I’m a stay-at-home mom and find I’m always caught up in one more thing I should be doing in the house to clean, cook, plan, whatever. I also suffer from severe anxiety and constantly feel overloaded mentally. To help find some peace, every day right after lunch, I go outside in my back yard, leave my phone inside (that one is important!), let my dogs out, let my chickens out of their pen to eat some fresh grass, and just sit down and be quiet. I prefer sitting on the ground - it helps me feel literally grounded. I watch the squirrels and birds, listen to the sounds - cars, birds, all of it, and it really helps me to feel calmer.

I am now retired but the buzz in my head just got worse. The first (could and shoulds) stuck the nerve. As I am getting older, my physical ability (arthritis, back pain) seems to be down sliding. I am constantly comparing what I used to be able to do to the frustration of what I actually can do now. As a result, I have been living with guilt and self recriminations. Your comment of giving yourself grace and compassion highly resonated. Thank you for helping me realize that it is ok that not all is possible to get done.

We need time out and to be a lot kinder to ourselves we can’t help ourselves or anyone if we’re constantly running on empty! Prioritise self care first you should find you have more energy to get things done 😀

I too am retired, and a senior, and many (many) of my friends have the same ‘complaints’ ie wanting to do what we used to do, but our bodies just can’t. It takes some time to adjust. I can’t say one ever accepts the new reality but the more we resist the harder it is on us. Sometimes we just have to let go of all of our expectations, simplify what we expect of ourselves. Good luck in the journey to enjoying retirement. 🤗

Every night, I sit with our 2 cats. When the human kids & dog are asleep for the night, the 2 cats know that I will sit with them on the couch and just be and drink my tea. I usually watch KZfaq videos or browse the internet, but it is my quiet time to listen to my own thoughts and just recharge in silence if needed. 😇

I believe that having a consistent practice of some kind of art is really helpful for stressful moments, sad times or mental health issues. And I’m talking from my own experience and experience with people I lived with. It doesn’t need to be painting or drawing, it can be cooking, gardening, stitching, machine sewing, sketching, carpentry, anything that will produce something out of our hands and imagination. It’s so satisfying to think that we made this or that. My habit for having a balanced mental health is slow stitching and art journaling. Every day I do that, even if it’s for only half an hour. But I agree with you, Vera, that physical exercise is important and I need to improve on that, because I love to walk, but I never exercise my arms properly and if I can I stay at home many days in a row. I’m a bit of a hermit 🙄💙♥️🧡💜💗💛💚🖤❤️

Hi Vera. I discovered you recently, and I wanted to let you know you’re making a difference in my life. I watch one of your videos every morning during my “me time” and 1 video right before I go to sleep. Your calming presence and kind spirit set me up for a good day and restful sleep. You are the one who helped me realize I am a highly sensitive person, and we have other similarities…veganism, perfectionism, minimalism, tai chi practice… (I think there are others). I’m so grateful to you for your presence in my life. Thank you, Vera.

I have since gotten two books out of the library on it and I am amazed how it describes me. Everything you mention in this video is excellent, I can relate to all of your points. Walk and talk stood out. I don’t have anyone to walk and talk with, very rarely. I used to journal a lot. Thank you for these beautiful bio. ❤️

I learned a good thing just yesterday....whenever I think something negative about an experience or a relationship, I try to think five positive thoughts about that same experience/relationship. Our brain naturally leans toward negative thoughts, so we benefit from purposely thinking positive thoughts to bring balance.

Lol. My HP “thought string” is paper or my phone “notes.” Basically writing in any way, shape or form. Anything from jotting down a thing I’m running out of for the shopping list, ideas, to do, plans, and finally processing all my feelings and things that bother me. I guess I don’t always take the “to do” list seriously Bcuz that could wind up being impossible. But I still have to make it leave my head, so I just let the paper or screen “hold” it for me. I don’t think of where I write things as any kind of Bible or anything. I just see it as something like containers or at times it’s like my black garbage bag for things that just need to be first expressed and then thrown away. (Like my current anger or resentment over a thing or airing of grievances or anxiety and stress or overwhelm or sadness and grief-which often helps me cry when I need to cry-etc). I need to put it somewhere Bcuz my head just gets way too full and then some bad feelings that don’t need to stay inside of me like poison. Of course I try to incorporate why I’m angry (or whatever the feelings are) and how to change things so that I don’t have constant repeats of stewing rage or angst or unnecessary grief or anxiety overwhelm etc. Our feelings really are more like car indicator lights telling us we’ve got a problem and we need to stop the usual grind and take a closer look at what is presently wrong and what needs some special attention. And when it’s really super bad, it’s more like a personal letter to God, venting and crying out for help and for other worldly wisdom beyond my mere human limitations and for real answers that actually work.

