Captured live during SDA's Summer Games Done Quick 2013 in which $255,160.62 in over 10000 individual donations to Doctors without Borders was raised (as of August 1st), making this the first time the $1,000,000 mark has been reached and surpassed for money raised by SDA charity marathons (in total across all marathons)!!!! A huge thanks to everyone who donated, the SDA community and all those who worked tirelessly to make the marathon another success. Here's to #AGDQ14:)
The game that started the Metroid series was released in August 1986 and follows Samus Aran's first encounter with the deadly Metroids. With no internal map, this is a game you were sure to get lost in. If you manage to finish the game in a fast enough time, you learn that Samus is a woman; the game manual was lying! Again, don't know if anyone will ever read this, but I thought it might be a good idea to explain how the enemy difficulty work. There are two flags in the enemy definition objects used either for mapping or screen generation that designate enemy 'difficulty' and whether or not the enemy is a boss. If the enemy 'difficulty' flag is clear, killing the enemy requires the default number of shots to kill, with 255 representing an enemy that is impossible to kill (like the yellow rippers in Brinstar). If the enemy 'difficulty' flag is set, the enemy requires twice as many shots to kill, but if the shots-to-kill value is 128 or larger, the result will be 256 less than twice the value, so those impossible to kill enemies require 254 shots instead (like the red rippers in Brinstar). Although it takes forever, you can kill a red ripper by shooting it repeatedly with any of the beams. The only reason the ice beam takes twice as many shots as the default beam, however, is because the ice beam only does damage if the enemy is frozen.
@theonewiththeeyeoftruth884
@theonewiththeeyeoftruth884 6 жыл бұрын
I had to read the "result will be 256 less than twice the value" part a few times over, but I think I get it. A _non-difficult_ Ripper is yellow, with a shot value of 255. 255 is treated as a special case and the shots go ping,ping,ping. Right? The _difficult_ Ripper (red) gets double the shot value 255 x 2 = 510, but since 510 is over a byte maximum value, 256 is subtracted, leaving 254. 254 is not treated as a special case, so it actually does take 254 shots to kill it (or I guess 127 Wave Beam shots). You seem very knowledgeable about the game's internal mechanics. Fun fact: The game freezes if you have no missile capacity (no missile containers and no minibosses dead), and you kill a Metroid that _would_ drop a missile fill-up. Does it every time. I think that's what happens with the NARPASSWORD password, since it forces infinite missiles without actual missile capacity. It handles health and probably missiles the same way as the shot value you talked about, subtracting (or adding) a fixed value when the value goes out of range. How much do you know about the password system?

I didn't have a reliable way to play the other games except Samus Returns, but now that all the 2D titles are on Switch except Zero Mission, I've marathoned 1, 2, AM2R, Samus Returns, Super Metroid, and just last night I finished Metroid Fusion for the first time. To answer the question around 38:40, if anyone's interested, there are several differences with the Famicom Disk System version. The title screen logo is much nicer-looking. The music is richer due to the extra sound channel. There's a Zelda 1-like save system instead of the password system. There is no suitless Samus. Several enemies have more sophisticated AI. And of course, the Engrish is even more hilarious.
@BagOfMagicFood
@BagOfMagicFood 9 жыл бұрын
Yeah, you know the issue he keeps complaining about, where the enemies picked a different pattern than he's used to? On FDS, those enemies can change their pattern at _any_ time. Have fun fighting through Ridley's mixture of near and far fireballs! The escape music is shorter though, and Metroid Zero Mission only uses that shorter version, despite including the cartridge version of the original game as the bonus internationally.
@JohnnyYeTaecanUktena
@JohnnyYeTaecanUktena 9 жыл бұрын
Jerkwad152 its also a Zelda 2 like save system you die to save and they used Katakana for the name and not Hiragana or Kanji so with that out of the way is the FDS version of Metroid faster or slower to speedrun? Oh and what did you mean by more sophisticated AI?
@Jerkwad152
@Jerkwad152 9 жыл бұрын
johnny elkins Yes, I mentioned the save system. :3 As for the AI, several enemies have more patterns that they can do than the NES version. For example, the hoppers on the ceiling in the NES can hop either high or low when you enter the room, but not both. In the FDS version, they can hop high, low, long or short whenever they want. The FDS version would probably be slightly slower due to a couple of load screens and the tougher enemies.
@JohnnyYeTaecanUktena

Jerkwad152 Now that is really cool that there is a Version difference for FDS and NES and i have played both Versions one by the Eshop and i own the FDS with that Version and i say that the FDS Version feels easier but i have not beat ether Versions yet i do plan on beating the FDS one thou and sorry for this comment being so long. And one more thing the reason why i mention Zelda 2 is because not much people have played it i also got that for the FDS.

Don't know if anyone will ever read this, but I do know how enemy spawning works in Metroid. Each 16 tile x 15 tile screen designates each enemies for that screen to be used in one of the six enemy slots the engine uses. If the enemy slot is marked as in use when a screen is generated, the enemy intended for that slot in the new screen isn't created. In Brinstar's vertical shafts, the same screen is used over and over again, so any enemies that are in use when you reach the middle of each vertical screen aren't spawned in the next. When you destroy an enemy, if it leaves a pickup, that pickup is stored in the enemy slot, so if the pickup is still present when a new screen is generated, the enemy for that slot is again not spawned on the new screen. Enemies are the only in-game objects that are spawned in this manner (having a designated slot for each enemy). Certain enemies (the divers that don't check for collisions) are not generated as regular enemies, and are defined by map position, not by screen definition. Enemies can also be designated by map position for the same reason, and use slots that none of the surrounding screens use in most cases, though there are a few exceptions.

