As someone who grew up in both the metalhead and punk spaces and has adopted many beliefs from both in multiple communities, I wanted to try to identify and go over the differences between metalheads and punk fans! What are the differences you've personally noticed?

I wanted to go into some of the differences and things I've noticed as someone within both communities in terms of what I enjoy/frequent. What are some of the differences you've noticed and which do you feel more inclined to 'fit in' with? Be sure to let me know down below, can't wait to hear!!!!!!! But for now, cheers, rock on, stay heavy and have yourselves a fantastic rest of your day or night, depending on when you see this!!!!!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

Punk fans definitely care more about the lyrics and the message behind the music. Metal fans care more about the technicality and think something is better if it’s heavier or more complicated to play.

I've noticed that metalheads typically have a more right leaning mindset, and punk/metalcore/hardcore adjacent fans are typically more left leaning as well.

I find this only true in very small pockets (like with Pantera, Zakk Wylde, etc). Most metalheads very much shun the concepts of the right. Innate hierarchies over independence and equality, tradition and authority over freedom and rights, law over justice... this does not jibe with the overwhelming majority of metalheads.

@@williamhutton2126 I think you misunderstand the right, but yeah, most metalheads are right leaning, or are at least libertarians
@williamhutton2126
@williamhutton2126 Ай бұрын
@@Rattlehead-gy9ct I don't misunderstand the right at all. And, as I stated, no most metalheads aren't. Even looking at some of the biggest and most influential bands from early on, regardless of if individual members of that band are capital driven narcissistic POS (looking at you, Lars), their songs rarely, if ever, reflected right leanings. Hell, simply being anti war and anti war profiteering (which many bands almost religiously rebelled against) disabuses several fundamental axioms of right wing politics in that one concept. Right wingers are sheep. It's foundational; fundamental. Most metalheads don't tend to follow an authority much less the crowd. Perhaps some rudimentary education on the topic of political leanings is in order? Possibly even understanding the etymology of the terms 'right' and 'left' from it's beginnings in the French Revolution?
@Rattlehead-gy9ct
@Rattlehead-gy9ct Ай бұрын
@williamhutton2126 your perception of the right is locked in decades long past. Who is against funding foreign wars? The left has been screaming to fund Ukraine for years. The right has been far more divided in the issue. Most political songs written by metal bands are about freedom of speech (mostly for PMRC reasons), and while the PMRC was right-leaning, it is, in fact, the left who demands the regulation of speech. The matter of the fact is that the left IS THE ESTABLISHMENT, so everything that was anti-establishment then is now recontextualized as right-leaning. The left controls the media with the exception of Fox News and some online creators, they control the entire education system, and they have ingrained themselves in Hollywood. Anybody who is anti-establishment right now, is right leaning, and anybody who says otherwise is living in a fantasy. And yes, I do know where the terms "right" and "left" come from. Perhaps a lesson in not being a condescending asshole is due.

As a metal head I do agree gatekeeping is a big problem in the metal scene. It should also pointed there is definitely a lot elitism in the punk scene. Tons of punk bands have been called sell outs for experimenting with new sound. A good example of this is black flag when they did a slower, sabbathy sound on the b-side of my war

Im a metalhead and one of my best friends is a punk singer. I find it fascinating to notices the similarities and differences between us, our music tastes, and just the scenes in general. I personally find, even if the music sometimes overlaps, a lot of the differences between metal and punk bands (and in extension their fans), is just the overall attitude. Punk fans just have a more "i dont care what people think" mentality that sometimes is missing in metal imo.

I'm a Euro kid of the late '90s/early '00s and things probably changed but here's my experience in both scenes at the time: - Metalheads would flip out over aesthetics or anyone not listening to the so-called "list of approved bands" but overall wouldn't care too much about politics, whether rightwing or leftwing. Punks would be the exact opposite: if u don't dress or act "punk" enough most wouldn't really care, but they would absolutely lose their shit if u come as close as an inch of disagreement with them on their insular political stances. - Call their music garbage and the average metalhead would go like: "Nooo but the intricate guitar parts and the compositions and X and Y, u just don't understand music!!!" Call their music shit and the average punk kid would go like: "Yeah it is... but it's fun though!" - Metalheads tended to be waaayy more insular than the average punk crowd. - Most punks tended to be contre-left to far-left. In case politics were involved in the metal scene then metalheads would mostly just be contrarian: they would identify the "mainstream political climate" and go in the exact opposite direction, whether rightwing or leftwing.

I have found it a bit hard to make friends with metalheads because discussing music (even if amicably) will often start off with the other person assuming you as a 'poser' or the other person worried that you are going to think they are a poser. And even though I agree metalheads tend to be fairly tolerant, there's more skepticism and 'testing' towards people who don't have the 'metalhead' look of a white guy with long hair, black T-shirt, baggy jeans and boots. And *god help you* if you're a guy who paints your nails or does anything perceived as feminine (or maybe that type of bigotry is just from my scruffy local community). And also tbh metalheads take themselves and metal itself way too fucking seriously.

