Explanation of importance of clean Flame Arrestor solved my problem that I have been working on for 2 weeks. I have had multiple boat people help me and they did not figure that out. I had flooding in my engine. The combo of the Needle and the flame arrestor worked. thanks

dlarremore thank you for watching the video 😊 I’m not sure if you have the same engine as my but I also change my spark plugs every 3 months because I use my boat a lot and man this thing is like a monster that eats spark plugs.. I have hurth transmission on my boat so they start making weird noises where the engine is not running so good so when I can hear my transmission I know it’s time for a tune up 😊 I hope it helps. Thank you again

Check your ignition system. Distributor cap and rotor, spark plugs, spark plug cables. You are probably running short a spark plug or two, from there on, fuel pressure and stuff but easy pease you have her straight in no time! Thank you for watching the video 🙃

My engine hesitates and dies when I give it throttle, I really have to pump it back and forth to get it going but once it's on plane it runs great. Coming back to idle twice I heard a pop in the spark arrestor. Cleaned the spark arrestor, seafoam, and some carb cleaner, but didn't fix the problem. Bought a new fuel water separator and carb rebuild kit on the way. Doesn't look like there is a fuel filter in the metal coupling to the carb on my 4.3, maybe prev owner took it out. Just got the boat in March, been running great until about July 4, and it has just gotten worse and worse.

Thank you for watching the video bud! Well you are going to right direction.. backfired can happen on a lean mixture to but more often than not the problem resides on the rich side, take your distributor cap off and and check how it looks down there it’s probably time for a new one and check your ignition timing because if it is even a little bit off can cause backfire and spark plugs and wires should be one of the next things to, The last thing on this list would be your fuel pump failing and at that point right there you have done a full service and you probably will have reached the problem, the next thing that would cause backfires will be bad valves and stuff but don’t think that should be a problem, it’s usually something simple

I feel for you I have 1 7.4L to take care of not 2 like you, I just did a refit last year, put in a long block with new exhaust and a full fwc system no more corrosion, with a industrial heat exchanger
@Cruisingthesouth
@Cruisingthesouth 3 жыл бұрын
I did switch mine to a fresh water cooled system and I have to say I do sleep better at night LOL but mine is a half system so the engine is cooled by antifreeze but the full exhaust system still gets salt water. I was told that the half system cools a little better than the full close loop but I guess not enough where would actually matter.

Cole Diffin thank you for watching the video 😊 the belt only goes backwards on the tensioner quite easy to replace and the load of the belt should be good because I went to west marine and asked for the belts for my engine but again can’t trust anyone 100% 😂

Hey I notice that your carburetor has a plug on the bottom of it? What’s that for is that a drain plug? I’ve got one in the same spot on my 4.3 mercruiser but it has a rubber hose that extends 5 inches out plugged by a spark plug (previous owner smh) so I thought it connected to something at first but now think it was plugged in the first place and the plug was lost. Anyways I’m rebuilding the engine and want to make everything perfect. Lmk what you think bc the plug is right next to the adjusters just like yours.
@Cruisingthesouth
@Cruisingthesouth 3 жыл бұрын
Hello my friend thank you for watching the video! If you’re talking about that rubber cap on the front middle bottom of the carburetor , That would be used on a automotive setup, if I’m not wrong that connects to the vacuum port of the transmission or something but on the marine application you don’t use that port that’s why it’s capped! But on that port you can also check your vacuum for the engine, that is probably why you have a 5 inches hose capped on it where you have that spark plug is where you connect a vacuum gauge to check the vacuum on the engine, on the very end of the video I’m checking the vacuum pretty much with the same little bit of a hose like the last owner left on your boat, nothing to worry about but that needs to be capped well so your carb don’t lose vacuum, what carburetor do you have? The carburetor number should be on the bottom front on the carb, The two marine grade ones are the 1410 and 1409, some rebuilders plug that port for the marine application because we don’t use it but the the Delbrock carburetors are pretty much the same casting just different jets and stuff so if you buy a 1409 that has that bib nothing to worry about just cap it ;-)