I found myself furiously making notes from this video in my commonplace book! ❣Everything resonated, but as I'm dealing with chronic pain right now, replacing SHOULD with COULD was revelatory. It's amazing how much that shift in perspective immediately makes it easier on my body and mind. And you are so right about exercise and mental health. The biggest "aha" moment for me was when I realized that exercise could (and should!) be something I enjoy, and not something I have to endure. Now I do what feels good that day, whether it's yoga, hiking, or just dancing around the house scandalizing my cats. Thank you so much for this!

Worry is a tough one. I'll turn it into a prayer and release it or write whatever it is down or do it if it's a step I'm able to do right now. That last one can be useful if you have an early schedule, appointment, whatever and you lay out your clothes, prepare food, that kind of thing, the night before. Tying the thoughts to some kind of positive release.

I get up at 4 a.m. everyday to make certain that I have quiet time. I meditate, go for a walk, make some heated water with lemon and pink salt for hydration. I also live in a neighborhood that can get noisy once the world wakes up at 7 a.m. I also like to limit the amount of media that I consume. I put my phone away for most of the day and I haven't watched any television in close to six weeks. I also schedule in white space daily. I just go to my bedroom and observe my plants while listening to calming instrumental music. For me these are great choices for my mental well being.

It made me laugh so hard when my boss said to me that she had to take a shower over something we were brooding over together, because I do just the same when I need ideas coming up. When I am stuck in my writing, when I don't know how to deal with a problem (I hate it not no say "problem" when it is just that and not a "challenge"), I take a shower or just go to the bathroom. At work, I use bathroom visits for a quick mental "clean up" as soon as things overwhelm me. I always really hated doing household chores, because I thought them a waste of precious me-time. Since I started to take those chores as me-time when I can let my thoughts just wander, I came to nearly enjoy them. Except window-cleaning. I will never come to like that! And I started doing a little bit of housework every day instead of doing the whole place on maybe a saturday morning. I do not like "mountains" of chores in front of me (having a "mountain" in front of me makes me freeze and I do not know where to start), so I now take them bit by bit. One day it's vacuuming, one day it's laundry, one day it's mopping the floors or cleaning the bathrooms. This is an advice I love my husband for: Do not look at the mountain, just lookt at the next step and take one chore after the other.

Thank you for another amazing video, Vera. I have OCPD, and your videos help me to slow down mentally. My high expectations really get in the way, and I find it hard to be easy on myself. Quiet time for me actually involves an audiobook and sewing when my son is napping, and my daughter plays video games for 30 minutes if im lucky. Because when I'm left to my own thoughts, I get anxiety and overthink. So an audiobook with a task actually helps me to... not think too much lol.

Quiet time is so important. It's so good for me. That's why I dread mornings and have been enjoying nights more. It's quiet when the house is asleep. I enjoy that. It gets so loud around here. There's 7 people and 7 dogs. Silence isn't happening unless everyone is asleep. Quiet helps lead to intentional and clear minds. So it is easier to have a clear mind if your physical space is cleaner too. I've been wanting to go for walks but I live with family that has paranoia. I'm working on it. I have pepperspray.

I love this, Vera! It's interesting how interconnected minimalism in your surroundings and minimalism in your mind are. Now that I've gotten my stuff and surroundings very minimalist, I can see how much easier it is to keep my mind de-cluttered. One of my favourite techniques that helps is to do 'morning pages' which comes from 'The Artist's Way' by Julia Cameron. As soon as I wake up (after bathroom and making coffee for ne) you write 3 standard sized pages of just whatever, basically a brain dump. Sometimes it's what I dreamt the night before, what I did the day before, whatever stuff needs to come out. It empties out the rubbish of your mind, and frees you up to be creative or just more centred and peaceful for the rest of the day. I always end my pages with a short gratitude list and positive affirmations. Also, I don't watch or listen to the news.

Hey there Vera! Great video. I think I will try out mindfulness and up my exercise routine. I enjoy having walks to and from a nearby shopping mall, that has a café. Most of the people(like the managers), know me there and sometimes I can just come in and sit down for a few minutes with my laptop and not even order anything! It's a place I can just sit and let my brain wonder, then I take the walk back home again. Also I find that my creative juices flow more when I am there although sometimes it can get noisy, but I try go there mid-morning when there are less people.

