I never connected my diarrhea with Metformin. I take 1000 mg twice a day and I have to go after every meal and sometimes several times a day and couldn’t figure out what was causing it. Makes it hard to go anywhere or travel when I’m constantly searching for a restroom. My doctor never told me to take Metformin with food either. I was also diagnosed with anemia about a year or so ago and had to start on B12 supplements daily and iron supplements 3 times a week. I will have to have a talk with my doctor!

Diane, you should get blood work done again. I just had mine back from the lab and my Ferritin levels were too high. Too much iron in the body can be one of the things that cause diabetes. Wishing you all the best.

I have been taking Metformin for years. When I first started taking it I had diarrhea and thought I had been given a gastrointestinal surgery without my permission, but it eventually decreased and I lost weight. I am currently taking 1000mg bid but feel the dose can-be decreased and I will discuss this with my pcp

For three years I take regular metfomin 500 twice a day and always with meals. Many thanks to my pharmacist, I don't have any of those side effects from the beginning. He told me to make it a habit to take the pill in the middle of the meal, and it works well. Plus, I am a 70 plus years old positive minded buddhist nun, and meditate every day. Thanks doctor !

Morning Doctor, I'm taking metformin 500 mg. Twice a day. My question is do I have to take both pills at once?? Cause I take one pill in the morning after breakfast or lunch. My other dose I can't it at bedtime. Is this bad ? What's your opinion? I'm a pre diabetic .

Metformin ER has really worked well for me. 500 mg twice a day. For a total a 1,000 mg. My HbA1c has been 5.7% for the last eight months. My Metformin was not recalled.

I've been on Metformin for 14 years and I still experience diarrhea about once or twice a week. Thank God for Imodium. If I am going on a flight I take 3 Imodium prior to the flight. If I am going out to dinner I will usually take two Imodium prior to leaving the house. If I have breakthrough diarrhea, I take three Imodium for my first dose, and about an hour later I take two more. In about three hours I am fine. I take the ER dose with meals.

Took Metformin twice daily for fifteen years. I stop 4yrs. Ago got stroke half body paralyzed now I came back 😍 n wiser. Got still young look they says. I'm 62 y.old looks 50's just watching I eàt. Your information very good on Target. God bless 😍🤩😊🌻🌻

If you eat right and keep your carbs low and don't eat anything with lots of sugar and added sugars you may be able to get yourself off metformin.

My A1c came back at 6.5 and doctor prescribed metformin and it made me feel like crap. Had no energy. I threw it in the trash, and been doing pretty good just keeping a close watch on my carbs.

Yes, diarrhea and stomach pains are my problems. I used to take 1000mg 2x a day. Now I’m only taking 500mg a day. In the future should I go back to 1000mg? My side effects are gone but I still get diarrhea from time to time. Thank you for educating us!👍

I get diarrhea sometimes on the ER version, but it relates to my diet, not the medication. I found Metformin sets dietary boundaries for me and, when I go outside those boundaries, I trigger the side effects. I use Metformin to help blood sugar control. I use the side effects as a way to reinforce how important it is to stay on-diet.

Metformin is typically first thing tried (along with carb counting diet, increased exercise, etc.) because Metformin is unlikely to cause a hypoglycemic event vs. other meds for type 2 diabetes. That said, plenty of type 2 diabetics get it under complete control (A1c eventually

Recently gave up metformin after 13 years. Since 2016 I had tummy pain, bloating & diarrhoea. I was put on proton pump inhibitors for excess stomach acids. Little help. I was so weak in the mornings. Suffered for past 2 years. Food intolerances. In May 2021 ended up with acute gall bladder bursting thru high inflammation. Was put of metformin. All changed for the better. No more PPI, no food intolerance, no more chronic pain. I'm 67 & free. If only I knew this 5 years ago.

I feel some discomfort of taking 500 mg of metformin , im always have imflamation on my knee and my right side belly is paining . I think i want to lower to 250 bcoz before idont have this pain in my knee and to my belly, im walking 30 min after lunch to lower my sugar but its alawys 8,2 my A1C

Since I started metformin I have been loosing approximately 1 pound per day. I have started on a 500mg per day; taking 1 tablet twice daily. I started with 1 tablet cut in half with food and worked my way up to the 500mg as prescribed. I have not had any of the side effects described in this video except a couple of times pain in my liver area. Should I be concerned about the weight loss.

I developed a severe diarrhea, I got off metformin and diarrhea went away. I started the keto diet and increased my fat intake. I usually add butter to my coffee before breakfast, I started back the metformin but I also divided my dosage by 3 and took it with each meal. Coating my stomach with some type of fat works for me. No more diarrhea!

