Life it seems, will fade away
Drifting further every day
Getting lost within myself
Nothing matters no one else
I have lost the will to live
Simply nothing more to give
There is nothing more for me
Need the end to set me free
Things not what they used to be
Missing one inside of me
Deathly lost, this Can t be real
Cannot stand this hell I feel
Emptiness is filling me
To the point of agony
Growing darkness taking dawn
I was me, but now he 's gone
No one but me can save myself, but it's too late
Now, I can't think, think why I should even try
Yesterday seems as though it never existed
Death Greets me warm, now I will just say goodbye

1972 here, I just turned 50 this March....... This song takes me all the way back to memories of winter 1984 in 7th grade, small town western Illinois...12/13 yrs old, I'd tag along with my older brother & his friends. I remember riding around in the back seat of my brothers friends 1970's Plymouth Scamp, aimlessly cruising down snow covered winter country roads with this song cranked up on the radio. We'd go "bumper skiing" = find a snow packed covered country road and hang onto the rear bumper while being pulled at 50 mph. Somehow no one got injured, that was our way of dealing with being broke & bored to death, stuck in a small Illinois town.

Fuck them! They don’t know shit about Metal artists. They are the most understanding artists that want to bring people together not separate them like how politics do. This was the song my brother killed himself too when I was only 3 years old. I listen to this because somehow it makes me feel connected to him, like he's talking to me telling what he was going through, I hate listening to it, but something keeps pulling me to it, I cant stop listening to it sometimes. It just feels like he is speaking to me through the lyrics. Please, if you are listening to this song wanting to end it all. Please believe that it is not worth it. Its been almost 15 years and it haunts my entire family and even me at 18. Please be strong, live on to hear this badass guitar solo again, or to feel the joy of your favorite song. It is never worth it and there is always a better day waiting for you.

It’s really sad how many people can relate to this song. And it often goes untouched until it’s too late. Guys, please, if you know someone who has suicidal thoughts, tell someone you know the person can trust. Help them find help. And if you’re feeling this way, understand that you’re not alone, and others feel the same way you do. Regardless of how lonely you feel, there’s always going to be someone you can talk to. Everyone here in the comments care about you and want to help you. You’re special in you’re own way, and I mean it. Don’t give up.

This song was a huge wake up call to me. I was and still am struggling with manic depression and I mentally break down infront of my girlfriend telling her how I just wish the pain would go away. I considered suicide until I started realizing that that not only am I too young but I have so much talent that I would be wasting, It’s hard but I manage to pull through and that is what my friends have told me makes me one of the strongest people they have met. All my life has been pain and suffering because I was always the child the family never wanted. But now I have a purpose in like and that’s to shred peoples faces off with metal

I'm not sure. I think you are messing up medical depressions which have a high likelihood of killing you eventually and a normal phase of being sad. In the latter the music might help, and that's what you experience and write about. In the former I think the music hasn't much of an influence and if, rather a malicious one. But as I said, I'm not sure.

Having to take care of my dying grandma, mother is crazy and homeless , don’t have relationship with dad, hopping from one miserable job to another, no relationship, my goals and dreams just seem so far away. My smile got messed up due to teeth work. Lost money. Etc it’s just goes on & on but I still have hope things will get better. Someday I will be truly happy.

You know? The first time I listened to this song was on my way to school, which, right now, is the only thing making me miserable. And yes, I have laid in bed just listening to this song on some low moments, but now, that will change. Today I have decided that this will be some sort of anthem for me to keep going. That final solo is some of the most inspiring things I have the honor of listening to, and it makes me want to keep going, despite its meaning. To anyone struggling: Don't worry. You have managed to get out of similar situations, you'll manage to get out of this one too. You got this.

I remember the first time I heard this song, it was two years ago when I was fifteen. It was a the bad time in my life, but nobody acually knew. My step father loves Metallica, so he told me to listen to One and try them out. I listen to One, liked it, then to The Unforgiven, and even liked it more, and then Fade to Black. I remember lying in bed all alone with my headphones, it was 1-2 AM.... looked to the ceiling and listened to the melody carefully... I'm not a crying girl, but it was the first time when I started crying even before James started singing... The melody already told the story of the song, and that strong intuitoin made me cry... Such a song...

Found this song two years ago too, when I was 15 myself. I was going through some things that I didn't know how to cope with, and didn't tell anyone, just kept it to myself. I found this song by accident while listening to my Rock playlist, it came on autoplay. I was hooked by acoustic guitar, and I found that the lyrics touched me more than I thought they would. I never cried because of this song, or any song, I'm just not an emotional person. But I felt like it touched this itch inside of me that no other song would.

It is art no doubt, and everyone who's had depression, or hasn't had depression can enjoy this artist piece of music. However, in my opinion this song has a very special place in the hearts of those who have had depression.

I am 46 years old in 2019. I remember listening to this album for the first time back in junior high on a walk man in study hall. ( kids look up walkman)...haha...When i got to this song i stopped and kept rewinding the cassette tape and listening to it over and over. That my friends is the sign of a great song. The ones you can't get enough of. To me this is one of these all time great songs. A true classic.

I’m suffering from depression, going through toxic relationships from people feeling and barely having anybody there and I just lock myself in my room listening to this song and it just hits me to the core. The Lord put music in my heart which I believe. So this song hits hard. My all time favorite Metallica song.

Life, it seems, will fade away Drifting further, every day Getting lost within myself Nothing matters, no one else I have lost the will to live Simply nothing more to give There is nothing more for me Need the end to set me free Things not what they used to be Missing one inside of me Deathly loss, this can't be real I cannot stand this hell I feel Emptiness is filling me To the point of agony Growing darkness, taking dawn I was me, but now he's gone No one but me Can save myself But it's too late Now I can't think Think why I should even try Yesterday seems as though It never existed Death greets me warm Now I will just say goodbye Bye...

In my younger days I was very active, hiking, hunting , fishing, motorcycles...... now at 56 I have lost both legs below the knees. This song tells it like it is and I can relate. Trying to deal with where I am now. Great tune, spent all night last night staring at my .40 and wondering how long I can hold out.

When you listen to this song and the entire album and compare to the stuff they've been realeasing in the last 30 years then you realize how deep the mighty have fallen! Between 83 and 88 they were trully magnificent. They were never this old school thrash metal band. Their music was something else beyond that label. When they were in their prime they composed some of best music the world has ever listened. When I was a kid I knew all their songs and lyrics by hart, but I was to naive to understand the depht of some of their songs. This was one of those.

I liked playing songs like fade to black/one/welcome home for my grandparents because they naturally loved the acoustic parts... then the metal bits would blow them away. Metallica is one hell of a gateway drug into heavy metal.

I just want to be more than the dad who gave up and faded into black left alone in my darkness ever wondering by myself so I can't feel a hurt, devastated mind and torcherd soul again!?! Well I need to ride this life out for my other loves and I will be back with him again. ...

Aaron Gibson Brother I am so profoundly sorry for your lost. Only a father that lost his son as well can even begin to understand the agony of what you are going through. My boy Zakary Storm Butrym lost his battle back in 2007 but reading your post makes it feel like it was just yesterday. I'm having a hard time seeing the keyboard through the tears. I won't try to tell you what to do or how to handle this but what I will do is say a prayer for you & give you my number. I don't have any expectations of you calling nor would I be upset if you don't want to. I just don't want you to ever feel like nobody cares. I pray your road runs straight and that you learn as much as you can during those sharp & sudden curves. Rich 520-305-7287. Till we see them again.....
