Mercedes W164/ML320 Rear SAM Repair - brakes lights and rear hatch

Sudden failure of brake lights, turn signal, fuel gauge and rear hatch on a Mercedes W164 / ML320 CDI. All due to rear SAM circuit board component failure. Replaced transistors and added bodge wire to resolve bad via hole connection between board layers. I hope you find this video useful. I like your video very much. You're a good teacher. Growing up, my dad fixed everything from the clothes dryer to flat tires. I try to do the same and i continue to learn so much! That's despite well meaning friends saying. 'Why don't you get a new one / take it to the shop / call a repairman?" That's the last resort. The first being, 'Let me take a look. Maybe it's something I can fix."

Very well done, nice job on the video explanation. I was taking my ML in to the dealer to be traded and, from this video, it looks like the R-SAM failed; maybe I'll take a look at it and see if I can fix it. Funny, I'm now kinda stuck with it so I'll need more videos on all my upcoming problems....

Great videao. With the rear SAM out of action I can't move the passenger seat forwards - any tips on how to achieve this?

I have to replace th rear Sam as no signal from it I have the same part number as you where did you get it I am having a hard time finding the one I need please help it was water damaged. Thank you

First of all thank you for your videos. I have a problem with my fuel gauge which always shows full. I think the problem comes from the rear SAM (I also have a problem with the tailgate which does not open systematically). Can you tell me which part of the SAM manages the fuel? I want to check if I have bad contact on the SAM. A big thank-you !

The rear SAM controls all of these items. Fuel level senders are connected to the rear SAM, same goes for the tailgate switch. My advice, pull out the rear SAM, crack it open, and check it for water damage or dirt contamination.

My other advice is to check the fuel level floats, sometimes they can get hung up on the fuel hoses.

I have removed my SAM from the back of my ML350 because one of the lights will not work. I have even bought another complete tail light, but the bulb supply from the SAM is not "on". I am trying to take the SAM board out of the case, i have opened the case and have access to the bottom of the board, but it will not easily come out, off the plastic posts. Have any advice? I am afraid to pull too hard.

Never mind. I discovered that there are plastic clips (2) on each connector that attach to the top c of the case.

Looks like you figured it out. You need to use 2 flat head screwdrivers to pry up the plastic case. THen look for burned out SOT23 transistors on the board. Use a jewelers loup to find any burned out legs on the transistors and look for circuit traces that have burned out too.

It would be useful for a tear down video. I have always wanted to find out what kind of components are on this that can cause the rear lights to fail.