I have experience in both scenes as a lot of my taste overlaps between genres so I know people from both sides, I identify more with the punk scene because I like to feel connected to the music I’m listening to which I find a lot harder to do with metal, saying that I see a lot of elitism in the punk scene particularly when dealing with older people who can’t let go of the pistols, I generally just find metal fans harder to identify with and relate to despite loving the music, your comment about crowdkilling was spot on too as I’ve had this conversation multiple times (and taken multiple hits) we generally see it as a ‘you know what you’re gonna get if you’re too close to the pit’ mentality but it’s just part of the community and passion for the music

Good video, but saying that punks are liberal isn't very accurate since the movement is very rooted in anti capitalism
@iachtulhu1420

By "liberal" I assume he means being liberal in social issues and progressivism in modern sense. Liberalism on the other hand is a capitalist socio-economic ideology. More radical punx are against liberalism in this sense, not against being liberal in social causes. I myself I have a generally liberal outlook on social issues, but I'm severely critical of liberalism of any sort, even "enlightened" liberalism aka capitalism with human face.

I'm both Punk fan and a MetalHead, but when it comes right down to it I'm a Punk that listens to mostly Punk Metal and Folk. Outside of that I also like Jazz especially free Jazz Experimental Reggae/Ska/Dub Funk Blues, Certain kinds of country Hip-hop Rap Avante Garde and music from around the globe played using instruments specifically from that country or region. I am obsessed with music in general, but I definitely get more critical and specific outside of my 3 main styles. Songs that aren't superficial bs I love the most, even if their pop or Soul. I also like parody and sarcastic bands. My opinions on history and the world tend to alter what I bands I enjoy, and in certain cases, lead to me completely dropping them. By the same reasoning I might start listening to an artist band project or group because they compliment my personal opinions.

ive personally experienced that some (not all) metal fans kinda just disregard punk. specifically and ironically metalcore and deathcore fans. i dont know why that is because im a fan of all 3 genres but some people just dont get it and thats fine. expanding on someone elses comment yeah i go to punk when i want lyrics and simple melodies and rhythms. and i go to metal when i wanna be impressed with musicianship. either way is great and can be appreciated just as intensely. Edit: in my country the punk scene has literally died. there are 0 punk bands currently active in my country (trinidad and tobago). Ive heard awesome stores of local punk bands back in the day when it was a thing. but now all that exists here is metal. which isnt bad but add a little hardcore in the mix and it can be a great scene. ive worn a black flag shirt to a couple concerts and people genuinely dont know who they are. been stopped twice was asked if they were playing that night.

I can only speak from my experiences in Australia, but the biggest difference I noticed between the punks and headbangers I grew up with was the hair. We all wore denim and flannel, our t-shirts were rarely understated, and most of us wore DMs or ratty, almost-falling-apart sneakers

If you look at it besides say The Ramones and Dead Kennedys you also had Talking Heads, Blondie and others that were considered punk. Hell, technically you can consider Velvet Underground was the beginning of punk. All great bands.

I always considered myself an old punk. But one the whole I prefer to be amongst metal heads. They are much more layed back and fun to have a drink with. Punks are often more creative and political, but can be a bit obnoxious somethimes. Just like rockabilly/psychobilly fans, I LOVE the music but most of them are high nosed or downright irritating. Punk, quite literally began as a culture focused almost solely on looks rather than substance. It originated from mods (modernists) and beatniks in London. And, as I wrote to another commenter below, most metalheads very much shun the concepts of the right. Innate hierarchies over independence and equality, tradition and authority over freedom and rights, law over justice, reaction over education... this does not jibe with the overwhelming majority of metalheads. Metalhead culture is so chill in general precisely because it tends to reject the axioms of right wing politics. Not saying there aren't right wing metalheads, because of course there are. Metal has one of if not the most diverse collection of musical influences in the world. Personally, I'm a metalcore fan who grew up on both punk and metal. And agree that there is definitely overlap between liberal and progressive thoughts and attitudes. But even looking at some of the biggest and most influential bands from early on, regardless of if individual members of that band are capital driven narcissistic POS (looking at you, Lars), their songs rarely, if ever, reflected right leanings. Hell, simply being anti war and anti war profiteering (which many bands almost religiously rebelled against) disabuses several fundamental axioms of right wing politics in that one concept. I think it's a great conversation to be had at any rate.

Metalheads don't care who you sleep with, who you vote for, what you eat, or what you look like but if you mislabel a band's genre all hell breaks loose, since the mid 2000's with the rise in metalcore Metal started looking and acting much more like the punk subculture used to be, what is funny to me through is the cognitive dissonance and hypocrisy that is beginning to occur in punk as left wing cultural ideals becomes more and more mainstream while right wing becomes more and more counterculture, while i am absolutely opposite to fascism/nazisim Nazi punks are the definition of counterculture.

Ever since the current war started here in Israel the punk vs metal beef has become even more extreme, especially between punk vs metalcore. We in the Israeli metal scene lost a very dear member, The drummer of the metalcore band Persephore who was taken hostage by Hamas and was killed there, and ever since his death we've become a pretty nationalist and patriotic scene. We all spread the message and flood comment sections of Scowl, Speed, Enter Shikari and many other bands who are against us and we at the same time show lots of love to David Draiman and Ronnie Radke for standing with us. Meanwhile there are punk, grind and crossover bands here who are either Pro Palestine or even Pro Hamas that have made many statements that support our enemy, have done charity events for Pro Palestine causes and even talked shit about Persephore and their late drummer. The beef we have with them is way beyond punk vs metal.
