To all those people who don't understand the 6.3 saying that it is an 6.2 liter engine, the 6.3 is a reference to the first v8 engine AMG used in motor racing in the sixties. This engine was also the first production v8 produced by Mercedes and was called the M100.

@Mert Turan - Thank you for your question. There are several performance levels for the AMG 6.3-liter V8 engine. The strongest variant is built in the S 63 AMG with a maximum output of 525hp. The performance in general not only depends on the engine, but also on the exhaust system. Also, the performance level is directly correlated to the competition and the market.

The best engine ever! How could you get rid of it :( I wish Mercedes could have an option which allows someone to pay a little more and still get this engine on newer Mercedes models.

For me this is the best natural V8 ever build. I love the M156 in my C63 Performance Package Plus.

I have a 2008 C63 and did some research 1 month prior to end of warranty, and to my disbelief found several threads indicating problems with the engine that require a complete rebuild. Immediately contacted my dealer with the information and they agreed to a complete engine rebuild at a cost of $55,000 Australian. Lucky it was covered under warranty!!!!

An engine that went through all that research and development just to end up getting faulty head bolts that break and cause head gasket issues.

My wish for AMG: bring N/A V8s back, and make all the AMG engines truly "one man, one engine" again as well (no V6 mass produced "AMG" nonsense). AMG buyers don't care how much the MPG is going to be, really (at least that's the case for all AMG owners I know), besides - turbos only are economical if you run as smoothly and steadily as possible - any performance engine (turbo, supercharger, naturally aspirated) will have about the same 5~7km/L ratio if driven (close) to the limit (hard accelerations, mid-high downshifts to help the car stop, slight throttle cornering, ESP always in Sport or Off of course, and all the things that are - to me - the major reason why one would buy a sportier car to begin with, to actually drive it, really work it up and work with it, whenever possible).

I have a 2008 C63 AMG estate with this great M156 engine in it and I honestly love this engine, this 6.2 litre v8 is impressive to look at under the hood and very responsive/rev-happy :) All I can say is WELL DONE TO THE GUYS AT MERCEDES AMG - THIS IS THE PROPER AMG ENGINE WHICH REVS HIGHLY, NOT AN ORDINARY MERCEDES ENGINE WHICH AMG HAVE 'TWEAKED' BY RE BORING & SUPERCHARGING. My engine puts out 487bhp but I can just imagine what the 525bhp version of the M156 must be like - AWESOME !

@TheCrankshaftRotator - Thank you for your comment. As we previously explained, the engine size is measured by 100ccm which means as soon as you are over 100ccm (eg below), it counts as full 100ccm. Here are some examples of different manufacturers: BMW E90 320i (2007/08) Engine: 1995ccm is called a 2 Liter engine Mercedes SL 500 (2007) Engine: 5462ccm is called a 5.5 liter engine Audi A4 B6-8E 3.0 TDI V6 Engine: 2967ccm is called a 3 liter engine

Beautiful but I wish MB would replace the faulty headbolts in all M156's at a reasonable cost to loyal customers BEFORE the engines hydraulic out of warranty :(

I love the sound of this engine. Exhaust manifolds have never sounded so good until now. If I had to say one engine was a threat to the chevy small block, this would be it. I don't think it has the same flexibility though.

yeah, how about the lifters not spinning when you get to about 50,000 miles, how about the upper cam shafts not getting equal oil to the lower ones, how about the defective spark plugs that leak after the engine has been shut off...oh but they perfected it though

second to none in terms of reliability ? So how come there was a huge recall of the M156 in US. I mean I love this engine to death but lets not call it super reliable if facts show different.

@damnsonson In Germany displacement is always measured by tenths which means that an engine with 6.208 cc is a 6.3 liter engine vs. a 6.199 a 6.2 liter engine. And getplaning is correct, the 6.3. is sort of a brand for amg engines, thats why the latest engines with 5.5 liter twinturbos are also labelled 6.3 such as the ML 63, E 63 etc

@MrDAllen1124 - Thank you for your question. The Zonda and Huayra use different engines. The Zonda used the naturally aspirated V12 engine M120 (in the beginning with 7.0L, then starting with the Zonda S 7.3 with 7.3L), whereas the Huayra uses the V12 biturbo engine M158.

