Keith Hernandez's number should not be retired 1. He's not a Hall of Famer 2. He only played seven seasons with the mets. Let's be honest, the only number the mets should have retired is Tom Seaver

Absolutely my favorite Met of all time. He turned this franchise around with his leadership when he came over in June 15,1983. Starting in spring training of 84 into 85 and 86. Other pieces were added to build the 1986 championship team but, without Keith, there is no 1986 championship. A leader on the field and in the clubhouse and even on off days with binding with the young players. Guys like Darryl and Doc and even Kevin Mitchell looked up to him. What a class act snd well deserving !!! “17” Congrats snd well deserved !

Yankee fan here. But my dad is a huge Mets fan and always loved the way Keith played the game. Unfortunately I was a tad too young to see him play but this speech was amazing. Well deserved! #Ke17h

Keith, it was a privilege and honor to watch you all those years in a Met uniform. I was a teenager during those glory years, so the moments and memories seem more impactful with each passing year because of where I was in my life at that time and how much it meant to me to have you and the Mets in my life as I struggled to find my way. You were and will always be my all time favorite baseball player. Thank you for taking that leap of faith and heeding Frank Cashen’s words that the best was yet to come. What a ride it was.

Very Hard to attain Greatness without dedicated, supportive, and Loving Parents. All the Great ones seem to always mention their parents. Keith is no exception. Let that be one of his greatest lessons that he taught and highlighted in this speech. Read his book! I wish I had a father like his. Such a blessing and true gift for your flesh and blood.

I remember hearing of the trade in 1983. I was down because Blackman had been sent to AAA to play 3B and he was threatening to quit baseball. The trade was the first positive news that early summer. It rejuvenated everyone! But Keith hated coming to NY - like Richie Hebner hated it in 1979. Credit Rusty Staub for helping Keith acclimate to NY. So thankful he resigned instead of becoming a FA.

I watched his first game as a met in montreal back in june of '83. back then, just to see a famous player newly in a met uniform was a big deal. it was a ho hum game and i read later he said he cried in the shower after that game because he was so bummed about having been traded. never give up on life, it twists and turns and things can still work out. the mid eighties mets is the best group of guys to make up a baseball team. yeah they did their fair share of drugs and alcohol, but they had a great combination of good play and different personalities. strong at every position, everyone was great in their role.

I believe when he played Nelson Doubleday was still the principal owner. Keith Hernandez was not brought back following the 1989 season because his skills had diminished considerably. Plus, the had Dave Magadan who was younger ready to take over 1B. Try as you might, you can not blame this on the Wilpons.

@@albertodelrio69 when you broadcast on tv, there is no "crowd" in front of you, as you can not see who you are broadcasting to. He was speaking in front of nearly 50,000 for probably the first time in his life, with all eyes on him. Not to mention his close friends and family were feet away. If you don't get nervous for a situation like that, you're not human.