My main side effects are night sweats. My doc tested me for all kinds of stuff and was all clear. So my doc put me on a 2wk vacation. By the 2nd day i had no night sweats. I'm taking it once a day with my dinner and I eat a snack before bed. Hel

I appreciate this video. I have developed NIDDM in the last 3 months. My hgbA1c is 7.4. Will start on the ER 500mg daily tomorrow. I had part of my pancreas removed last year ( along with several others parts, due to a cancer) & am wondering if that might have caused the DM. I’m hoping I can resolve the DM with diet /exercise. I lost so much weight during cancer tx & recovery, last admission to the hospital was for “failure to thrive”. Gradually my weight stabilized & then I began to gain. I gained back the 80 # I’d lost.

What about hair loss? Just started taking and my scalp has started to itch a lot, my hair is very dry and falling out. Before taking, my hair used to be thick and silky. Completely different texture now. Aside from thx hair issues, I love what it does for me.

Thank you so much! I 've been on metformin for a long time! Wow..had no idea about all of this! Thank you. My daughter has PCOS and I think I have had it too but never knew. She takes it for that only. I take 1000 mg at night and 500mg in the morning. I will make sure my nighttime will be with food! So you recommend the ER as opposed to regular? Thanks again! It's usually prescribed for diabetes when diet and exercise alone have not been enough to control your blood sugar levels. I'm in the US and here it is very common for doctors to start people on Metformin before even trying diet and exercise. A lot of people are already obese from a lack of blood sugar control. Through out my life I have see many people decide to "get healthy" and go on a diet and start exercising. They injure themselves because they are carrying so much extra weight and that's the end of the "get healthy" effort. Loose the weight first, then exercise. Exercise is good but it only makes about a 2% effect on weight loss.

I'm trying to get my A1c under control, don't want to take metformin. My husband takes it and gets uncontrollable diarrhea, has accidents, embarrassing. He has many other side effects. I'd rather die than go through what he goes through.

Any ideas on this, Dr. Ergin? Recently diagnosed type2. Peripheral neuropathy in my feet got better with insulin as my blood glucose came under control, then a LOT worse after a couple of months on metformin, to the point of interfering with sleep. From what I've read, B12 deficiency is not the only factor in metformin's possible negative effects on neuropathy (also homocysteine and methylmalonic acid). I just stopped taking Metformin in hopes that my feet will improve again. If meds are needed in addition to diet and exercise to maintain low blood glucose I could ask my Dr for a GLP-1 agonist?? I no longer require insulin.

I was recently prescribed Metformin again and I had horrible side effects the first time I took it. I have a rare blood cancer (Essential Thrombocythemia) and already suffer from some GI issues due to condition, is Metformin safe to take with blood thinners and any interaction with Essential Thrombocythemia ?

I was having Glycomat 500mg 3 times a day after meals and my sugar level never went down and it's always 280 t0 300 fbs level My doctor advised me to stop metformin and use Getryl 4 morning and night and Sita 100 in da afternoon. I'm also taking Animedox daily for anemic and Angizar H in the morning and Angizar 50 at night for pressure I'm 60years old. Doctor please I need your advise. I have a bloated stomach too. My doctor said that Metformin will affect the kidneys.

Can't tolerate even low dose regular with food or ER metformin. Severe gastrointestinal issues that don't go away after months, pancreatitis, several emergency room visits from pancreatitis and extreme dehydration. Can't swallow even small pills easily anyway due to severe spinal stenosis and punctures from a rare disease called OPLL in c2-c7. Sometimes my swallower gets "tired" mid swallow. Every single doc said if I can't take metformin, the only alternative is extreme dieting like intermittent fasting and keto or eating small bits every few hours (what I'm doing now). Tried the first two. Couldn't stay on them. I guess my point is metformin doesn't work for everybody. Stopped going to doctors and figured the OPLL will get me way before diabetes complications. Last A1C was 5.8.

Speaking for myself, and I'm guessing the majority of other people who are not posting on the internet, you may have no or very minor side effects. I have been taking metformin since there was no generic version and it was called Glucophage. I am taking 2X1000mgs daily, no problems, B12 not low, no stomach problems. It just works like it is supposed to.. I may see the side effect of greater longevity. I will be 79 in just a few days I am hoping one of the side effects of metformin is longevity, which.metformin is being tested for now.......Highly recommended by me after 25 plus years of taking it.....

If you are having too much side effects from Metformin you can reduce the dose and if still happening he can stop and replace with another agent.

@@helenzelaya-knox8959 Yes, it's metformin that is the longevity drug. Metformin and glimepiride work differently. Metformin helps your body use insulin more effectively, while glimepiride makes your pancreas produce more insulin. I take both....

Xr was easy on the gut .....but gave me my first and horrible lpr experience. Globus...burning throat....lump in the throat feeling....etc. went back to regular and the lpr went away gradually.

Excellent point. Probiotics and digestive enzymes should be taken whenever meds are used. Luckily I only take minimum dosage which in don’t plan on staying on for long
