I just listened to Mariana interview life & health insurance agents 16:46 Medicare works if you are in the states. However, if you have a heart attack or a serious injury while in Mexico, it’s recommended that you have a nice nest egg that you can draw from in the event you have to go to the Mexico Hospitals. They want a deposit or no treatment & payment in full once you are released. $25k & up was mentioned.

I've been living at Playas de Tijuana just over the border from San Diego for nearly 5 years. It's another world despite being just over the border and a charming little town.. Now I'm thinking of moving deeper in Mexico and hearing Molly's story helps. She certainly lives very well and pays for it. $1500 a month is top dollar but then Playa del Carmen has a very upscale reputation. Thanks for sharing your story.

@@Mmmkay10 he lives in Playa de Tijuana, much different... it is on the beach to the west and outside of Tijuana proper. I live just down the coast from there in another beach town called Rosarito. Many Americans are moving to that area from California because comparatively speaking it is super cheap but still close enough proximity to the border that you get the same weather as San Diego. California's repressive laws, crumbling infrastructure, high taxes and cost of living make it unaffordable for most people these days, and so moving just across the border makes sense. For example, I live in Rosarito in a beachfront property that would cost millions of dollars in the U.S. But I only pay $1500 USD a month for rent and my condo is a fully furnished three bedroom, two bath 2000 sq/ft unit with an unparalleled view of the ocean... the swimming pool is literally on the beach and I can see San Diego from my balcony.

There’s a difference between Yucatán where Playa del Carmen is and Playas Tijuana which is Baja. I love the Yucatán, went 15 years ago for the first time but now it’s pretty crowded. When I spent time all over the Baja Peninsula (i used to live in So. California), the Baja was seen as more like Alaska to Mexicans. In other words, it’s more remote, rugged. My ex used to go motorcross racing there. Playa del Carmen to me is very touristy, be very careful about buying real estate there. Not all properties are built with gringo standards in mind…not that they should, but don’t complain about stinky bathrooms because the sinks were not installed with P-traps. I would take this video with a grain of salt. Visit not just 1 to 3 months before buying but visit during different times of the year.

Chetumal because it has 170,000 people, so it's not too big and it's not too small, and every store you can think of in Mexico is here. Plus was soon to have a new Maya train at the end of the year, which is like Amtrak and I hate taking the bus. So it will be great taking the train to the airport in Cancun. Plus 20 minutes away to the border with Belize, everything I want is here that's why I live here

Very nice interview, your comments are very close to a reality, you mentioned that you are willing to pay the "high" rent to live close to the ocean and have nice amenities included pet friendly. I like to mention that rents are from $10,000 - 40K or more, depending on your needs. I'm from the San Diego area and partially living in Playa Del Carmen, I like it because it's very walkable town with basically all the amenities of a big city and not in a need of a car, taxis are cheaper 2-3 blocks away from the tourist 5th Ave. Also a lot of culture to learn related to the Mayans near by. Good for you Molly!
@MexicoRelocationGuide
@MexicoRelocationGuide Жыл бұрын
Hi Jorge! Thanks for sharing. Yeap, Molly is right- she is paying for the luxury of being feet away from a beautiful beach and ocean. Some people are outraged that her rent is $37,000 MXN a month. But you can understand why when you consider her location and that her condo is brand new with upgrades. It would be very hard to find a similar rental close to a beautiful beach anywhere in the world for less than $1500 USD a Month. Yes you can live on less than that in Mexico, but you will have to compromise your location or your rental unit.

I think her budget is much more than 2,300.00. As of February 3 when I arrived in Playa one dollar was about 18.60 pesos using your credit card ( Bank rate) from the states to make purchases. ATM withdrawal is about the same. The rate to exchange your dollar on the streets is about 17.60. As of today February 25, 2023 the rate to withdraw money from a ATM is about 18.30. Her apartment alone with this rates is 2,021.00 dollars. The food at the restaurant she was eating was probably 20-25 dollars. Taxi in centro are more costly than 60 pesos, they usually won’t take you anywhere for at least 120 pesos especially if they see you are a tourist. So please do your research well, I think the budget presented here is a bit deceptive.

The exchange rate has certainly changed since we made this video. But it’s still around $2800 a month for all her expenses. She doesn’t eat out everyday. She eats out 1x week

I am now living in Costa Rica. I have lived in several places in SE Asia and Central America. I have visited Playa Del Carman. It's Ok. That said I have seen a lot of videos on relocation this lady is spot on with her assessment of living there. $2500 is a good number. Seen websites that state "Live on a $1000 a month" In my experience anywhere in the world (Except Bali) you exist on a $ 1,000-a-month you do not Live.
@MexicoRelocationGuide
@MexicoRelocationGuide Жыл бұрын
Thanks Michael! Although i kindly disagree that you only exist in Mexico on $1000 a month. I know several people who are having the time of their lives on only $1000 USD a month- but they probably don't live in Playa del Carmen. More likely they live in a smaller city like Atlixco, Chapala, Cholula, Cuernavaca or somewhere like this. But agree, that in Playa del Carmen right by the ocean, you probably won't be able to afford it on $1000 a month

Hola Mariana! I spent some time and figured out my total monthly budget considering every single thing I pay money for is under $1200us per month ($1150us) That's everything! Even down to the $15 (actually $14.86) that I just paid $535.15 in full to extend my Temporary Resident Visa for three more years. I already paid the year in full for my Mexican and American car insurance including registration, my Traveling Mailbox service, Norton computer security and my extended visa. So the actual breakdown of money that I withdraw and spend each month is around $1020us. I added an additional $30us to my already ample food budget I had figured just to go over the $1000us mark. I easily live and eat like a Rey very affordably without skimping on anything! .....Things could change, I am single so if some girlfriend finds me (I am not yet any good at flirting in Spanish so I just smile) expect these figures to drastically change!! ....BTW-If you see some goofy blond haired, hazel eyed surfer gringo always smiling say "Hola!" Mucha suerte desde hermosa Ensenada!

