I’ve seen those earth couplers in stations and train depots where the conduit needs periodic equipotential bonding when within areas containing 25kV OHLE.

I've used earth couplers here in the states for connecting equipment grounding conductors on radio equipment, e.g. antenna aerials, lighting arrestors for N connector coax, cat5/cat6, etc. They're also used for bonding conduit sections that are at risk for a direct lightning strike (e.g. up an antenna mast) to an external lighting protection ground conductor. Due to the simply _massive_ fault currents that occur during a direct lightning strike, all that parallel length that the normal mains protective earth conductor has with the other conductors can be more than enough to inductively couple a damaging amount of energy onto the other conductors -- more than enough to damage the sorts of sensitive radio equipment that one installs in locations like that. Therefore at-risk conduit actually needs to be kept isolated from the mains ground conductor and instead gets bonded to this external lighting protection earth, so that direct strike current remains outside the conduit. That way the metal walls act as something of a faraday cage for the conductors inside (on top of the belt-and-braces screened cable you also run in those applications).

Used to use the flange couplings on hospital jobs and the adjustable dome hangers . They usual specifying there use ..and come across the earthing coupling on kopex to motors 👍👍

Earth coupler ideal for bonding conduit to other items such as airlines or any other nearby services . Just needs a safety electrical connection label.

I very rarely use metal conduit but some of these not so common items are not easy to source . Hence I keep a few odd items just in case. I couldn’t get 3/4 to 20mm adaptors off the shelf from my wholesaler a few months back .(sorry we don’t and can’t get them ) lucky for me I found some in my odds and end box. I got boxes of imperial stuff I saved ,again just in case

I do remember using Tallow, not the best smelling stuff; but it worked. I think you sources just about every conduit accessory there guys. Good to see them all again. Thanks for sharing.

This is a great series, answering all the questions. Any chance of looking at all the different type of girder clips and when to use them? Continuing on the industrial electrical theme

Never seen or used the eyeball or earth one's before. Haven't done a new metal conduit/trunking install for 25 ish years. Loved it though.

Never used an earth coupler or ball and socket box before ... but that ball and socket box would have been handy on a few jobs i've done ...i still use a steel spirado rather than those plastic fish reels, really good content lads

More or less superceded by Jack chain and hook plates .

Have used the earthed couplers when the conduit was the earth /cpc and it changed to a flexible , additional green/yellow cable tied to the outside to continue the return path . Normally got damaged or corroded so not a great idea .

If I had a right angle box and I wanted to go out the back of it, how would I go about it? Is it as simple as putting a hole in it, then using a bush and coupler?

Just wondering the flanged couplers they have a lead washer , is the lead washer on the outside with coupler or inside with brass bush ? Many thanks in advance
@impactvision

the washer goes on the outside to mate between the flange of the coupler and equipment.

Earthing couplers could be useful for equipotential bonding, when the conduit system is an extraneous conductive part, rather than an exposed conductive part, in extra low voltage, or data installations.