I think it all began going down the fucking drain when they decided to ban Bonesaw for putting on the funniest show I've ever seen at a GDQ, shit had me legit rolling, big ups to Patty and Bonesaw and of course Owen Wilson and American Airlines for bringing the good times damn the torpedoes. 42:45 He talks about pallet swaps. If you just go through the high jump room the intended way, and then after exploring lower norfair exit the area the same way he does at 26:42, the game will be pallet swapped. The purple bubble area that he exits into will be a green area. The big purple bubbles on the way to Ridley will be red/pink. When you go back brinstar that area will be blue as he mentions, but the starting area that is supposed to be blue will be gold. If you aren't real familar with the game you probably didn't notice that the pallet was wrong for his run through lower norfair, that area is supposed to green, but it's purple in the video because he took the back way in.

For people who don't watch a lot of these they might not like BlueGlass because of he's a bit talkative and his voice which is a dumb reason to not like someone. The reason fans, as well as myself, don't like him is because he's kinda rude and makes himself the center attention. Take Super Metroid for example, he made Kosmicd move over so he could sit on the couch, the whole run he had to lean over the runners shoulder just to see the screen. And Blueglass didn't know the runner, but he talked the entire time even though it wasn't his run and he didn't know the people running and all he was talking about was what other runners do, they were actually annoyed by him. He also laughed his ass off when a runner died on a really hard run in Super Meat Boy, he's kind of a douchebag.

DocHollowDay I can understand why certain people don't like him. Still, . . .liking someone(or not) should have no impact on the way said person is treated. This life is going to be full of people we don't get along with. The world doesn't rotate on its axis around us. If someone annoy's you, then just smile and take them aside and let them know how their behavior is putting your panties in a bunch. If your panties stay bunched, then avoid the person. As for the runs you mention. These runs don't seem like they are extremely serious. No world records are expected. It is a casual forum with lots of people coming and going and talking as well. So I can't and won't call someone a "douchebag" under those circumstances. Cheers

societyofsin Those runs aren't serious? Sitting for hours on end eyes glued to the TV trying to do a game the fastest they possibly can... isn't serious? You didn't watch those runs did you? It wasn't casual laughing and having a good time, he was the only person to laugh when he died on Super Meat Boy. And the Super Metroid run was submitted in for a world record because Zoast actually did a damn good time. They even said so after his run. But they aren't considered important to you... I can see why you think his behavior is acceptable, you're just like him. A douche. Who takes nothing serious. These runners take these runs very seriously. They practice hours on end. And they do not enjoy having their hard work laughed at. And as for your "If someone annoy's you, then just smile and take them aside" please tell me what fantasy world do you live in where you can phase through your computer screen and magically show up at the places (and times) these runs are being recorded? "liking someone(or not) should have no impact on the way said person is treated" What elementary school guidance counselor are you quoting on that one? If someone is treating others wrongful and being an asshole, your advice... take it and smile. I hope you don't have kids. It's also worth noting that Blueglass is totally right about the amount of memory allocated by Metroid for the purpose of tracking the player's gameplay time. It has a memory block allocated that's actually sufficient to track your time well into decades. Also, the reason that you can change room spawns has to (if I remember correctly) do with the fact that certain memory blocks are re-used and not emptied after data is written to them for a single use.

And one final comment, Kraid and Ridley don't use the same enemy fire routines that dragons use, but instead fill enemy slots with their shots, and they always use the first enemy slot. This is why the respawning enemies on the screen with the fake Kraid won't appear as long as fake Kraid is there (respawning enemies use the same enemy spawning logic as normal single spawn enemies). Although the respawning logic uses an additional set of objects, the enemies they spawn are normal enemies, so stating that only normal enemies spawn in specific slots per screen or map position is still true. One last point of curiosity, Fake Kraid is actually tougher than real Kraid, since it is a 'hard' Kraid and the real Kraid has the default number of hit points. Ridley also uses the default number of hit points.

Wow, such a difference between watching a run from a few years ago compared to now. It's far more laid back and compared to how big GDQ has gotten now. It's still awesome, but just not the same. A huge audience in the back just can sometimes take away from the run nowadays.

What's the trick to the screen wrap at 18:20? I've only gotten it to work once. Every other time I've tried it I either ended up going through the door where I started or getting stuck.

dude I can't even get the screen wrap trick at or around 9:30. is it something to do with sound? he mentions having to listen closely around this period
@dovregubben78
@dovregubben78 8 жыл бұрын
No, you shouldn't need sound to do the screen wrap to get the ice beam. I've done it with the volume muted numerous times. You just have to make sure you tap the up button immediately after the down button. I usually two hand the d-pad for that. If you don't have the timing right you'll get stuck as a ball in a wall.
@dovregubben78

Oh, and also make sure you start out near the right edge of the door. If you're too far left you won't be able to get out of the wall at all.

Just make sure you cut open a missile container or a miniboss with that sword, otherwise any Metroid you cut open that would lay down a missile fill-up will freeze the game.

@Your_Degenerate
@Your_Degenerate 9 жыл бұрын
The best I can tell from a quick read is that within each pixel are the basic colors that it can show up as. Subpixels takes advantage of making some of those less apparent. It gives the effect of having a higher resolution to some degree. How this applies to gaming exactly I'm not certain other than alignment and timing.
