I think it was Brad the Guitologist that was raising hell about the stupidity of Mesa's "purely aesthetic" heatsink and pointing out all of the ways the cost of a useless heatsink could be better spent on things that would actually improve the amp. 😅

That amp has the tone of a Pentawatt chip amp Dean Markley that I paid $3 for at a yard sale. I am running expensive headphones through a DBX expander and a home made headphone amp made with Bendix power tubes. Wow the reverb sounds like a shitty old Super Cube or Hyper Cube from the early 1980s. The reverb mod probably IS a Super Cube mod. You basically bypass the tank, install a resistor in it's place and let the reverb driver & remix make really shitty distortion sounds. Bendix 6094s, just for them who care. 6094s are basically just super ultra extra heavy duty 6AQ5s. They are noticeably MUCH heavier too. No mica spacers in those bad boys. Ceramic spacers. Heavier glass too. Missile tubes.

I have nearly a case of 6005/6AQ5WA tubes, but I've only heard-tell about the Bendix "special red" line of tubes (from Red Bank, New Jersey) and have never actually seen one on the flesh. Yours sound like real beasts!

6aq5 eh? Had an old Univox amp that used a set of those. I didn't know about the heavy duty version. I built an amp that used 7189s once which is a bit of a heavier duty 6bq5 otherwise known as the el84

@@michaelknight4041 , a few Magnatone amps used 7189's as well. The A version, 7189A, has uprated power handling and a different pin-out than the 7189 and EL84; Amplifiers that run at excessive voltages often had the tube sockets wired specifically in such a way that only the 7189 would pass signal and therefore you couldn't merely sub an EL84 or 7189 and have it blow up in spectacular fashion.

Great video, this will be a useful reference for me when I finally dig into my Mark III. Shouldn't there be two more filter caps mounted on the bottom of the power supply board? My red stripe has four, which is why there's a second set of holes.

Only the "Simul-class" version has 4 x 220uf 350v reservoir caps. The other versions have 2, such as this one.

Treble shift only works on the Lead channel (or mode or whatever you want to call it).

Wow just wow. I would have just gutted it and put a headfirst board there. The graphic eq was the only thing that sounded like it really affected tone. Why have parametric tone and graphic eq? Also amazed at lack of swearing at this thing. At my company we say the cheaper the office gets the more money the field guys make.