Would you know how to adjust the carburetor flap. With the engine off the flap stays open and doesn't close by itself. Seems to be loose and I don't know how to tighten it so that it closes when the engine is turned off.
@Cruisingthesouth
@Cruisingthesouth 25 күн бұрын
Hello my friend thank you for watching the video but the first set of butterflies is the automatic choke that opens and closes them so make sure that your choke is working properly. Of course they will only close back up when the engine is fully cold because the choke works as a heat element, when you turn the engine on, 12 V is introduced to the choke warming it up slowly and that triggers the opening effect and when you turn off the engine that will slowly close back up as the heat element cools down, but if your engine is fully cold and and the front butterflies are still open, you need to do a check on your choke assembly, make sure the wires are connected good and a little bit of WD-40 do wonders for these things, and that is assuming that your carburetor has a electric choke, but if not the same thing applies, the mechanical choke is also triggered by heat, I hope this helps. Let me know what you come up with.

Hello my friend thank you for watching the video! here’s a link of a video of mine of how I choose my carburetor there is a little math included on the video that you can calculate how much CFM do you need it’s related with your cubic inch and your top RPM, I stepped down from a 750 as I was to run to rich on a 454 but I only cruise at 3200 RPMs so you need to consider that ;-) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jpN2qNpp1cDFm6s.html

@Cruisingthesouth 3 жыл бұрын
Hey German! Could be your fuel pump failing! If it has more then 100 hours on it put a new one and as you at it take a good look of your fuel lines on the vacuum side (before the pump) for any possible air leaks also good chance to do spark plugs and wires and distributor cap and rotor for good measure lol right there you good for the season on my opinion 🙂

Just a heads up, that Edelbrock carb is not a marine model. Edelbrock makes only two models 1409/1410 and that's neither, get the right one before things go real south. Also that belt is wrong, V belts can't be back run over a pully, only a serpentine can, someone has made some nutty mods. Find a good marine mechanic and get those engines check over. And yes it dose take a expert to boat safely.
@Cruisingthesouth
@Cruisingthesouth 4 жыл бұрын
Megan Perry thank you for watching the video but no mods have been done like for starter it’s a 1406 eldelbrock carburetor on top of a mercruiser 454 so nothing is going south there and serpentine belts require serpentine setup and that’s not how mercruiser set it up on this engine on this year. go to west marine with my vin number and that’s the belt you will get. But thank you for you expertises
@Cruisingthesouth
@Cruisingthesouth 4 жыл бұрын
Megan Perry You had me questioning my parts guy really good LOL I had to look it up but yeah I stand not corrected, on the 1994 Mercruiser 7.4 L they did not use serpentine belts back then so I do have the correct belt. Just figured I would post this here in case anyone else goes through this situation to. But thank you for your input to me and I really appreciate it and I’ll most likely take your advice and upgrade my carburetors to the marine grade which I really don’t see the difference but I guess it must be one but like I said before I am not a experienced mechanic But I had boats my entire life and the point of the channel is that if I can do it anyone can do it and I’m out on the boat every weekend and because of my preventative work I never have problems out there. These Mercruiser’s engines take a lot of maintenance but if you do maintenance them they run so good for a very long time. Once again thank you my friend

@@Cruisingthesouth OK, so the edelbrock 1406 is not for marine use, it's a 600 cfm automotive only, the equivalent in marine is the 1409. On a big block I would go with a 1410, it's 750 cfm. Just looking out for the safety of you and your passengers. I think the seawater pump belt should also rout over the motor circulation pump pulley, they look to be in correct orientation, the idler pulley looks like it's from a serpentine setup. I would check with a mercury dealer and or the mercury parts web sit. Safe boating

Megan Perry Thank you for your input but without any Disrespect you must be looking at it wrong because I have the full service manual and the engine is set up to the T how it’s supposed to be.. The 1994 454 Mercruiser DID NOT have a serpentine belts. I get these engines serviced over and over again all following the service manuals this just must be a different engine that you were thinking of.. subscribe to the channel I’ll make a video of the way it’s set up and I’ll show it on the manual ;)
@caliguy1500

@@Cruisingthesouth megan is right about the carbs. The 1409 and 1410 are the only coast guard approved edelbrock carbs. They look similar to the automotive models but the marine carbs have several safety features built in, like often a return fuel line, sealed off vacume ports and corrosion resistant finish to name a few. Its certainly worth the investment. Automotive carbs can malfunction and flood, spilling fuel into your bilge and cause an explosion. Here is an brief article that really explains the differences well. www.cpperformance.com/t-carburetor_selection.aspx
