I'll stick with a dishing stump that's lower to the ground, but definitely like the tyre idea! you could probably mount it to a base that you can clamp down to the table, and fill the centre with something to give you the control you need.

I can see in your technique that you have taken some pro shaper classes with with Wray, very interesting use of a tire I have to try it , I think your tucking tool needs something to soften the edge, so it doesn’t mar the metal keep up the great work

Yes I learned a lot from Wray! I consider him a friend! Also I use the same plastic material on the dies that Wray uses on his, its that polymorph, I just haven't put it on yet, I think I'm going to cut the dies off and make a different tool out of it, like a press hammer I'm going to try out. thanks for watching man!

I like the idea of using the tire as a tool. I definitely believe in thinking outside the box. It gives you the results you want - and apparently 9:17 faster. Correct me if I’m wrong but it strikes me that the sandbag actually *stretches* the middle more thus requiring less shrinking around the outside. Just pointing this out in case it matters. In most cases it probably doesn’t as long as you get the shape you want. Also, this is great for a round part while the bag might be better when making an oblong shape - so don’t throw out the sandbag.

It looks like a non-pnumatic tire. Are they both easy to come by & cheap? Tree stumps have been used. You might have to re-arc the concave depression after much use &/or for different shapes. Possibly a 3-4 foot piece of tree trunk of the hardest wood u can get would suffice. Or a few feet of 2 x 4s, 4 x 4s, etc. glued/nailed together. You may find free or super cheap scraps. Be inventive.
@BeAMetalFabricator
