+Magneto! i don't - i laughed so hard and tought about fallout or a world where black could not use the white mans toilet. Its really hard to take this serious, but i still try.

What does a cool documentary video like this have to do with racial segregation? This is a very informative piece that mentions nothing about politics or race relations. The main thing I take away from this is the irrational exuberance over nuclear power that existed at the time, when the promise of "electricity too cheap to meter" was still alive. The outlook changed when people realized that you couldn't just slap a nuclear plant together and have it run forever without incident.

The correct name is New Idria, named after the world's 2nd largest Hg mine in Idria, Slovenia (Europe)

Great historical document-thanks for posting this. By the way: New Idria, abandoned for decades now, has recently been designated an EPA Superfund site.

Sadly, the roof of the mill has collapsed. When I went to visit the area in 2003, it was still intact.

more than likely the people there died from all of the mercury exposure . more than likely died from Lung and Kidney issues years later also immediately have brain issues lack of concentration , typical mercury exposure , today if that mine was running it would need protective gear for the workers and production buildings.

I lived on Mine Hill by 2 other retorts for a year in 2nd grade. I remember this place riding in my grandfather’s truck. Most miners I recall, lost their teeth, even the young ones. My brother and I are in our 70’s and pretty healthy, our grandmother lived up there longer and died in her mid 90’s.

@vmelkon Very few use sodium. Vast majority uses water (regular or heavy).

Mercury? They use sodium metal these days as the heat transfer in nuclear pants (but not all of them). I think water is more common.
@ShatterPalm11 жыл бұрын
mercury is a metal, dude. It's the only metal that is a liquid at STP (standard temperature and pressure). And he is right, all metals form in rock and earth in compounds, and usually need to be smelted in order to obtain the material. If you've ever seen parts of large rock formations that are a dull orange, that's from the iron that is present in the rocks rusting.
@dank38234 жыл бұрын
I was wondering why the water ways in new idria are orange or what causes that.
@mystic_tacos Жыл бұрын
What about Cesium and Gallium? They are liquid form at or near STP