The increase of output (from 457 PS to 525 PS) is purely electronic. However, there are several renewals between the two different versions of the engine: such as forged pistons, connection rod and weight-reduced crankshaft from the SLS AMG. Might I just ask with these variants, do they feature physically different components? I mean, for example, are the internals made of stronger materials to withstand greater stresses, or is it just ECU tuning to make it more powerful, in addition to the exhaust system.

@damnsonson 6.3 is an homage to the old 6.3 litre fuel injected V-8 engine that came out in the late 60's / early 70's. It was used in the 600 Limo and the 300SEL6.3 and was the first engine modified by AMG for racing in the European Touring Car Championship. The engine had Bosch mechanical fuel injection and a tuned intake and also cast iron exhaust headers.

While the AMG 6.2L V8 has more power than the 6.2L LS3 V8 as well as the 6.4L Hemi V8 and 5.0L Coyote V8 the AMG V8 also has more reliability issues compared to those V8s from the Big 3 as well.

It was the best engine I ever had in a Mercedes. So sad that it is gone

In 1969 when I was 17 I worked for a car dealership in Watford, U.K. and I was given the job of delivering a brand new 300 SEL 6.3 to Belfast by way of Dublin, Ireland. refused entry at Dun-lourie re import duties I then had to drive to Ayre, Scotland, I road tested the Mercedes under all conditions, when I was 27 I bought myself a 300SEL, Outstanding!

I second that. That's why you see so many 80s and 90s W123 and W124 Mercedes still on the road with 200k + miles and some with interiors that only look a few years old. Unlike cars a quarter to half their age that are labeled "disposable". With materials selected with quality assurance standards on par with China and India. Back then the engineers selected the quality and materials to be used, not "bean counters" of today just concerned with the bottom dollar or profit margins.

One question, and this is off-topic: I know the Pagani Zonda and Huayra both use a Mercedes-AMG V12, but they aren't the SAME V12, are they? I've been trying to find this out for a while, since the Zonda and Huayra don't sound NEARLY the same. I hear that they both use a 7.3L V12, so I was just wondering.

i'd like to know what's the point of the black series, as clarkson pointed out in "thrills", the black series CLK costs more than the normal one but isn't really faster, however it is also a car which loves to go sideways and creating tiresmoke :) (most thrilling car in the DVD)

So the M156 was the first all AMG developed engine? I thought it was the M157 (the current twin turbo V8). Perhaps the car magazines I read were wrong to state that. The M159 would be an all AMG design too then?

I admit though, modern cars nowadays suffer from electrical issues, especially some models from BMW, Audi and Mercedes were prone to fail in certain areas, mechanically the engines are just fine, breakdowns were caused by electrical components.

Among others...also E 63 (both the w211 (514 hp) and w212 (525 hp)), CL 63, CLK 63, CLS 63, ML 63, R 63, and S 63! Now the 5.5 biturbo has taken over! The SLS has a futher refined version with 571 hp! The AMG versions of the SLK, GL and G-class never had this engine!

@BossManOG - Thank you for your comment. As AMG was founded in 1967, there were no AMG race engines in the 50's. The AMG 6.3 liter V8 is the first engine that was fully developed from scratch by Mercedes-AMG. There is no counterpart engine from Mercedes-Benz. Back in the beginning of AMG, there were of course race engines that were built, but they were always based on Mercedes-Benz engines.

People will be lining up like at Chilkoot Pass to get one of these engines. They spray ceramic on a pistons' crown, but not on the combustion chamber. Ethanol based fuels need higher/lower temps, high pressure injection, big spark and compression. Can an engine work well without certain fuels all the time? This is a finicky engine, unlike the good old Briggs & Stratton, in which the piston never meets the valves, even during a blizzard in January.
