Mercedes W140 - Rear Trim Restoration Project

Hello W140 fans,
Today, I am sharing with you a great little weekend project to revamp the rear end of your moldy Mercedes!
As far as I am aware, these pieces of trim were only used between 1991-1999 on most if not all S-Class models!
The vehicle shown in this project is a 1992 300SD W140 wheelbase, and the trim style seen here is common between 1991-1995.
In the mid 90's, Mercedes changed the layout of the trim to a tree piece arrangement, but I imagine the basic process can be applied to all of the S-Classes!
This project really breaths new life into the back end of your Mercedes, and is a fun and easy way to start learning about the nuances of these cars!
*I FORGOT TO MENTION IN THE VIDEO, BUT I HIGHLY SUGGEST YOU DRILL 2-3 SMALL HOLES IN THE BOTTOM OF THE TRIM ONCE THE REPAIR HAS BEEN MADE IN ORDER TO ALLOW WATER TO FLOW OUT !!*

Excellent video on how to fix a common problem on the W140 Chassis Mercedes Benz cars. Only wish you did more videos as you do an excellent job of showing all the steps necessary to repair or replace worn out items.

Im doing this sht today on my W140 now! Thanks for this! I keep a pair of brand new ones in my ebay shopping cart but can’t bring myself to spend the $350+ bucks! You da man!!

Yeah it's difficult to justify, you can probably get another 3-4 years out of them if you do this fix. Mine are starting to wear really bad now, once the actual plastic begins to crack (not just the seal) water will find a way in. I found a great deal on eBay from California which includes the whole rear light assembly as well. This way they will both look the same. I would recommend hunting for chassis parts from warm, dry climates as much as possible!

Thanks for this. I've got my reflectors taken apart and will be painting them "clear red" to match the taillights.....a'la Maybach rear end. That pink was driving me crazy!!

It looks a whole lot better for sure, but the clear plastic is STILL pink! I thought that was what this video was focusing on at first...

Thanks for the video! I just do not understand yet how to separate the two parts. Is heating with a hair dryer enough and then I can separate the plastic part and the metal part? So lever apart?

With this video you make me get along with my car. What about the uneven gaps around the trunk lid?

There are two red tabs on the underside of the trunk lid, play around with them and if you get the right combination, it should allow you to close the trunk properly. Is the trunk handle popping out for you?