I guess I needed to find this video this moment. Thank you Vera ❤️ As an Introverted, overthinking HSP, this helped me lay aside toxic self condemnation and shame to reframe, reflect, and simplify the whirring in my brain. You are a lovely soul and your videos are soothing to watch over and over. Blessings

Hi Vera! 🤗💐Thank you for another great and calming video!✨ This is such an important topic, I love the idea of limiting information from social media and news. I struggle a lot with focusing my attention on one task, could you expand some more on that in a future video? Thanks again! 🌷💐🌺

Love all the wonderful tips. Everyday I make time to exercise for 30 minutes. I also sit in my sunroom with a good book and hot tea. To help me calm down I do my tapping for about 10 minutes everyday, sometimes numerous times a day if needed. I say - I am empowered, I am strong, I am loved. Although I get anxious, although I have pain, I know God is with me. I chose to relax and I love and accept myself. This really clears my mind. You can say whatever you want as you touch the points but this is my favorite. Have a blessed day! ❤

This is really the most difficult one for me... I always have so many ideas, what to do now, next etc...... So mindfulness is very important to me. So I try to stay awared and notice what my brain is doing.

my mom has been trying to get me into meditating by using the Insight Timer App. I really love it but she actually plays a 20 min meditation while she is in bed before she gets out of bed and its really been helping her a lot. its pretty cool to see actually but sometimes its hard for me to force myself to meditate for 20 min before getting up because im always excited to start the day lol

Currently very little is able to calm me down as I'm going to move very soon, I've been having nothing but squirrel days that leave me exhausted but also unable to sleep 🥲. It's almost like i have to make the trajectory of my future as perfect as possible and therefore i get the fixated on doing and preparing for all sorts of stuff. Many of it not having much of a time pressure on it whatsoever. Your video helped me flip a switch. Hopefully for more than this moment. Going to try catch some z's. Appreciate you! Hopefully i am able to make videos on things one day aswell.

Thank you Vera… as you know this past week has been very tough. This video feels like you made it just for me. I have been taking time to just be. To let myself feel or just breathe deeply. I have spent time in my craft room just picking up and being in the space. It’s my creative place and it’s been quite awhile since I did much of anything there. I feel so much more ready to just relax there and let myself think or feel or do whatever my soul sings to me. I’m safe and all is well even if I can not see the full picture. I can let go of all those crazy squirrels. Or as I call it the 🐒🐒🐒mind. Thank you for your wonderful spirit, kind heart, loving soul. You are such a gift to me. To us all. Blessings

I just watched the video on mental minimalism and it really resonated with me. The idea of decluttering my thoughts and focusing on the things that truly matter is something I've been struggling with for a long time. I appreciate the simple and practical tips shared in the video, and I'm excited to start implementing them in my own life. Thanks for creating this valuable content!

I like "scheduling white time" that you do. I schedule entire days off, they are usually Wednesdays and Sundays, and Sundays are my days to "get out of town", have a nice lunch somewhere, look around, go to the zoo or a museum, etc. in another area of my state. Also, I have much more time for myself now, since November, because a friend of mine who has Borderline Personality Disorder "discarded" me (BPD talk), if you know anything about that type of mental illness. He called me nasty names in his email when he dumped me. He would write me 20-page emails and get angry with me if I didn't respond to everything he said by 7:30 the next morning. He also would keep me on the phone for four (!) hours, despite my attempts to pollitely end the conversations after two then three hours. I felt badly that he seemed to hate me so much when he discarded me, and I felt guilty, even though the misunderstanding we had was over practically nothing. But like I said, I now have time to think about what I need, and to get some of my own stuff done. I like your videos, and I love the light grey colors in your beautiful furniture, and the other neutral colors. Very inspirational. Thank you.

Hi Vera! I'm watching this video while working overtime at home due to project deadlines lol, ironic, isn't it? :D But watching your videos make my mind at ease and learn a lot as well. I don't consider myself as a minimalist but more dainty or subtle in a way however I strongly believe in minimalism and wabi-sabi as a philosophy and design concept (despite me being an interior designer). This year, I focus on self-compassion, slow-living and do things with grace, I like to be at peace but at the same time I want to spend more time with the people who I love and care---achieving balance at work and personal life (I also experienced self-neglect and burnout since 2021 until last year). To be honest, I want to go back to painting, drawing, and do these things together with my social tribe again. It really made me feel serene Recovering and getting there, baby steps matter! Thank you so much for your reminders

I really liked changing ‘should’ to ‘could’ and have been changing to ‘’could’ a lot recently in my emails to friends. Should seems like such a directive, like you’re telling people that up to that point they haven’t been maybe doing something right. “Could’ to me is more of a mild suggestion, of which there could be many, but mildly saying ‘hey, why not give this a try?’. Also, the walking and talking is my favorite way to visit with someone easily and enthusiastically. Maybe the endorphins are all revved up. ha. Also I have noticed that being in water, like a hot tub or swimming, or an aerobic class also seems to lead to enthusiastic conversations or just is calming in general.

Thank you for another terrific video! I've been working on meditation lately and agree that it is very calming. In that vein, focusing on remaining present during the day also helps reduce worry. But the one you suggested that I want to add to my toolkit is the shoulds/coulds. I still am very guilty of pressuring myself with what I "should" be doing! Thank you for a wonderful suggestion for reframing!

#4 is so spot on. I know so many people who worry about things that will never affect them in daily life. Yes, some of the things happening in the world are bad, but just focus on the things YOU can do to make it better don't worry about wars you can't fix.
