I absolutely love the fusion of children's music with intense metal drumming. It's both creative, and absolutely hilarious. And seriously, whoever that is in the suit has some real chops.

@@28naveenator27van there's never been real confirmation on who is behind it, though there's been lots of suggestions it may be the drummer from the Japanese metal band Maximum The Hormone though.

Nyango Star, a portmanteau of Nyan ("meow") and Ringo ("apple") and is a pun of Ringo Starr. I believe the lore is that he's the ghost of a cat inhabiting an apple, which is awesome, and is the mascot of Aomori, which is known for it's apples. And, yeah, the person is a legend for playing drums in that suit in the humid Japanese spring and summer. There is some speculation that a female metal drummer is the one in the suit.

What is interesting: Nyango plays in lots of places in Japan and even outside of Japan sometimes and does not bring it's own drumset, so it's playing a different set of drums each time. But it's meticulously set up to be in the exact same place.

The drummer had probably been playing this song normally for about 6 hours straight and was on the final 5 minutes and just thought 'fuck this, gotta blast!'. Never gets old.

The real story is the person under the costume is a professional metal drummer and has toured with several bands. She did this as a way to promote tourism to her hometown and encourage people to buy apples from there. The Kayfabe reason is the ghost of a cat possessed a local apple and now plays drums for kids to make sure they get enough fruit in their diet.

It’s nyango star, I go to Japan every couple of years and missed him at a con by one day, absolute hero. It’s actually a cute story, he is the mascot for his home town which it’s main export is apples. He also has a mascot band and has played with maximum the hormone on some videos. I thought it was maximum the hormones drummer for a long time but that has been proven wrong

Nyango Star ('nyan' = basically 'meow' and 'ringo' = 'apple' in japanese + Ringo Starr)... A dead cat possessing an apple and using their legendary drumming power to honor and promote a small town in Aomori, Japan, that are known for their apple produce. That town's apples have thus become hugely popular. Legend has it that Nyango Star's drumming skills are borrowed from Kawakita Nao. She's the drummer of Japanese nu metal punk band "Maximum the Hormone". What an absolute delight.

I just love that it is along THE classic kids song, a theme from a kids cartoon, is what she's fully at it. Mind you, I think it is the highest grossing franchise in the world or something like that. It's been around for like 30-40 yrs. Kind of feel proud that my childhood is shared with the world 😂

Saw a comment in there: "fortunately japanese people don't sweat". I'm inclined to believe it when seeing the kind of insane feats they perform. As someone who's trudged around in this kind of costume, I can attest to the heat build-up on even a cloudy day. What this mascot's doing seems 10 times more exhaustive. Mad props.

People, it ISN'T Nao Kawakita from MTH. That one video people base this on, she was standing behind the camera cheering Nyango on, not IN the suit playing. Nyango's identity has been a mystery for years, why would Nao suddenly start shouting and playing with her own band in the costume? It's never been confirmed, because it isn't true. Their 2 drumming styles aren't even remotely similar.

I'm assuming it's a bit like Top Gear's Stig, where it's a costumed character and the actual person inside could be anyone from a handful of extremely good drummers depending on scheduling and location.

So this happens at a Japanese theme park. Think something somewhat akin to Chuck E Cheese meets Disney Land. The park was struggling with attendance and on its way to closing its gates for good when this clip went viral. The drummer's stunt had become somewhat standard fare so the staff were not at all surprised to see it happen but being exposed to the internet got a lot of people interested in the park. Ticket sales increased and the drummer wound up getting an entire band that does shows in the park akin to the same metal style for the kids. Nyango Star is the character's name and who the park is themed after.
