You can't just say they competed at the same level when they were above everyone else. Even at the top, there is still a significant difference. Truly great players such as Zidane, Cruyff or Messi are able to not only perform well through excellent athletics, but they also have this insane talent to play football creatively, skillfull and intelligently. They have an alien-like vision and capability to read the game and its players in such a way they can influence a game immensely with just a simple pass, lob or whatever crazy balls they can shoot. Ronaldo only perfomed well through excellent athletics and training. He might have had superior athletics compared to Zidane and Messi, but they are better than Ronaldo on so so many other levels. Also it is highly likely Messi will end up with more relevant records than Ronaldo. But in the end, don't read about the qualitative and quantitative arguments. Just watch both players play very closely. Not only with themselves and their goals, but also how they play with their team in correspondence to the overall team strategy/tactics. Then, you'll see the huge difference between Messi and Ronaldo: Messi is an excellent analyst, visionair, orchestrator/playmaker and goal scorer. Ronaldo is just a goal scorer. Great point about recency bias. I also think Messi is the best ever, and I thought about putting Pele and Maradona above Ronaldo probably because of that recency bias. We shouldn't forget that he won several Ballon'o'dors even when Messi was playing some of his best football. Almost nobody else has done that, and not multiple times. I totally respect what Ronaldo has achieved as a player. To be fair, Pele is really underrated in my opinion, he was a genius entertainer and invented so many skills decades ahead of when they would be popular and effectively used. He won the world cup three times for crying out loud, first as a teenager! I think he's at least in the fight for 2nd ever. It's just tough for me to root for Ronaldo when it didn't seem like he has to leave Europe. He still has a pretty good first half of a season with united and could have moved to a smaller premier league club or even to France or somewhere else. It just seems that he left for money and not for passion to me. Just look at his contract and tell me that didn't influence his decision. Things need to be said the way they really are. I think you're overall right, that they clearly are the two greats, etc. However, I would like to point out that Ronaldo does control when he retires. He could have simply accepted that he was not performing as well due to his age, accepted it with more grace, and not caused such a ridiculous falling out as he did.

