come back down. Start off with 10, and work your way up to 20-25. If that becomes easy, then you can add light ankle weights.
Now roll onto your side for the clamshell exercise. This one is harder than it looks. You want to keep your hips straight up and down, perpendicular to the floor. Your hips will want to roll back, but keep them up as much as you can. Then keeping your knees together with one on top of the other, bend your knees slightly towards your body. Then lift the top leg up slightly, like a clamshell opening up. It doesn’t have to be a big movement because you want to keep your hips from moving. Start off with 10 of these, and then work your way up to 20-25.

Thank you so much for your time....my pain started suddenly with a lot of locking & popping of the knee one day. And as I continued my usual routine of execrcise and dance rehearsals it got worse to pain and swelling. Since then I have changed my routing to mostly release & strengthening of the knees and avoided jumps and deep flexing of the knees and direct pressure on it. I practice RICE too. I feel better but pain persists on the inner side of the tibial bone in the front of the knee below the pattella on a point. I am on a performance tour in Australia and having to perform as choreography requires with jumps and deep plie etc though some stuff I have managed to shift to the other side or chenged completely. I appeciate your valuable time....warm regards

Why does my knee seem to beg to be popped now? Im about 2 months post injury and it’s still healing. As I sit, it gets a little stiffer and the inside burns a bit, then there’s a huge compulsion to twist just a little to get it to pop. Instantly it’s more pain but then total relief too. But that relief doesn’t last long. Then it’s also sometimes over and over and over throughout the day that it “wants” to be popped. The pop started with my knee just about a week ago. Is it gas or fluid getting in somewhere that just doesn’t feel right so it “wants” to be popped? Am I hindering healing by popping it? I’m so glad you are on KZfaq! I’ve sent a small donation, subscribed, and I’m on my way to look at what else you have.
@AskDoctorJo
@AskDoctorJo 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Sometimes with a meniscal tear, you can have what is called a bucket handle tear. Often it will catch and have that feeling that it needs to pop to move again. If the pop is painful, it's not the best to do, but movement is important as well (so it's a tough balance). Sometimes just turning your knee slightly inward or outward will help avoid the pop.

Stretching and light exercises help with the healing process without increasing the irritation. Often the meniscus will not repair on it's own, but once the initial irritation goes away with proper treatment, you can then progress your strengthening program.

Diagnosed with a torn meniscus or what was left of my meniscus from getting scoped 25 plus years ago. I have some fluid on my knee and can't fully straighten to full extension or bend it real well. Injured it about 3 months back. MRI shows torn ACL also but prior to this injury my knee was bullet proof, weight training, cross training, swords and kicks NO problem. Since this happened and I can't lock my knee out my right thigh is withering and freaking me out. The Dr says to do some stretches to get my knee to lock out again and bend. Not sure what to believe or do at this point,

Thanks Dr.Jo , nice video 😊👍I am suffering from a small tear in the Posterior horn of the medial meniscus for the past 2 months. Doc advised me to use a walker for 3months, but I am not doing that as I am not feeling comfortable with that, but I have reduced walking and avoiding any load on my knee... All this while didn’t try anything due to the fear of worsening the tear. However I want to get back to my Dance Aerobics soon 😬 I will try these exercises to get recovered fast😉

I have a very dear friend who suffers from occasional knee popping or clicking sound (thankfully no pain) since 2014, but the knee popping recently returned after 4 years of relief. The doctors told him it was a minor tear. I hope these exercises can help my friend be free without the annoying or frustrating knee clicking once again. Along with the exercises, would warm baths and ice help my friend be free of the knee clicking. Thanks for the helpful video as always. God Bless.

Hi I am from TURKEY. I am 23 years old. 2nd meniscus degree tear in 2.5 years. I went to 4 different hospitals. I had physical therapy in 2 different hospitals. but my meniscus still hurts.Doctors said that you are young and it will heal with exercise, but it does not. I haven't run for 2.5 years. I don't strain my knees. I exercise but it is not improving. I am now looking at the physical therapy exercise plans of different countries. Do you think I should remove part of the meniscus with surgery? THANK YOU.

I'm unable to straighten my knee completely, I'm just about there, but I'm a little afraid of trying to straighten fully in case I injure my knee further. I've been to a doctor, but with covid-19 I'm not able to get any imaging done to tell if it's really a tear.

I play football and had an horrible injury back in 2014 and the ACL & PCL were completely teared and the MCL was only ruptured, I made an surgery and 1 year physical therapy but after all my knee wasn't stable, I've been to another doctor, he said the ligaments are bit longer than how supposed to be and this makes your knee unstable and unavailable for football and you must do an another operation in order to get your knee again, my doctor said it's normal but it only that these kind of complete tears, your knee will never be the same again, I kinda got disappointed and depressed, what I wanna is if my doctor is right and that's it for me or it could be fixed and well again with an another surgery! Thank you.
