Oil Catch Can: amzn.to/2FNAb30
Your high mileage Mercedes loses oil through various air passages (mainly the re-circulation of un-burnt gasses. The oil drip pan (see my other video) normally prevents the oil from this gaseous escape. However as your engine's mileage increases so does the parts and your oil drip pan and gasket even when changed can still allow oil to escape. The oil catch can solves this issue.

My wife and I are in the process of buying a used 2008 V6 diesel V221 chassis. I’m very keen on the oil catch can made by Mann & Hummel as its design has some fail safes in it. The model is Provent 2000. Only thing I’m worried about is space. I got one on our 2007 Toyota Landcruiser Prado which works a treat.

Hello Keith , I am delighted to hear that your recovery is going very well. I also commend you on the Informational and Educational Videos you produce. Keith I went ahead and purchased the Mercedes Oil Separator Catch Can listed on this video. My question is as follows, Can you provide me names of the additional items you used for this installation and where I can purchase them. BTW, it's for my 2011 MB ML350 4Matic. Thanking you in advance. Lou

This is not the place for the catch can. This is breather. Here the fresh air should come from the intake (after MAF sensor) into the valve cover into the engine. - The PCV is in the other side of the engine.

Love seeing your ingenuity... instead of buying a bigger barb you took a smaller hose and made it larger. Is there any issue with the hose touching the firewall or the engine? I wanted to make sure it wouldn't melt or anything. Also do you have a custom brake booster vacuum hose? Mine has always sat on top of the engine cover which I find to be a real pain yours I notice is tucked behind everything.

First off, thank you so much for all of your uploads! I was able to repair my steering fluid and coolant leaks, thanks to you! I have a quick question for you though. Recently I noticed a little smoke coming from the rear passenger side of the engine bay from my '06 ML350. I was wondering if that is a symptom of oil getting into my air intake manifold and if this would be a procedure to eliminate that? My ML has around 77,000 miles on it. Hope to hear from you soon! Cheers mate!

Also what size are those elbow joints used to connect catch can hoses to crankcase hoses? An Amazon link would be very much helpful. Was going to do that on wife’s 03 SLK. Tons of oil in the intake. But learned that the lower breather hosing on left side under intake was the problem. I changed those hoses and check valve, cleaned brass port attaching points at cylinder head. Replaced hoses on the upper right side due to age. Removed intake air hoses before and after intercooler and cleaned. Now no oil in the intake air and PCV system runs as it should. I get why anyone would do a catch can but there is still a problem with the PCV system that needs to be fixed.

Any update on this catch can? Does it work? Also, I think the hoses are not rated for oil / gas. It may start to breakdown over time. You might want to change that out to gas lines instead. Also, why would you want to cut the existing line. Why not connect the new lines to the end instead? On a separate topic, aside from this pcv cover and tubing that goes into the air intake. Are there other hose / ports that feeds into the air intake? If so, would / should this be catch can as well? I notice there is another tube that feeds from the front right side of the engine (driver side), this seems to be a pcv cover too, smaller tube though. This tube however spits in a "Y" and goes to a circular box on the (driver) front corner of the engine bay and then a tube that goes all the way back and behind the firewall. Not sure where this goes to.... any idea?

The only question is isn't the pcv suppose to do this work in the first place? The intake would still get oil in it, my understanding is there is micro-oil fume getting transfer back to the intake breather and all of this is getting collected in the intake.

Retractable roof. Raises and lowers fine. But when lowered and car hits a bump or make right turns with a little momentum, roof button lights up and beeps. I am guessing a sensor problem on right side. Maybe needs adjusting or cleaning or both. The whole roof system is new to me. When top up I can clearly see panel gap too narrow so there is slight contact with truck door and body at right passenger door when closing trunk. Found how to adjust hinge there but already at max edge of slots. Hope that was clear enough.
@iRepairAutos
@iRepairAutos 6 жыл бұрын
Yes that's definitely a loose electrical connection somewhere, causing the system to beep. Usually the beeping/flashing red light is directly related to the trunk sleeve and it's sensor. I would start by examining the sensor in the trunk and the sleeve. It could be something as easy as the sleeve loosing contact momentarily in those scenarios you listed.

Good job! I'm interested to see what it will collect in a few thousand miles. I'm curious, why did you decide to do this? It's usually done prevalently on turbo direct injection engines to minimize carbon buildup but I've never seen anyone attempt it on port injection.
@iRepairAutos
@iRepairAutos 6 жыл бұрын
I'm guessing it will collect moisture, and some oil. I did it because even though the oil drip pan does this job I've seen the oil light coming on with no signs of oil leaks and some evidence of oil in the inside of the air intake manifold.
@oda0111
@oda0111 6 жыл бұрын
iRepair Autos Yeah, I replaced my whole PCV system upon following your videos, even went further with replacing all the hoses and the housing on bank 2 and there's still a little oil going through to the intake manifold through that house you split in half (the one coming from the oil drip pan cover). It's not much, I would say less than 100ml in the last 7k miles so it's not tripping any low oil light. Maybe you have other leaks, I saw there's some on the top part of your bell housing. Check the rear main seal and the oil plugs.
@iRepairAutos
@iRepairAutos 6 жыл бұрын
There is probably other leaks like you said. I've changed the oil plugs - the rear main seal hasn't been looked at yet. That's a good point. Thanks for that suggestion. A good excuse for me to take the transmission out. :)
@oda0111
@oda0111 6 жыл бұрын
Ha ha, I hope it's not that. I had to deal with a rear main on a 2.0 Tiguan, that was a PITA. I think MB cars are easier to work on, especially the M272 on your car, so it shouldn't be too difficult. If it was the rear main seal, you should see splatter inside the bell housing and I think there should also be some spots under the car. The only way you wouldn't see any oil drip under the vehicle is if it somehow throws all of it on the exhaust and burns it, but that's unlikely. You'd smell it, it would be very pungent. Another oil burning culprit might be the valve stem seals. You can check that by letting the motor idle for 10 minutes until it gets warm and then accelerate it to about 4-5000rmp and if there's white, blueish smoke coming out the exhaust then that's your issue. Is yours smoking out of the exhaust? Or if you run your finger on the inside of the exhaust tip, does it collect a lot of black dust? On my M273 there is little to none of that, so I know it's not burning oil.

This engine is not a direct injection is it? I mean like new VW that injects the fuel directly into the combustion chamber and bypasses the valves so they get really dirty with carbon buildup from oil vapor. Is this mainly for protecting the plastic tumble flaps in the intake manifold? Is it only needed for higher mileage cars?