The villainization and of CR7 lately, it is regrettable. Recent Saintification of Messi, rather exaggerated. Part was because CR7 is too vocal about his thoughts. The pressure on him was immense. I mediate in cross cultural communication challenges and my love runs a social media agency. Even though it’s different, we both look into behavioral science, psychology, group dynamics. In this day and age 2022/23, we have to factor in social media impact. If I take a case e.g. team with challenges. Analyzing variables that impact. CR7 is actually correct when he expresses that he needs support, sort of team protection, because his social media presence is huge. They did that excellently with Messi. You just cannot simply think that away and not be strategic together with CR7 about it also. Now, CR7 is a football player, not behavioral scientist nor specialized in communication. So he has historically not been “careful” or weighed his words. Clearly not CR7’s strongest point, a vulnerability for sure. M10 is portrayed more like a saint. Yet e.g. M10 has more passive aggressive tendencies when unhappy. His negativity is less obvious but he of course is not saint. He tends to be more secretive of his thoughts, mindset, a classic observer. CR7 is has honed his technical talent excellently clearly more explosive in his personality, play and strikes. It is this same passion that is his power. Very different players and people. CR7 is more prone to outbursts if he feels unsafe or not carried by team. As a coach, you have to know your player and especially a star player. If not? The cracks occur very soon because Media pressure on such a star is massive. Ferguson had the status, the weight and vast experience already. Ten Hag is still less experienced and dealing with a CR7 with an incredible following, is extremely unique and requires awareness from any coach. He is the most followed person in the world. The public punishing to show your “weight” over a person who has such a following is extremely stupid actually. Very unstrategic. I don’t think an average Joe like us, can even know what it’s like to be constantly provoked. It’s a pity that CR7 took the bait. Another variable is that CR7 is more than average goodlooking i.e. fairly attractive. (So he is correct in mentioning it, probably because he simply senses it, but it’s not smart to mention it) M10 is lookswise average. He attracts less envy. CR7 had an alcoholic war veteran dad who was often too intoxicated to connect properly with him. They were poor and had no money, hunger. CR7 had a heart surgery at 15 which was lonely, risky and scary. His positive self talk is clearly a manner to comfort himself without anyone there. It’s part of what made him beat the odds, overcome his loneliness and become successful. We know from studies that positive self talk works, but to beat the odds like this? It’s actually literally mindblowing. Boys without a father or alcoholic, often don’t to well and have higher chance to fail in life and become e.g. petty thief/ criminal. CR7 is the most generous football player when it comes to charity. He never forgot where he came from. He regularly donates blood. He had thoughts about adopting poor children, yet his focus is not that now. So, do I think M10 is a better human? Not exactly. He is a good guy, but is less ‘generous’ with sharing his thoughts, life, mindset, money and has no interest in donating blood. M10 donates, but is more “careful” and thus less of a giver in another way. Now, M10 is very talented. Even when a bit chubby, he was good. A CR7 is very talented, he was open about that he had to hone skills through dedication, training, positive mindset. It wasn’t actually “given” to him. So he is more relatable in that respect than a M10. CR7 is less relatable because he shares his rare winner’s mindset out loud, while the other doesn’t. So to villainize CR7 so much? Killing his career in Europe while he still has the dedication to inspire ? Makes me sad. Al Nassr wasn’t his original plan. It was the only “decent” respectable offer and choice left after all the backlash. The money eases some pain. With a type like CR7, the envy and misunderstandings make people tend to “test” his strength to the extremes. It’s often subconscious. Yet at the end of the day, it’s just a man. He needs team support to perform, like any other player. He could die like any man and his career in Europe could die prematurely too due to the villainization. Nobody is invincible and both need a positive team and team coach, lonely positive self talk is never bullet proof. I don’t think CR7 nor Messi is “just” about the money. Sometimes extreme villainization of one can lead to a premature death in their European career. There were years that Messi was wrongly villainized, but he had the time to comeback because of his age, he almost gave up and CR7 doesn’t because the exteme villainization happened near the end of his career while he wanted more care after death of his child and almost death of his baby daughter in the same year. Wish MU well, but CR7 did a lot for them winning and scoring. It’s just feels off how it went and the lack of understanding. I miss m in Europe. Hated/loved… never ignored.

Whenever I see someone starting a comment with "I'm a Messi fan but we shouldn't compare him and CR7, both are great" I instantly know it's a CR7 fan in disguise. Anyone who watched Messi for more than a few games knows he is miles better, they'd never think of CR7 as an equal to Messi. Yeah, we can appreciate both, but one of them is not like the other.

Ronaldo is simply unbelievable.. everything he's done and brought for the game will probably never be challenged and we get distracted from that imo because Messi is out of this world, he is the best dribbler ever, the most creative footballer you'll ever see paired with those once in a lifetime ball skills, at least top5 passers of all time & on top of that, beats ronaldo in his own yard - on every scoring aspect besides penalties & headers, like not even close. Stats aside, the mentioned creativity and ability to influence games without scoring or being a threat in the penalty box, paired with the awards & trophies clearly put him in a different universe & as I said, the only bad thing is that there are delusional people who question that fact & make it seem like there is a debate, which again takes away from Ronaldo's unbelievable career imo & is probably the one thing a lover of football will be discouraged by because Ronaldo can't accept it himself and acts arrogant as a result If you truly love & understand football, you'll understand that the things that Messi does cannot be imitated by another human - make that stand on its own for a sec... and then look at his contribution and the beating stats and for the love of artistry, beauty and science in life & everything we've evolved to become, call it a wrap once and for all. The last time Ronaldo was better than Messi was the 2007-08 season. All his other ballon do'rs have been courtesy his PR and papa Perez's influence. His goalscoring is at par with Messi but in other aspects of the game, he is miles behind Messi.

