@@RB3Vids I think it was for the fact that it was his most conceptually abstract album. That and I can't help but shake the idea that DAMN. was awarded the prize as a kind of "well we should've given it to TPAB but we didn't have the balls so well give it to DAMN." Situation.

@@Boog1137 I don't know man , Damn is Kendrick on his element , what I mean by that is when u listen to good kid , to pimp , there's alot of influences and u can hear in his rhymes , in damn it's all him that's Kendrick . The message in damn to me is more important cause like he says on lust a friend of the world is a enemy if the Lord , there is no changing the world till to pimp he had that mentality of I can change the world , in damn his changing him looking in the mirror which is something we should do .

Matt Lesner The givers of the Pulitzer said it wasn’t specifically for Damn., that it was more of a prize to commend and award Kendrick for his past accomplishments and pieces of music. It’s just that they hadn’t gotten around to giving the Pulitzer to him after TPAB.

Duckworth is a real story. The “guy working the window” at the chicken restaurant was his dad and “Anthony, the guy robbing the place” is his manager. They met back then and ended up meeting in the future, in the studio like kendrick said. It’s a really amazing track. Imo to pimp a butterfly should be next. It’s an instant classic. Great video!

The last line of FEAR is one of my favorite all time lyrics. "Wondering if I'm living through fear or through rap". Very simple, but very deep in context with much of his work. He's contemplating the religious/philosophical concept of self itself. He's asking himself who he is and recognizes that there are different perfectly accurate characterizations of who a human being actually is (well really there are 3 traditionally but he references the main 2). Is he the man? The one who walks through day to day life in the present moment; who's lived in constant fear of his environment throughout his life? Or is he really something more like his soul? The legacy, the immortal self left behind by his art, his rap, the braggadocios lyrics and the violence and the emotions and words and themes in his music which will last and influence people long after he's gone. It's ultimately not clear which of these is more "real" (which is actually the exact point of contention between many religious and non-religious philosophical thinkers). In some literal way his legacy is a more "real" version of himself than the very self he embodies in day to day life. And so this song acts as sort of a question to the listener, at least how I interpret it. Which is more important to you? Your self now? Or your self later? What sacrifices or investments are you willing to make with your present self and body to achieve immortality? And sacrifice is a very old religious concept. It's the very notion that giving up something today may be worthwhile for the future. It's the fundamental question of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ sacrificed himself such that his legacy and words of wisdom, even if you aren't religious like myself, spread around the world for thousands of years. Kendrick in all three albums has deeply embedded religious concepts and treats his rap as a true art of expression and valuable communicative tool of philosophical concepts rather than just making songs to sing along with. He's not just writing albums, he's out here writing academic thesis papers and mythological epics centered around cutting edge philosophical and religious themes. He's kind of doing exactly what ancient people did when they wrote mythological texts, or what Tolkien did, but with a completely different medium. And all the while the dudes making absolute fucking banger's musically. Man's a genius.
@xavvi
@xavvi 5 жыл бұрын
Kendrick is a street reporter/poet/wordsmith. That final track was the story about a man named Anthony, also known as Top Dog, who created Top Dog Entertainment (TDE) and recruited a young Kendrick to became a rapper on his label. Only later did Top realize that Kendrick's dad was a guy who was once a goofy kid named Ducky (short for their family name Duckworth) whom Top decided not to kill when robbing a chicken joint a decade or more earlier. Had he killed Ducky, Kendrick would have grown up without a father and his decisions would have taken him down a completely different path. This album can be interpreted a million different ways but one way is to think that maybe it's all the final thoughts and emotions that go through someone's head as they're dying, and that final moment is bringing it back to right before he gets shot as if to say if you just make one itty bitty slightly different choice in life, just one thing, you might alter your entire destiny for better or worse.

Now you gotta check out TPAB. Musically I think it's a masterpiece, and if you really wanna go down the rabbit hole with feels and lyrics, that's the GOAT. But it's a polarizing album, you either hate it or love it. I just feel like those who hate it do so musically because the album has an unusual sound for modern hip-hop, it's a throwback to jazz and blues. Also, the first 2 tracks on the album are probably some of the jazzier pieces and it might scare some listeners off for the rest of the album.
