Mercedes' radical new F1 sidepods spark 2022's first tech debate

While Red Bull’s sidepods were the big talking point of the first pre-season Formula 1 test of 2022, Mercedes has resoundingly stolen its thunder with its ultra-narrow, super shrink-wrapped design that has appeared in Bahrain this week.
But how has Mercedes achieved this, how are they supposed to work and is it legal?

Have to admit, Mercedes’ definitely thinks outside the box. Their interpretation of the rules are genius. This is what I love about F1. Let’s just see how well their vision performs on track.

I have been smiling from ear to ear during this pre-season so far. This is one of the things that has been missing from F1 the past few regulation changes. All of the different interpretations of the rules, the different solutions. It's awesome. I don't think we've seen this much variance in designs since the '90s. Maybe even the '80s. Unfortunately, ultimately one concept will reign supreme over all and then all the teams will again look the same, but I'm enjoying it while it lasts.

James Allison has been the most underrated person in F1 for half a decade now. For all the (deserved) praise Adrian Newey gets for his hyper-aggressive designs at Red Bull, Allison deserves significantly more for the technical work that Mercedes has achieved since 2017. His cars have won the WCC every year he's been there, with an average WDC finish of 2.1 FOR BOTH CARS; a perfect 1-2 every year would be an average of 1.5, 2nd place is Red Bull down at 4.7, followed by Ferrari at 5.3. Absolutely insane engineering dominance, in my opinion he's the clear cut #1 engineering mind involved with F1 today

Us Fans have to remember, "Testing" does not mean it meets the final design. Perhaps going "extreme" allows the Team to see how much cooling the engine needs in the warm sun. Then take that data into consideration for the final spec. The Teams need to make an overall balanced car that can sustain the engine and gearbox for multiple races.

That is partly true. I think Mercedes have had an insane car that deserves all the respect it got, but the difference has been the power unit for quite some time now. I think the last three seasons, Red Bull have been at least on par with Mercedes when it comes to aero and chassis. That’s why Red Bull managed to always snatch a few victories on the lower power circuits. As a complete package the Mercedes has been miles ahead for almost a decade. That can not be denied.

The biggest thing at the first few races at least, will be any aggressive closing off of overtaking, as was common last year. If either breaks those huge floor areas, then downforce is gone and the car arguably undrivable. That could result in some shock results.

As a Red Bull fan, as long as this is safe I think it should definitely be allowed. I hate the mentality of both FIA and teams trying to attack innovation rather than accepting progress and trying to work on their own versions or leapfrog it. Merc have made an incredible step forwards, both from the power unit and from the packaging, and frankly that is exactly what the sport is about and what it has been missing. Nobody complained about the Red Bull inlet, why are the clever Merc sidepods now an issue?

Some had high rake and others low. Can someone please explain how this incredible new design can cope with the required heat rejection of a 1000hp powertrain? I understand that the water radiators will require an optimum surface area to do the job via the cold-air intake/s, but this also requires a larger and minimally restricted exit volume to achieve the required cooling/pressure drop across the cooler matrix. I also understand that 'saddle' cooler systems are used and mounted higher up, but how is this possible within the tiny volumes that exist between the chassis tub and powertrain volumes? (PS, Merc has also run the car in this hot-test with the upper cooling exits masked off, without the car rolling to a stop in a huge ball of steam!!!). Are they running the engine at (previously unseen) extremely high temps? Also! Is this design cooling model based on LEADING the races? We will remember the cooling issues Merc had when they had to follow! Thanks in anticipation..

I am guessing that the top aero that is attached to the side mirror completes the width requirement and that the sidepod air inlet is the minimum required size. I am assuming that the FIA expected the top width aero above would be connected to the bulge at the bottom of the sidepod but this is maybe not explicit in the rules. So the sidepod is therefore smaller with the bottom bulge and mirror wing meeting the edges of the legality box. This is my guess.

All I can see is a major safety issue - especially racing wheel to wheel at high speed... Any car along side this mercedes runs the risk of being flipped over if the other cars leading wheel mounts that lower floor at the side of the car. The angles leading up from the floor are a perfect ramp that would see a competing car launched into the air. One of the main functions of sidepods was to stop this very thing if contact happened during racing. I think its very dangerous for other drivers but hey what do I know...

There's a cone that forms part of the crash structure directly under that skin. It has to be there, and something has to cover it, so the mirror mount is classed as 'bodywork'. Bodywork is allowed to have an aerodynamic effect, so it's legal. The only parts that might not be legal are the 4 small vertical fins underneath/behind the mirror. Those might have to be removed if anyone protests.
