So, this is metal. One time at a concert in Portland, Dave Lombardo from Slayer and their sound guy put a cassette version of this on as house music and the kids were all head banging in a circle. The drummer for Slayer literally introduced me to this album. (He also told me to kill a f-g, but, let’s not go there. It was the ‘80s) Back in the day, we referred to this as METALLIFUCKINGCA!! This is the real deal. Best songs on this album is Seek and Destroy. One time at a party I met a girl in a Metallica shirt watching Cliff ‘em All by herself in my friend’s room. Eventually, I married her. We’re going to Iron Maiden on Friday, and Ghost next week.

It all started for me with this song :) I was 11, listened to pop music, the heaviest song I'd heard was "Thunderstruck" by AC/DC. One day my best friend brought me a tape and asked me to give it a listen. It was "Kill'Em All". The order of the songs was messed up, so the tape started with "Whiplash". As soon as I heard the riff, I was blown away. My musical world turned upside down. I've been a metal-head since - for almost 30 years now :)

I first saw Metallica at the Monsters of Rock festival (UK) August 1985. You can imagine what an impression it made on us at the time. They were relatively unknown (apart from a few grainy tapes some of us had heard) but their music and presence made most of us big fans from that point forward. Whiplash was in the setlist just after Seek & Destroy and before Am I Evil. Thanks for this reaction - it was pretty much the same as I had when I first heard it all those years ago.

@@Salomon_G Back in 89. A song this good with this kind of potential should be played a lot more often. Some songs have been played close to 7000 times, and I don't think they are as good. ajfa was played just for a few hundreds. So yeah, it is underrated, considering it's potential.

As a teenager living near the Bay Area when this album came out, i remember kids who hung out in the smoking section at my high school playing this cassette on their "boom boxes". A lot of them had homemade Metallica sleeveless t-shirts that were spray painted or drawn with permanant markers. As a young kid, i didn't think much of it at the time. But looking back on it now, it really shows how incredibly rabid and loyal Metallica fans have been from the begining. While only being a huge fan of the 3 albums that followed "Kill Em All" and thinking still to this day that the Metallica "Metal Up Your Ass" t-shirt was the greatest band shirt in history, i cannot deny the impact and influence they've had on the Metal genre. IMHO, Black Sabbath is the foundation, Metallica is the structure, and Pantera is the roof for which all metal bands live and play today!!
@tarkus1056
@tarkus1056 4 жыл бұрын
I love Pantera, but I think its influence is a bit overrated. Outside of Dimebag influencing a lot of LEAD guitar players, what Pantera influenced was Nu Metal and specially the NWOAHM (FFDP, Lamb of God, Trivium, Avenged Sevenfold,etc.). That's their legacy. The only two "big" bands outside of those genres I can think of where you can hear their influence are Nevermore and late-Symphony X, and the influence is pretty diluted (just some riffs and maybe a couple vocal performances). You also don't see Groove Metal bands anymore, aside from when Thrash Metal bands jumped on the bandwagon in the mid to late 90's for like one album only (Anthrax, Testament come to mind). It's like their influence comes down to the same 3 "Pantera style" riffs.

@@tarkus1056 You're missin the boat here. Just because a band doesn't sound like Pantera or Metallica or Sabbath doesn't mean they weren't influenced by them. Im guessing you're younger than i am but Tony Iomi guitarist and majority song writer for Black Sabbath was influenced by "The Shadows". Google or KZfaq them and hear how they sound NOTHING alike. So let me be a little more specific. Obviously Sabbath created the heavy metal genre. Where you see their influence in all metal music is the mainly the profound presence and tone of the guitar in the song. Metallica influence is that they played a more up tempoed style. Along with Motorhead, they pretty much pioneered that "speed metal" aspect of heavy metal. Now as far as Pantera goes! I absolutely feel that Dimebag was one of the all time greats and was a huge influence. But to me, Vinnie's drumming is where you hear a lot of Pantera influence in metal. Primarily in the complex double bass playing that completely changed the genre. Are there other bands that were and are influencial in today metal music? Yes. Did they contribute to the metal genre? Yes. But at the end of the day, those band simply did not have the kind of impact on metal music in the way Sabbath, Metallica and Pantera did. Again IHMO.

Finally, finally you get it. I was first turned on to Metalica in a car full of friends Six of us. The two blow us all away. We all Thrashed and it never was the same after Whiplash. This Song started a whole new trend. We live life as Thrashers from that day. The rich boys from Queens and Long Island meet the Bad Ass Boys from Brooklyn, we grew in these new fronteer. I hung out with Slayer fans Universal Skins who Moshed. Then going to the Metal Chicks in Long Island. We were all badass. Was a insain time to be a teenager or young man or women. Wild and crazy fun. Explosive. They kept coming at us with Battery damage incorporated. Anthrax S.O.D. Edgadi breaking hoods on cars moshing driving through wooden gates. Doing you girlfriend anywhere you could. Drinking with the boys. Van Halen, Rush, Slayer Metalica S.O.D. Oh man - what a ride. People see me today can never make the correlation. Finally you hit the launch button. My later year's got into Megadeth. Married had kids live a Christian life but now my kids are grown and they have their own on line groups, it's so different. My wife can't relate, I'm trying to understand. I like reaction videos because I enjoy seeing younger people enjoy different things especially the stuff I lived through. I will be a badass Gramps I'll make sure of that. These kids today need to understand what a man and women is. A patriarchal God and country not a commi emasculated slave society. I wish we could have been more convincing. Anyways glad your having fun with the Thrash anthem.

You guys should check out a Jazz/Death Metal band by the name of Trepalium. Songs like Moonshine Limbo and Fire On Skin are incredible! Keep up the awesome work. Much love!

This is a sort of homage to their fans. When they toured, they changed the lyrics from 'cause we're Metallica' to 'cause you're Metallica'. They knew that without the fans they wouldn't be where they were/are. Should check out Cliff's bass solo before this song.

They recorded it less than 2 miles from my house in Rochester, NY. They played all the local joints in Rochester and all the kids loved it. Everyone knew they that they had something going.

The things I loved about this song : 1. The speed/tempo 2. The energy 3. The split of drums in one ear/channel and guitar in the other during the intro 4. The use of profanity in the lyrics at least twice (back in the day, when I was an easily-amused 13-yr-old, it was still new and riské for rock music to get away with swearing on their recordings) 5. The last line in the final verse, "We'll never stop, we'll never quit, cos we're Metallica" The one thing I hated : 1. Anesthesia being abruptly stopped by the beginning of Whiplash, which made trying to get a clean severance impossible (back in the day of cassette dubbing) without clipping Whiplash or still getting a split-second fragment of the screeching bass from Anesthesia. That said, I am impressed and pleased to see someone took the trouble of making that clean edit (or was fortunate to find one). For anyone interested, I used to play around with remixing and editing as a teen (and still do all kinds of post-engineering edits and modifications), and made some minor "enhancements" to Whiplash here : kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g7tdiNifz7rKnWw.html
