"NO METAL DETECTING!" Our hobby is being attacked, little by little, nationwide. With increasingly more municipalities placing signs like these, it is becoming much more important to avoid the damage caused by digging a plug to retrieve your target.

Wow! I did not know about this! This is going to help me out so much. I've probably only started metal detecting for just over a month. Thank you very much sir, this is not only going to save time & energy, but it'll also help me with keeping the area clean. 👏🏻

Your video is still being looked at and still valuable. I'm a new detector and had learned to dig a plug but happened on a note that someone was only "popping things out with a screwdriver" because he was in parks. So I went looking to find out how to do that, and found this video. So now I know. Thanks!

Thanks for sharing your technique. I'm working on using the probe just because I don't like to carry a bunch of equipment.

Bravo! I've checked out at least a dozen videos on coin popping and yours is the only one that suggests making the slit before popping the coin. Makes a huge difference. Thank you for the great suggestion.

Thank you very much for making this video. I've wanted to hunt parks and similar grounds but didn't want to tearing up and digging plugs for every hit. Make another that shows what you do for deeper targets, please.

Hi Mike. Of course, I don't dig deeper targets in areas like the one in this video, but when I'm in other areas where I am likely to find good, deep targets, I will cut a deep plug and leave it attached on one side, remove the target, and then replace the plug. Leaving a portion of the plug attached will allow the sod to more easily recover and the plug cannot as easily come back out of the ground. There are already a number of good KZfaq videos on this method of plugging. Check 'em out. Thanks for watching!

Absolutely great video. I live in Pennsylvania and although we are allowed permits to hunt in state parks this is the only retrieval option. Thank you for a wonderful instructional video.

You may not damage the sod but probing even with a brass probe you can damage coins I know because i scratched the oldest silver coin I ever found that way! A coin about 2" deep in almost mint shape until the half inch scratch! I wasnt expecting a mid 1800 coin only 2" deep! I

thanks for the tip. not sure how it would work with old silver coins down 8+ inches. but modern coins or recently dropped jewelry may work. most things I find are 6+ inches but state parks allow no shovels. thanks again.

ok I commented before the very end. you're correct.

Yeah, it is not a technique you would want to use to retrieve deep or valuable coins, but if you are just out there looking to fill your coin pouch with lots of coins, it is quick, effective and easy on the turf.

I use the probe & forceps (hemostat ) method. I’ve seen too many people cut huge plugs for some coin an inch down.

Does this work on really rocky soil?
@coloradosearcher8673
@coloradosearcher8673 3 жыл бұрын
It is much more difficult in Rocky soil, but with practice you'll get to where you can tell the difference between the way a rock and a coin feel under the tip of your screwdriver.

Good idea, thanks. In my town metal detecting is allowed in our parks, but digging isn't. I might be able to get away with your technique. And it makes sense. Why rip up the nice sod that my tax payer money paid for?

no rings
@coloradosearcher8673
@coloradosearcher8673 Жыл бұрын
This method works on rings as well as coins, and I have found many rings using this method. There is a definite 'slippery' feel to a ring when you come in contact with it on the tip of your probe. You'll feel the probe slip off the edge of the ring rather than having it stay in solid contact, and when this occurs multiple times, you can almost guarantee that you have a ring. Then, with careful probing, you can determine the location of the center of the ring and then lift it out with your probe.

What's is more important -not to damage valuable coins and relics by using the screwdriver The grass will always grown back specily when plugs get back to the same place Happy hunting everybody
@sadhvacman7238
@sadhvacman7238 5 жыл бұрын
True. But at a park hunting shallow worthless clad, there’s no need to dig a plug, as the likelyhood of finding an old deep coin is slim. Plugs are necessary when your chasing older deep targets.
@coloradosearcher8673
@coloradosearcher8673 4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! Digging a plug for a shallow target is just thoughtless, unnecessary and a threat to our hobby.

How about NEVER detect the play area of a field only the sidelines!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If one is unable to retrieve coins without digging a plug, or damaging the sod, then definitely, stay away from the playing field. Otherwise, there should be no problem.
