High King Fingolfin was the brother of Fëanor and heir to the kingdom of the Noldor in Middle-earth. He was most valiant of his folk and his light pierced the vale of Morgoth’s shadow in Tolkien’s works. Thank you all so much for watching, let me know your thoughts about Fingolfin in the comments below! As always, a great thanks to the online artists whose visual works made this video possible! If you are one of the artists, please let me know and I will post your name and a link to your work in this description!

@@madambutterfly1997 Fëanor was Fingolfin's liege lord. He'd sworn fealty to him. Although after his father's murder by Morgoth, Fingolfin obviously found Fëanor's actions to be rash and unjust, in the interests of his people - who, bound by their oath to return to Middle Earth in Fëanor's wake, but also by their own pride, which evoked in them an aversion to a shameful return to Valinor, they opted to follow Fëanor back to Middle Earth even after he'd obviously abandoned them. And they chose all this at great cost and ongoing grief - both at the time of Helcaraxe and throughout the Long Defeat during the Ages afterward.

To me, Fingolfin has always been one of Tolkien's greatest characters...and one of his greatest lessons too. The greatest of all the High Kings of the Noldor, he was not too proud to decline reconciliation with Feanor, even when nobody would have blamed him had he chosen otherwise. He held to his oath and followed Feanor, even after being betrayed and left behind by him. Such an honorable elf!! And, of course, his epic battle with Morgoth himself was a testament to his courage and his will. Knowing he could not win, he fought on anyway and never gave in. A great lesson for us all.

Fingolfin is such a hero of the Elves and one of the bravest especially upon deciding to confront Morgoth. I think a stand off though between Feanor and Fingolfin would have definitely been incredibly interesting to see, my money would have been on Fingolfin lol. I agree, the final epic fight was just the icing on the cake for his reputation. Despite sharing some of the same blood as Feanor, he was far more gracious and did not fight him despite severe provocation, even forgiving his half-brother after their confrontation in Valinor. He was also not only a great High King in Middle Earth who achieved a near 400 year chokehold on Morgoth's power and therefore peace, he was also the proxy High King of the Noldor in Valinor when Finwe joined Feanor in exile at Formenost. Finally, it needs to be said, he led the Noldor through the truly terrifying journey of the Helcaraxe when Feanor abandoned them. "Epic" does not do him justice.

Great video, Yoystan! Fingolfin is one of my most favorite elves. Of Finwë's sons, I like him the most. Finarfin is too much peacefull (meaning no offense) and Fëanor is evil (I understand his temperament, but don't aprove his evil actions). Fingolfin is wise and kind but also valiant. He can do what is neccessary for a good of his people. And he and Maedhros were clever and wise enough to restore peace between their people (which is something that Fëanor would never do). That duel with Melkor was really brave move. He thought that everything is lost, but despite that he rode to Angband and at least try to beat Melkor (even if his chances are very very very small) and save survivors of Dagor Bragollach. Truly great character. He will be always my king.

Fingolfin is special IMO in that he definitely is not the author's pet, sure he is as awesome and a noble paragon as possible, but he then faced factors beyond his control and he had to made tough choices, weighing his priorities. He did not want to fight his elder half-brother, so he swore to submit to his half-brother's leadership? Surprise surprise, his half-brother decided to rebel against the gods and lead his people to a doomed quest, so Fingolfin must weigh his oath, his love for his family, his love for his people, his love for Valinor, his obedience to the gods Valar, and make a difficult choice. When his half-brother told him that another band of elves attacked them, Fingolfin had no choice but to follow and retaliate, only to later find that his half-brother misled him and actually the other band of elves were wronged, tainting Fingolfin's honour. Fingolfin wanted to form alliances among the good people in Middle Earth, and a prime candidate to win over is the local elven king, who had an angel for a wife and who also is technically your father's peers, so you need to call him King Thingol Sir. And then to make this pitch even harder to made, King Thingol discovered that you had (accidentally) slaughtered his kinsmen before coming to Middle Earth, so he is not very chummy with you. What do you do? Grit and bear it, try to make the best with the cards you were dealt. Fingolfin wanted to put Angband under siege and be vigilant against Morgoth? Well tough luck high king, your people felt content and lost the alertness, so they lost hard in the battle of sudden flames.

