Check out my reaction to Bojack Horseman: • DOCTOR REACTS TO BOJAC...
It's a Sin reviews: • DOCTOR REACTS TO IT'S ...
I LOVE Ted Lasso. This Doctor Reacts video is watching more clips from season 2. The whole season is so positive towards mental health, particularly towards anxiety and panic attacks and I found it so powerful, so I'm looking forward to watching it with you and disentangling fact from fiction.
This video covers anxiety disorders, panic, therapy, defence mechanisms, dissociation, head injuries and concussions and much more.

Recently the cast went to the White House for a discussion about mental health awareness. It felt very relevant.

I had some initial issues with Dr. Sharon as a character and therapist, but I think the scene of her reaching out to her mentor fixed a lot of those. It made it clear she knew she was making some mistakes.

It would have been a disservice to the mental health side of healthcare if they portrayed a perfect therapist; a lot of people have bad experiences with mental health services and so it's important to highlight character growth within a character representing the field to both acknowledge the aforementioned fact and reach out to any mental health professionals watching to remind them that its always important to be aware of your approach to your job and how you can improve upon it in any way

Best mental health channel I've found yet. Juxtaposing the clinical stuff with TV shows to make it more entertaining and relevant is brilliant. Thank you so much. Ted Lasso has meant to much to me during lockdown, and helping me get through some shit with a fucked up family, and abusive brother. You general positivity not only makes people feel better, but it's another step toward de-stigmatizing mental health problems, and seeking treatment for those problems in particular. I always recommend Ted Lasso (to everyone) because I believe it's one of the few shows that is making the world a better place, and your companion videos make it even better.

The corporate housing bit by Ted hit me hard. I spent 15 years as a contract consultant. One of the "perks" with working yourself up the ladder is that they put you up in a corporate apartment instead of a hotel room. You can basically figure out where you stand in the pecking order by how fancy your accommodations are, and how close you are to the office. For out of town travel gigs, the company that hired you was basically on the hook for transportation, accommodation, and, to some extent, food. You knew where you stood by reading between the lines. On long term gigs for big companies I would routinely score a corporate apartment. Fully furnished. Full kitchen, decently kitted out with basic furnishings. That was meant to be a "plum" gig, and a show of respect. For me, the corporate apartment often backfired. It was meant and intended as a physical symbol of respect, but I absolutely hated it, mostly. These are furnishings I would never have chosen for myself. This is a neighborhood I never would willingly choose to live in. I feel like an interloper, a transient ghost, a fake. I would have been much happier in a random hotel room. Better yet, a residency hotel. You get a standard hotel room plus a kitchenette and access to a washer and dryer. You can fly home for the weekend and come back to the same room and your clothes and random crap is still there. I was in some city somewhere and I was obsessed with how much I hated a particular floor lamp in my corporate apartment. "I hate you" which was displaced anger at myself. I unplugged it and put it in a closet and bought a better lamp at Target the next evening.

@@birdiekay686 An interesting side note is that the apartment is way cheaper than the hotel to the company that hired you. 80 dollars a day vs. 800 a month. Easy math. It is in their best financial interest to rent an apartment and furnish it with basic stuff and just hold that on the books. Saves them a couple grand per month per person. There are businesses set up to furnish corporately leased apartments. They definitely need to hire on folks with better aesthetic sensibilities. Usually, it was just randomly thrown together cheap crap you could lease at a Rent-A-Center. Living in such a place was weird. You realize you are sitting on a couch you didn't buy, watching a TV you didn't buy, sleeping in a bed you did not buy. One morning I stepped out of the shower and realized I had no towels. That was a foreseeable oversight I missed entirely. I used a t-shirt. You are working in Des Moines or Orlando or Manhattan or Overland Park or Olympia or San Francisco for weeks or months. One time, for a year and a half. You know no one in town. You are isolated and alone. Home is a crappy apartment in uptown Minneapolis, but it feels amazing because it is filled with stuff owned by you and you chose it. And you have friends there. It is a luxury to be able to call up a friend and ask if they want to go the CC Club for a few beers and hang out. When you are a transient worker in a random city you know no one. You are isolated. Best bet was a good dive bar. Be chatty, tip well, ask the regulars questions about their live and empathize, treat the bartenders and servers with due respect, and, in a week, you will have ten new friends. Some are super sketchy, but you get what you get. You need local allies and folks you can just hang out with and blow off steam with. Go to a ballgame, go bowling, whatever. Work travel that puts you there for weeks or months is isolating and you need to actively counteract that. Plus people are really happy to show you around and introduce you to the cool shit in their town. Local pride is a definite thing. Tell somebody you are brand new in town and ask them about what's to check out and you will get interesting answers and often an invite to tag along. Way better and healthier than sitting alone in a sterile room and obsessing.

This was great! Really enjoying these reactions. Out of curiosity, what did you make of the Wembley locker room scene? I'm not a therapist, but to me Jamie's use of repeated phrases such as "Don't speak to me like that" and tried to defuse the situation with his dad the way he couldn't in the season 1 finale felt like things he'd have learned in the therapy sessions we see him start early in the season. I'd be interested to get your take on it, especially given the long-term child abuse aspect.

6:07 I know you didn't comment on it, but I noticed the therapist does something that convinces Ted to come in and sit down. She demonstrates that, during their previous sessions, she listened to what he said, "You said you never quit".

The first time I interacted with a therapist in a session I got so anxious I basically vibrated and twitched and could not stop. It was impossible to stop writhing. Tried to stop, to control my mien, physical behavior reaction, demeanor, affect. Couldn't. I was way too stressed out. Reining it back in wasn't happening. I was freaking out. Couldn't stop. I basically vibrated for several minutes. I thought I was prepared mentally; I wasn't. It was overwhelming. I have to open up now and explain. I was woefully underprepared. I was terrified and desperately wanted to bolt. The experience was a bit too real. I stuck with it even though I was profoundly frightened.

Ted Lasso and Dr. House are on opposite sides of the cynicism vs idealism scale, but they both use jokes as deflection. Quite interesting.

I've never quite got the issue with 'paid to care'. Admittedly that lines up with a lot of social things I don't understand, but it strikes me as shallow and unconsidered. A therapist has to be effective to be good at their job. Like any other job, if a therapist is not good at their job, they generally don't get to progress far in it. I know that it's considerably more personal in nature, what a therapist does, but it still sounds to me pretty much like saying "I don't want you to style my hair because I don't think you really care if I look good or not, you're just doing it because you're paid to." "I don't think you really care about my love of hot showers so I don't want you working on my plumbing." Plus, they chose to be a therapist. One of my friends tried to dip their toes into the profession and decided against it, said it was one of the most confusing and frustrating things he'd ever tried to study for. It's not an easy job, and it's often a thankless one with a lot of taboo still surrounding it. Every time I've heard of a therapist that was really bad at their job it was because they cared too much. Because they got personally attached and started inflicting their personal goals on the practice, trying to create a pretty garden instead of letting the area grow as it needs. [Not that I have anything against gardens, mind you.] It's a hard balance to strike. A therapist has to care, what you want them to be good at is being careful about what it is they care about.

I would love to hear your thoughts on the show Yellowjackets, and I know there would be others that would be interested in it as well. Just a thought? I know you're probably busy, so it's understandable if you can't. Anyways, thank you again for taking the time to make these videos.
