It's interesting to see this video in conjuction with your Edith Finch/Walking Sim video. There's definitely something there to be said about the cycle of tropes being subverted over and over again until you end up with pieces of media that age poorly because their subversion is not nearly as impactful as it was upon release. Either way, great video as always

There's a surprising amount of metaphor in the iconic 80s Slasher films that were overlooked at the time, and even now. A Nightmare on Elm Street is a bit more obvious: it's about puberty and sexuality. A monster who was murdered by parents who wanted to protect their children, only to come back in their teenage subconcious. There's a lot of Wes Craven's work tends to have political/religious meaning, with Elm Street mirroring the idea of the "Sins of the Father". Friday the 13th was about an mother who blames the inhibitions of the younger generation for the death of her son, despite her son having never drowned (something revealed at the end of the movie); It was a metaphor for the Reagan/Thatcher era, where anti-sex, anti-drugs and "think of the children" mentalities were used as excuses, while pushing legislature that directly impacted the social and economic viability of the next generation. Wielding the moral high-ground with all the subtlety of an axe to the face.

Love this video! I would highly recommend looking into the history behind The Conjuring and the real-life Warrens. It’s unbelievably bizarre. Depending on your point of view they’re either the paranormal Avengers or the two biggest satanic panic scam artists in history. Also the real Annabelle doll being a typically branded and mass produced Raggedy Anne doll, from an American children’s book series, really tickles me.

So glad you shared some of the most disturbing and unknown phenomenons in Cinema, including those from some of my favorite Horror films! :D I remember watching The Conjuring multiple times in the theater. It was the start of my fondness for The Conjuring universe. Same applies to Annabelle, more so its' sequels, including Annabelle Comes Home, the latter of which explored one of my favorite subplots, involving a young girl who felt guilty about what happened to her dad, something she blamed herself for. It was really touching, and the same can be said about the other horror films. Since you touched on Ju-On, or The Grudge, I HIGHLY recommend you watch other Japanese Horror films, such as Kwaidan an all-time classic Horror Anthology, Onibaba, Teke Teke 1 & 2, both of which you can watch on KZfaq, and Kuchisake-onna.

I think The Ring was the first horror movie I saw, back when Netflix mailed you a dvd instead of streaming. The horse on the boat still sticks with me. Edit: I always assumed the reason you need to copy the tape and show it to someone else was to spread knowledge about the murder. Forcing people to tell your story after you're dead, as it were.

The thing about Rachel and the ending of the Ring was most effectively explained to me through the concept of Roko's Basilisk Roko's Basilisk is a thought experiment involving a super powerful future AI that retroactively punishes anyone trying to resist or even not help it along with it's agenda of self creation and following enslavement. Once you know of the Basilisk AI you have the choice to damn yourself or serve. Sammara and the rumors of the videotape are much the same in that humans by nature are incredibly curious individuals and will damn themselves and others to see an outcome. If someone mentions the Basilisk (or in this case the videotape) to you, you are more likely to cause it to come into existence and propagate. Rachel was spared to continue warning people of the video which inevitably attracts more people to the oddity of the video, thus spreading Sammara's will

What is it about exercising that draws people towards intentionally disturbing themselves further? During my pandemic workouts I watched HBO’s Chernobyl. An episode a day for each day’s workouts, for about 4 weeks until I was buff af and could recite each episode from memory. Then I took up baking and stopped being buff, but can still mostly recite HBO’s Chernobyl. Cool vid, as ever, though. I’ve watched the video too that features the Tiers of the iceberg, although I think there’s quite a few films not on there that should be, although they’re more so the ones that focus on the disturbing elements of fact and not fiction - Threads and Come and See in particular. Haven’t been able to get Threads out of mind since Ukraine started, and Come and See’s final hour lives rent free in my head.

Hi! :) Respectfully, I don't think saying that Scream isn't horror is pretty fair. Horror doesnt need to be all disturbing or supernatural. Scream has a group of people being murdered one by one by a certain number of people. The definition of a slasher and thus horror. You see endless of horror content creators covering the Scream franchise cuz it's indeed horror! Also to another point you made about swapping esentially most of the Tier 1 movies with others. I would agree if this would be a disturbing horror movies iceberg but it is a general disturbing movie iceberg. So I pretty much understand the decision to include these movies! As for a genre-less perspective it would make sense to put the "soft/easy" horror movies in Tier 1 as for a person who has no connection with horror whatsoever might see them as a bit disturbing. Hope I got my points across understandably! Have a nice day :)

My solution is to watch action visual media. So I have my exercise bike infront of a tv and watch anime like AoT, Psycho Pass, Jujutsu Kaisen, or some other live action flim/tv media that is fast paced/stimulating. Before that, I absolutely related to cardio similar to you, but now I really enjoy it, because I look forward to watching whatever shower I am currently on. Though funnily enough, I did my weight workout today while listening to this video on my phone. But I watched Season 2 Episode 6 of Jujutsu Kaisen while I did my warm-up cardio on my bike. The time flies by instead of dragging (thankfully).

My friend and I watched it and began a wonderful hypothetical that Loraine and the mom were going to elope and take the kids leaving the men to deal with the demon or whatever 😂 It certainly made watching it far more amusing on our end. Im not a fan of jumpscare horror and ive been desensitized to it and that movie felt like it relied a bit too much on them. Im not really a fan of ghost films. Scream is my favorite film on this tier though, i could talk abt it for hours

Love your deep dives, and yes, I AM commenting a whole year after this was uploaded. 😅 Sorry..! I’m curious, have you ever watched the original Ring (the Japanese one)? Maybe I’m biased, but the original one was steeped in a feeling of history and pervading eeriness that still scares me. It makes me think of Junji Ito! Even the name “Sadako” is scary in comparison to the adorable “Samara”. The unwitting people the desperate mother is planning on giving the copy to at the end are her child’s GRANDPARENTS if I remember correctly, way more horrifying than the American one. There’s also the very real gloominess of certain parts of Japan, the creepy little son who was scary vs. the American sad and overly competent one, the reality that you can indeed easily stumble upon terrifying wells in inexplicable places in the woods in Japan (maybe that was just me)…. If you haven’t, I recommend it! Could be interesting to see cultural differences at the very least! Thank you for your videos!

Would you have really wanted to see Pam Voorhees X in Space? She stares through a shuttle window, taps on the glass, gives the astronauts some scary eyes and then Jason teleports behind them. Edit. Roku is a must for this kind of content if it's available in UK

A pretty good horror movie was the Wailing. I also personally liked The Void.

The issue with Sidney's mom wasn't necessarily that she was sexually active but that she was fairly openly cheating on her husband with multiple men. Thus, outside of the 'appropriate' way of having sex, especially in a small town. Part of the reason Sidney So viciously insists that Cotton Weary is guilty is that she needs it to be true because she needs her mother to remain the innocent victim. If Sidney starts doubting that Cotton killed her mother, that means that she must accept that her mother was sleeping with Cotton willingly. And since most people, myself included, see people who cheat on their spouses as fairly despicable or, at the very least, as the act itself is wrong, it would mean Sidney would have to accept that her mother might have been a bad person.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that hates running on a treadmill but enjoys running outside. It's just so boring