Messi won, I respected Ronaldo all the way until he sold himself to the Saudis, even though he could have made lots of money in Sporting and ended his career playing champions league football. The issue was not moving to a lower league, but to a country that has such a horrible reputation where football is just a sport that exist to pleasure this super ultra rich people that do a lot of questionable things who treat foreigners far worse than any western country could, even worse than a country like Russia. Playing back in your home country is a respectable thing to do, and the Brazilian, and Argentinian leagues are far more competitive and respectable, with true fans who have a football culture. So the rational bring presented here is d*mb, for players like maradona, Although, as a human being, if ai got paid like 4x my wage to work part time, surrounded by mediocre workers who had no desire to improve and I could just chill. Sure, why not. But as a football fan, he just broke my heart and the little boy who followed his games on manchester every weekend. But that's life. There are no real heroes.

Ronaldo became a pure finishing machine but more vulnerable to age impacting his strengths ie pace, leap, and at the elite level, stamina. To keep to the level he has until 36/37 is phenomenal but Father Time catches up with anybody. I think he’s going to tank badly towards the end of his Saudi deal. Messi is not so one-dimensional and has adapted as a playmaker as his pace has diminished but I think he has at the very best only two seasons left at an elite level, maybe just one more.

Look I don’t wanna get attacked here I’ll just say my opinion. I’ve loved football since I was 3 years old when my dad introduced me to it but I think that besides Ronaldo’s amazing prime at united and his good times at Real Madrid there never should’ve been a debate for me Messi has always been so far of everyone and his playing style doesn’t get affected with age nearly as much as Ronaldo. Pelé is one of the greatest and any skill you see, pele did it first but Messi is the closest to perfect a footballer can get. He has amazing body strength, amazing vision, amazing shooting, amazing team player, amazing dribbling, good speed an amazing and humble person as Benzema said “if you criticize Messi yk nothing about football” and as Ronaldinho said to Kobe that Messi will be the best ever when he was only 19. Messi’s only weak point is his height for headers but Ronaldo did stuff that a lot of people did only much better but Messi did stuff that nobody has ever seen except maybe for pelé and maradona but they didn’t do it for as long as Messi has been doing it so in my opinion Messi is the greatest of all time. Sure Ronaldo’s 2 years older but people have to realize that Messi is the god of football and even in 2 years messi will be the same he is right now and no matter how much Ronaldo works out he can’t get his young self back unlike Messi who’s always been the same and Messi didn’t even need a World Cup to prove he’s the best but I’m so happy he won

There is no GOAT. football is a team game, and players do well depending on who your teammates are. As well as this, these rankings seem to be very biased towards attackers, and not midfielders and defenders, and especially goalies. To me, you can't compare 2 players because of these factors changing how they play, you can try to compare them, but players have different teammates, making it complicated.

I really don’t know why Ronaldo is in this discussion. Yes he scored a lot of goals but most of times the man was standing in the 16m field waiting for others do all the job. He is only a finisher. No play making, tbh his driblings are not so succesful, no much contribution. He is more to be compared to Zlatan or Lewa. Messi is at completely different league. His own league levels above. Messi is so spectacular in his driblings playmakings, passings, scorings. No way ronaldo can be at the same level as Messi

Nothing more, nothing less. Messi is the better striker, playmaker, makes better passes, much better dribbler, has a much better accuracy with lesser shots per goal, more work rate, more key chances created and what not. Messi is an attacking powerhouse - the master of almost all trades in attacking football. He is technically much better than anyone who came before him and will remain ahead for a long time to come. The only thing missing was the WC, because without that award, you aren't qualified for the G.O.A.T. debate. That is the standard set forward by most of those critical of him. And he met the standard and proved himself the greatest. No comparison with the past, present or future.
