I lived in a community that had similar ordinances. After a few years of ruining coins and artifacts with a probe, I decided to get the ordinance changed. I had a friend take a video of me probing the ground to recover a target at 4" and another by digging a target at 6" using a typical hand digger. It was obvious to even the most casual observer that it was next to impossible to see where I cut the plug, then replaced the soil as opposed to the damage caused by digging with a probe. The city council changed the ordinance that very evening.

Dude, it just takes confidence and a true desire to make a meaningful change. If you want some practice before taking action with a local government I I recommend practicing on people you already know who have different perspectives on political matters than you. Seriously, preparing to disarm and convince people you already know who possess a different perspective than you on - more timely - political matters will give you (at least) 2 huge benefits: confidence (or things things to improve should you struggle with this) and some experience in defending something you're passionate about. Having been personally involved in local government several years ago I can say this - local officials are very rarely concerned with the impact(s) of highly-specific issues. These positions are highly-unlikely to pay well, so the value of satiating someone who presents a constant source of stress regarding a fairly nuanced rule can often outweigh any ideological stand local government officials might hold. You simply need to be persistent (it may take a year or more, but eventually these people will fold).

I'm glad we don't have the limitation of a probe or screwdriver only. That would take a lot of patience getting a good deeper target out. Thanks for the demonstration. HAPPY BIRTHDAY! I hope you had the best day ever!

Yeah, I heard the reason why the ordinance was originally made was to remove metal detectorists from public parks, not because they thought were were damaging the ground, but because we were looked down upon like the homeless. Yea it's messed up.

I love how you use VR to show the spot. We're allowed to dig but I'm old and I like to carry as little as possible, so I've been practicing with the probe. I set my Equinox to sensitivity 5 and set my pinpointer to one so that I'm not seeing anything that I can't reach. My first find on my first trip with the probe was a ring, followed by a 95 cent coin spill. It definitely teaches you to be super accurate with the equipment.

Hi Klesh.. I have been using that brass prob for years..with a thick rod screwdriver..! You use the brass prob to locate the object..!!! Don’t use the brass prob to dig out..!! As you showed it will bend..! Only use the screwdriver the flat end is great ...! Then place the brass prob handle to help for leverage..for the Screwdriver. Then you use the solid shaft screwdriver to pop out the object. As we also aren’t allowed to use a shovel or digging implements in certain parks here. I am posting a video soon on how I use one.. Thanks for sharing.

In The 70's in NY that is all we were allowed to use was screwdriver and a probe over the years they stopped enforcing it and finally allowed Small shovels because it actually helps from damaging the turf quicker and heals better as long as you leave it hinged.

Yeah the probe (or especially a screwdriver) will tear the ground up way worse then a digging knife or small shovel, if used correctly making nice plugs.

Hey Klesh, when I get a deeper target like you have at the 5:30 part of your video. 1. I like to locate the target pushing straight down. 2. Then instead of getting under the target I will go above the target and pry up making a little slit above the target. 3. Then I will go under the target and pry up, I find that this will also not bend your probe as much. Another little tidbit, even though the probe is brass it will scratch. The more times the probe is punched into the ground the sharper it gets. I also shop at Gold-N-Dector from time to time. HH, herm

Typical governmental bureaucrats....some of the ground you were on looked as if a backhoe couldn’t damage that dirt! I was metal detecting in one of my local parks when a cop walked up to me asking what I was doing. Told him I was metal detecting and asked why was he asking. He said a person had called the station saying someone was making holes in the park. I demonstrated what I was doing by digging plugs. He then said how would I like it if someone went in my back yard digging plugs. I wanted to tell him that the 7,000 bucks I pay each year in property tax pretty much made the Park my back yard but decided just pack up and leave. I wrote a letter to the city attorney asking about metal detecting in OUR parks and was it legal. One month later receive a letter from her stating that there were no laws preventing metal detecting in the public parks as long as there was no damage to the grass. I carry that letter with me now. Bottom line....they work for us...time to change that ridiculous ordinance. BTW...love your vids!

I would've said that to him, even if it wouldn't have helped your argument. I would have also left, but definitely would say that I pay tax and it's my backyard. Thanks for the comment I enjoyed it, it's pretty ridiculous how these ordinances are. ATB -KG

i just got a beginner metal detector so im sure ill be watching more of your videos. Im curious why you purchased a dirt probe which much weaker than, but is otherwise pretty much exactly like a cross-head screwdriver. I think i would use any screw driver over a brass probe since it basically the same thing but much stronger. I was actually thinking about probing a few days ago because it occurred to me some cities wouldnt allow digging, i was thinking what shape the probe would need to be to be able easily snag on most jewelry, coins and other metallic objects that might be in odd positions. A straight pointed prob like that may make it hard to feel the object your looking for, if a coin is on its side you may just deflect off of it numerous time and miss it, a ring you might do the same, a necklace you might poke right through the chain and break it and might not feel it at all down there so you could miss that as well. So i was thinking of a flat-head screw driver might be the better option - should go through the dirt pretty easily and will have a better chance to snag on coins, rings, and even necklaces in a way that you will more likely feel it down there.
@Klesh

The brass probe is better since it won't damage the coins as you're probing. A screwdriver is guaranteed to damage your find. Hope this info helps!

I think it's important that all detectorists are familiar with the probe method. I typically will use it whether it's required or not just to minimize any potential damage. However, I think Denver Parks & Rec need to get on the same page. When I inquired about it with them in the past I was told that although they prefer the probe method the use of a trowel type digger with a width of 3 inches or less was also acceptable. Hmmm....

That's interesting and worth following up with. I have contacted the superintendent of the Aurora Parks and Recreation, he basically gave me full permission to detect any park in Aurora, and if the cops messed with me, he said give them his phone number! I guess a call to denver parks and rec wouldn't hurt. Thanks for the suggestion. atb -KG

I pretty much received the same response from South Suburban Parks & Recreation that Aurora gave you. If you'd like to hunt their parks, they have a ton of them, I'd be happy to forward you the e-mail I received from them giving the ok to do so so that you have documentation in the event that you are contacted by police/park rangers.

What you need along with the probe is a screwdriver with the tip bent 90 degrees a hook about 1/2 inch I have written article in lost treasure magazines describing it heat the tip cherry red of the screwdriver to remove the temper out as not break your screwdriver when doing this thanks bill

Digging up the ground is good for the soil especially in parks where the soil is compacted from foot traffic. You've always replaced the plug and soil so it was undetectable that you had even dug it up. This ordenance is counterproductive

That must be quite a frustrating way of having to retrieve find's I think I'd make my own with a square section black steel (high carbon) shaft tapering from 1/2" down to 1/4" to avoid it bending and fit it with a sleeved tip made out of a medium density Polyurethane to avoid damaging anything of value. If I can get in my workshop soon I'll see if I can knock something up for you, currently recovering from broken wrists and fingers so fine metal work is impossible, not in casts anymore but have to spend hours everyday loosing them up, basically home physio.

Carry two tools. The probe and a flat head screwdriver about 10 inches in length. Don't use the brass probe to "dig" the object. Use the probe to find the object and then use a flat head screwdriver to pop the object out. Thus either way you are only using screwdriver type tools.