@sweeperboy
@sweeperboy 2 жыл бұрын
I do think Fingolfin would have been reincarnated by the time of the War of the Ring and living in bliss in Valinor. We don't know this for sure of course, as Tolkien wrote nothing about it, but we do know that Finrod Felagund was reincarnated and was back with his original love in Valinor. The Doom of Mandos was lifted on the living Noldor of Middle Earth after the War of Wrath allowing them to return to Valinor if they wished, so unless someone had done some truly awful deeds (looking at you here, Feanor and sons), it would not make sense for Mandos to keep Fingolfin, Fingod, Turgon and so on in the Halls indefinitely. The only thing apart from the original "rebellion" that Fingolfin would have to atone for (and even that is debateable, since his intent was to not abandon his people to Feanor, rather than for the reasons the Feanoreans left; additionally, the Noldor came to Valinor under free will, so they were not prisoners there), is the first Kinslaying which again he and his people were not really to blame for as they arrived at a pitched battle between the Feanoreans and the Teleri without the context of how it started. So undoubtedly, he would have spent some time in the Halls of Mandos before being reincarnated, but I am quite sure that Mandos would have seen the true valour, purity and honour of this great Elf and given him a second chance of life.

Finrod’s character is definitely more fleshed out. His travels with Turgon, his discovery of men. The way he sacrificed himself for Beren; killing the wolf with his bare hands and teeth. Amazing character. Fingolfin has more of that mystery and intrigue. Plus he had the most epic scene in all the Silmarillion. But yes, Finrod is a more complete character.

I think that Fingolfin is by far the most loyal elf in the whole Tolkien-Universe. I mean, he was betrayed by his brother, but still had his back. Which other elf did that? But am I the only one who is absolutely interested in the idea of what would be if Feanor and/or Fingolfin would live throughout the second and third age? I mean, would their existence change anything? Would the rings still be created by Celebrimbor? Would they maybe bring war or would they establish peace?

Don't know why, but I have ever had the impression that Fingolfin was more akin to a noble king/knight of medieval "Courtly Love" novels rather than the epics Tolkien mostly wrote in the Silmarillion. It's as if he is a bit out of place surrounded by so many extremely passioned and angry Heroes, while he mostly acted on the background as a calm and steady force. Even when fighting Melkor, does so fully knowing that his actions were crazy, but still went through them with a more calm persona

Granted, the only reason a mere elf like Fingolfin was able to do so well against Melkor was due to Melkor having grown vastly diminished over the ages (which even back during the War of the Powers, Melkor was stated to be now weaker than Manwë by the time the Valar confronted Melkor in his throne room if you've read Morgoth's Ring) and having been permanently incarnated to a physical body. All the same though.... Hail to the king!!!

He swore to be a full brother of Feanor, having the Valar as their witness, and promised him love and fealty. Fingolfin would never break word and faith. He also still loved his elder brother, despite all the evil things he did. And on top of that, he knew his brother, he would not allow their people to be left with Feanor alone as their ruler.

A very nice video! Fingolfin was very strong indeed to damage Morgoth so badly. Admittedly unrelated question: I once heard that orcs were basically "flesh robots" for the Dark Lords and would do as programmed. This also makes betrayal less of an issue, but that means orcs don't have real souls. How true is this?
@MenoftheWest
@MenoftheWest 2 жыл бұрын
In terms of good vs evil, I actually personally love this explanation. If they still retained the souls of Elves, it would create a moral problem of how Orcs were dealt with over the ages.
@garmisra7841
@garmisra7841 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with Yoystan. This was a question that Tolkien himself had to wrestle with. I think he had some other proposed solutions to this conundrum by suggesting that the Orcs were basically elevated beasts because they did not possess the fea (soul, or spiritual essence) even if they had mind and hroa (a physical consciousness or identity in the living world) but they were for certain animated to evil by the influence and the will of the Dark Lord who created them in mockery of the Children of Iluvatar, elves, men and dwarves. This is one of the ways that Melkor spent his spirit and power in the world, in such a wasteful manner.

The two Uruks, Shagrat and Gorbag, when discussing the Nazgul under the Tower of Ungol, said "...and they skin the body off of you as soon as look at you, and leave you all cold in the dark on the other side." From this, it seems to me orcs thought they had souls that were independent of their bodies. Maybe the first orcs were lied to and the traditional idea of having a soul was maintained over generations? It seems to me that having a soul is hard to verify and must be taken on faith by people other than Elves.
@mortman200

Personally I don't like the idea of orcs being automatons. Enslaved sure, but making them programmed beings feels like a cop out. The thing is that orcs are almost never seen outside of a military capacity. I'd like to think that orcs outside of war and toil just do as they feel like and go back to their tribes and clans.
