Heavy metal and horror have a complex and interesting history of reasons we got to this point. Where did the correlation between horror, the occult and more taboo topics come from in metal and what movements/genres best encapsulate this or resulted in it? Let's talk about that in this video essay!

Horror and metal is one of those peanut butter and jelly combinations that just makes perfect sense. Both are extreme art focused on pushing boundaries and there is a lot of overlap in the fans. I’ve wondered recently if we’re going to start seeing metal bands inspired by internet horror, since there’s a lot of adults who grew up on SCP Foundation, creepypastas, and horror KZfaq. Closest thing I can think of to that being the band Voraath

One of the bands that needs to be discussed in connection to horror is Goblin. Dario Argento is the master of Italian Splatter and Giallo. In 1975 he had Goblin do the film score for "Deep Red" ("Profondo Rosso" Original Italian title). Goblin is a progressive rock/heavy metal band which gave a very different tone to Argento's movies. In addition to many of his films they did the score for his classic "Susperia." This is really where metal started moving into the horror film genre.

Have you seen "Deep Red." I rank it higher than "Susperia." Argento is my favorite director, so I pretty much recommend almost everything he did.@@jaimeweida

@@williamwhalen746 Of course and I love it too! I have to admit, however, that I will always have a soft spot for Argento’s “Three Mothers” trilogy: “Suspiria,” “Inferno,” and “Mother of Tears.” I think that Argento best displays his over-the-top but also kind of perfect use of colour saturation, as well as a creepy environment that ALMOST verges on paraody/humour, in those films. BUT I will freely admit that I was very disappointed in “Mother of Tears!” I like “Opera” too.

@@jaimeweida "Opera" is my favorite Argento film. It is amazing stylistic tour de force. I will admit to a weak ending, but it is still my favorite.

"Hello (...) you absolute goons" 😂 Anyway, i personally prefer the deep introspective stuff but when a run of the mill cheesy death metal band makes a stupid song about a zombie invasion, im down. Sometimes the over the top gore and violence in some songs go so over the top that its more funny to listen to then scary and makes it a really good listening experience. I also bands that make you feel uncomfortable, like some evil being is watching your every move, that actually makes me feel scared. And its exhilarating. (A really good example of this is the album Deathrites pt1 by Deathrite Inanis 定め , they are like this super underground atmoblack thing that sounds like nightmare fuel in a good way.

Horror and Heavy Metal Music goes together! Been saying this for years now. Everything from Alice Cooper to Cannibal Corpse go great with horror. Death Metal & Shock Rock comes to mind with Horror, Gore, Everything Sexual, Violence, Etc.

Alice Cooper was among the first (not THE first but one of them) to inject horror into rock. And we wouldn’t have bands doing on/off stage personas, theatrics, and horror imagery if it wasn’t for him. I feel like he is not talked about nearly as much in the rock and metal community as he should be in regards to his influence in both the music and the art!! Stay metal my friends!! :)

I listen to and enjoy bands based in or sing about horror- Deathless Legacy, Helloween, Sabbath, Dio, Lesbian Red Death along with death metal but for movies I actually find more gothic music works better to create an atmosphere. For example Smile from last year used different sounds to create just a very uncomfortable feeling.

With the first tolling of that bell on Black Sabbath (influenced by the wonderful Maria Bava film...check it out if you haven't), metal & horror have walked through the graveyard hand-in-fetid-and-bloody-hand. I still prefer horror films (especially B-grade and Eurocult) from the silents through the 70s, so I love Alice Cooper, White Zombie/early Rob Zombie, Bloody Hammers, and The Vision Bleak.

I agree with everything EXCEPT Marilyn Manson, I think this take completely misses point of most of his music, I’d suggest re-listening and paying closer attention to the lyrics rather than imagery, wchich does borrow from horror. I think the overlap and clash of metal and horror has something to do with the type of people it attracts and its position in the entertainment landscape. Both is an acquired taste, wchich tends to gravitate those who enjoy it to even deeper and more intense forms, similiarly to how you start listening to Korn, then move onto Slipknot and in few years you end up listening to Anaal Nathrakh, you start with something like Stephen King’s movies and end up liking 70s grindhouse slashers, David Lynch and David Cronenberg instead. Also Black Sabbath’s earliest lyrics were just as much about horror, as much as war, specifically war in Vietnam, wchich was for them very real thing.

I know this is kinda off topic but, is it bad that I still listen to Marilyn Manson? I’m a firm believer in separate the art from the artist and Manson is no exception. Yes he is a bad person and I wish nothing but for him to be behind bars, but at the same time I like his music and don’t think that I should just stop listening to his music. It’s kind of like how rap fans acknowledge Kanye West as a bad person, but still listen to his music because they recognize Kanye was a rap icon in the past. Manson was a shock rock icon and his status and past achievements I don’t think should be stripped away from him. At the end of the day, all our lives are short. You can not listen to controversial artists if you think that because you see or listen to their art it makes you a bad person, but I prefer to live life to the fullest. Even if it means I listen to controversial artists. All I will say is that I’m not heading to any of Manson’s concerts where he is on tour with Five Finger Death Punch. Mostly because Manson concerts I heard from other people suck in general. Probably due to Manson being drugged to the tits
