Overcoming Flanderization: The Story of Donut

Franklin Delano Donut is one of those special types of characters who got the chance to overcome a element of his writing which used to define him. Unfortunately this change occurs during the controversial season 16 and 17 but hopefully with this video I can help people see what I apricate about Donut's character and it's growth alongside the fact that he's pretty important to the franchise since its onset.

Donut and Caboose were both random profile names you could have in CE, and they likely ran the same algorithm to choose names as the XBox name presets. 3 layers. In fact it's likely why Donut's personality became Donut

Every April Fool's it's the same: I get pleasantly surprised seeing your RvB video, watch it and enjoy thoroughly, am disappointed about needing to wait a whole year for the next one, then forget I'm waiting just in time for another genuinely great character analysis the next April.

Growing up watching RvB I always really missed Donut when he wasn’t in the show, and it took me awhile to realize why. His endless positivity really balances the show well. Whenever early seasons had some plot heavy sections, they never felt hopeless or like the show was turning serious because Donut was there. Perfect example is S7 with Donut and the Meta vs the A plot. And makes sense why killing Donut was the trigger for the show to get really serious. The other characters have a lot of nihilistic humor which makes the serious plotlines feel more serious than they should

joey's connection to red eyes is more of a call back to the season 0 movie about the card being the embodiment of potential which was kinda his thing back in duelist kingdom while at the same time gives him an ace/signature/boss monster like yugi & kaiba have since they didn't wanna use flame swordsman. also it adds to the parallel of joey & kaiba.

This video right here helps explain so well why I'll be really said if seasons 15-17 are deemed to not actually have happened (I haven't seen seasons 18-19). They absolutely had their flaws, but sometimes I think it's better to accept a piece of media for what it did right and wrong and work with it, then to deem it non cannon and start over. Those seasons giving time to flesh out the joke characters like Doc, Donut, Sister and Caboose is my favorite aspect of those seasons.

You haven't seen 19 because it's not out yet, but the trailer for it seems to imply that 15-18 were just simulations that Epsilon conducted, and thus never happened. I'll be so upset. I love 15-17.

Some of the characters did get some really good development though, mainly Donut, Carolina, and Grif. Carolina in particular had the most organic change from season 13 to 17, and it's clear that Sharkface had an impact on the way she thinks about war when you examine her mentality in 15 and 17.

Thinking about it now, I find it kind of nice that Epsilon would lean an entire simulation towards showing Donut he is more than he thought he was. As long as everyone Remembers what happened in the simulations that could be interesting in its own right.

As of now, we have no indication that either Dan Godwin or Donut are returning for Restoration. Which is a little sad. But, the teaser implied that the events of Shisno were something the characters experienced even if it wasn’t “real” so I’m hoping they just agreed that Donut ended on a high note and wanted to leave him there.
