Mercedes actually brought back the wheels for the GLS AMG and the GT AMG but people don't appreciate it so I don't think they will keep them in their line up

You missed the very important fact that AMG also gave the engine DOHCs over the SOHC M117, as well as boring it out to 6.0 . This was a major reason for the power increase.

Hi, yes I found AJ's reference to "using the engine from the W126" a bit interesting too. He says this 300E 6.0 is 1988. The W126 used a single ohc per bank M117 V8. The image of the engine compartment showed a twin-cam per bank! The M119 twin cam wasn't introduced by Mercedes until 1989 on their R129 SL. The W126 carried on with the single cam M117 until 1991. So you're saying that AMG made their own twin-cam head (before Mercedes introduced their own!), just for this car? That's interesting, I never knew there was a twin-cam M117. I love the old characterful all-alloy M117 in a say a 1982 or 1983 500SL. Cheers.

@@brianevans4618 yes the 80s 300 E Hammers all had bespoke AMG DOHC cylinder heads built on to M117 block. Then they switched to using the M119 when that engine was released in the 90s.

You guys are my heroes no one has ever done a proper review or test of one of these cars I mean Chris Harris drove one there is one from the AMG Channel but it's in a different language this is the ultimate automobile and I just commend you guys for putting this out there for everybody I will watch this video hundreds of times before I die. @@autogefuehl I'm a huge fan of tuned European cars. Ruf being my favorite. I would truly enjoy a channel the focus on that and obscure tuners. I understand that its difficult to find them let alone talk the owner into reviewing it on camera but non the less that would be a dream come true. Cars like bb magic top or treser hunter strosek cars. Just a suggestion. Again bless you for getting a true premerger amg for us to enjoy. Godspeed

@@gregoryfranks7347 Hi - Yes, interesting that this is a pre-AMG-merger car in the museum! This was a media event organised by 'Mercedes Classic', essentially part of the Mercedes-Benz museum, and they let "journalists" out in a selection of their cars, from the first cars to the modern. Carwow did a video on some of the later cars too. Mat drove this 300 E 6.0. But as others have commented, it wasn't running very well, and the 560 SEC Mat also drove, performed better! Hopefully AJ might have done a brief video on the 560 SEC...? Godspeed.

Another great review, Ajay! This is touching my Mercedes-Benz enthusiast heart. Thanks for reviewing so many of my dream cars that are in this place, and tagging on a history lesson. The history of Mercedes-Benz is always been my favourite in the automotive industry. And I will say again; I wish I could get one of these in my dream Mercedes-Benz garage. I also really want to drive this. Cheers to you for the review, Ajay. Cheers to you for the visuals, Thomas B. I like how Mercedes-Benz use to not be a fan of aftermarket tuning. I felt the same as they did. I thought low of those who do aftermarket tuning. I still do. But now I only like Mercedes-Benz cars to be tuned by AMG, Brabus, and Mansory. I am still not a fan of people tuning their cars outside those brands. For me, it is only from AMG, Brabus, and Mansory that my Mercedes-Benz should come from. But with AMG today, I can just get it already from the dealerships rather than taking it to them like with Brabus and Mansory. I really like how they kept the option of having the AMG Monoblock rims on the AMG cars today like the GLS 63, the AMG GT 63 S, and so on. I take that as a respectful nod to the AMGs of old. Cool. If I could afford the new GLS 63 or the AMG GT 63 S, I would put those rims on them when building the car in the specifications. I wonder if the S63 and all-new S73 beasts are will have those rims available as an option. I am picturing the rims on the new S-Class W223 with AMG accents on it. I am loving it quite a bit. I saw a render with just the rims. How many AMG badges are there on this car? Good question. Haha, I am not going to look at the video. I am going to use memory from when I last saw this entire car to see if I remember. I am going to go with...seven. Am I correct, Ajay? I think I am wrong. 😂 Please, I would like to see more reviews of classic Mercedes-Benz cars, if you guys get more chances to film with them. Thank you. It means a lot to me. 🤗

I love the pre-merger Mercedes-Benz they’re absolutely phenomenal and what Mercedes-Benz should still be producing. Back then it was absolutely the best or nothing.

I had an W124, not "The Hammer" 😁 for some years and I still miss it 😒 Did you know that the W124 has an aerodynamic coeficient(?), I wanted to say record, but I cannot remember precisely. Anyways it is about air drag, the numbers are 0,25 or 0,28? and the rest of the car makers are working on that ever since, to match. Not many succeed. When you look at the car you kind af find that hard to believe, because it doesn't look all that aerodynamically.

@Stefan G. .. Agreed. The W124 sedan of the time was the high watermark of the aerodynamic coefficient of production cars. The owner's manual of my '94 E-320 coupe excuses the 2 different size rear side mirrors to aerodynamic's. The W124 cars brought the industry many firsts. The W124 is solid as a rock . . . . Too bad the States didn't get the late w124's with the AMG I6 cyl 3.6 w/5sp auto gearbox.

It's 0.24, which was, and is, very good, and one reason why performance versions of the W124 can reach 180-200 mph

It was 0.28 for the 200/200D with 185/65R15 tires. Later lowered to 0.26 for the facelift.

I dont think its a wide body the front fenders look normal i could be wrong. The coupe were definitely wide bodied and so was the 500e but I believe the amg hammer saloon had stock fenders. Great video and review.

Geometric but sleek? It has near class leading drag coefficiency, you mentioned 300ce? Chunkier steering than others of this era? Looks dimensionally similar to my w124..anyway great alternative to 500e

When I was a teen, AMG North America was headquartered on Ogden Avenue in Westmont, IL, not far from where I grew up. I went their pretty frequently to look at what they were working on. One of the guys working there explained that they way to tell a Hammer from other AMG-modded 300's was the spoiler. On the Hammer, the spoiler was a seamless shape blended into the trunk and rear quarter panels, like in this image: mbworld.org/forums/attachments/e-class-w124/147947d1232471381-1987-original-amg-hammer-sale-ebay-9-08-063.jpg The rest had them as a bolt ons, like the example in this video. Any possibility that this example isn't authentic? Its truly hard to tell, and there aren't very many authentic Hammers.

I don't believe that theory is true, I have seen many real Hammer examples without flush molded spoiler on the back. I can see why someone would opt for it, given the extensive body work AMG offered.

The commentator mentioned the manually adjusting driver side-view mirror, and lightly disparaged it for being so 80's not not power like mirrors of today. I can tell you that I have that same manual adjusting side mirror on my 89 560 SL, and that mechanism is far superior to any power mirror I have ever encountered, including the one on my 2016 E400 ! Powering the driver-side mirror was not an improvement in any way.

With very long videos (the usual reviews of new cars), we have so many situations per year where it is even hardly possible to upload full hd depending on bandwidth. We can film and edit 4K for years, the no.1 problem is bandwidth. Welcome to 2020.

@@tunctaylan One I don't think the 'money from KZfaq' is enough. Also, even if that money is a handsome amount, it's not just the BW where it would be supposed to be spent. There are many more things where large sum of money is required to be spent to make such a video possible. I think those are the more important areas to spend money on. As for being outdated, there are many.. many channels that upload in 1080p; so the resolution isn't 'outdated' yet. And, we can surely be considerably satisfied with that resolution; even if your screen can handle 4k. No need to make a big deal about it.