I would say Playa Del Carmen is almost perfect, except for the humidity! Lol But no place is perfect. I tried going every winter for six years , renting a studio this year and coming November to Jan but it was so so humid it was unbearable. Also don’t be surprised if they tear the house down next to you and build 25 units . Happened to me . Just keep it in mind . The prices have doubled in the last six years. I do love the beach, when their isnt the seaweed. Ir is extremely walkable and very attractive people visiting from all over the world. Many close places to visit like Holbox island. Can you tell im torn?

I spent 2 glorious weeks in Akumal Sur before some greedy gut built a large hotel on the beach. Mexico is a beautiful country! The gated community was gorgeous! I never got gated thing, though. All you have to do is walk the beach. Anyway, a beautiful, quiet hang. People were great! The water was stunning. Great snorkeling. The food, and margaritas were the bomb!!! Great service. Gorgeous sunrises, and sunsets. Perfect weather. Gorgeous wildlife, and sounds. Loved Miguel, my guide! Loved my Casita! Loved Gabriella, owner. LOVED it ALL! I've not traveled much, however I have throughly enjoyed every single second of every single hour of each of my vaca! Such a privilege! Playa was cool, vibrant, and festive. Enjoy your new life! Happy for you!

It's very common for our customers to wait until their kids are off to go to College. But the one thing I would caution you is that the residency requirements get harder every year so just something to think about. Plus, you don't have to live in Mexico to remain a resident, so if you are planning your future something to consider 😊

Today (Feb 28) it's 66 and sunny. Nice in the sun and cool in the shade. I have a place about a half mile walk from me that has the best fish tacos con todo for $27mx or around $1.58us! That's at todays exchange rate of 17.05. Hmmm...I think I'll go there now! Buena suerte!

Very nice. Appreciate the info. *** I see you drink the BEST beer! Dos Equis Amber! I have been drinking it forever, but sometimes Amber is hard to find. Have been going to Mexico since the 50s (western Mexico) & planed to retire there but stuff happens. Now, I will coming down to Yucatan to check out Rivera Maya & Merida/Progreso areas. Have done the usual cruises that stopped in the Maya/Cozumel but have never spent "real" time, so that I could research moves. I definitely think the Maya is a good option - if I can find a smaller home with some land & fenced for my dogs, close, but out of the city, that is safe & with a mixture of locals & expats. I am watching a lot of these videos for info & yours was very informative. Thanks Tom

Yes, besides the fact that there are a lot of corruption and some risks of safety, I love Mexico! I have a few condos in Mexico but not in PDC. But I would probably put Playa Del Carmen one of the best places that I've visited! It's near Cancun and Tulum! It's a fun city to party and also enjoy a beautiful beach and food! Probably my next destination to purchase a condo when the USD currency gains its momentum again!

Awesome info, thanks! I currently spend about a month in the Caribbean each year. I'm about 6 years away from partial residency (2-4 months per year), and 13 years away from even more residency (6+ months). My main concern had always been healthcare, but what I've found is that excellent ex-pat health insurance is only about $500 a month. And like you, once I hit 65 I'll just fly to the States for the big stuff. I also plan to move around more. Maybe Playa or Puerto Aventuras one year, and the Dominican Republic or Costa Rico the next, split the time between several places, etc.

I live in Kentucky in the United States and $150 electric bill is the highest electric bill I would get and only one time of year, in the winter. My lowest electric bill was $60 in October, our taxes on our property is only $150 a month water $60, garbage $8. Car insurance full coverage two vehicles $110. Homeowners insurance$80, mortgage $271 a month. There are no taxes on groceries in Kentucky. Social security is not taxed in Kentucky. Over-55 you get a homestead exemption which cut your taxes on your property. I split all the bills with my husband, we have $400 a month a piece in bills, after the house is paid off and the car it will only be $250 a month each in bills.

PDC has become ridiculously expensive. Lived here two years and last night went for dinner. Had 2 glasses of cheap wine, 2 bottles of water, a tuna tartar, 1 shrimp dish and one tuna taco. $1200 pesos at a restaurant I had to drive to 10 minutes our of the center. That was not fancy AT ALL. That's $73 and that's nothing. Rent $1300 for a tiny studio in the middle of the city a month and virtually no beach left. Maybe 30-40 meters at low tide. $2,500 is if you eat at truck stands and eat at home 95% of the time and live in a tiny old, run down place. Can't wait to move to another part of Mexico, that actually feels and looks like Mexico.

I stayed in Playa Del Carmen about ten years ago for 3 weeks at a nice resort on a cliff. Can't remember the name. Loved being there except the cops at the time were robbing every person that wasn't Mexican. A couple I met from Germany was returning their rental, and the cops pulled them over for a broken tail light. When the guy got out, there was no broken light, and he 6asked where? The cop took his club and smashed the rear light and said, right there. The man now understood not to say anything except asked how much is the ticket, the cop answered, "How much you got? The cop then got pissy and said you can pay me or go to jail for resisting. Obviously the man didn't want jail so gave the cop 100 dollars. The cop took his wallet and took 700 more emptying his wallet. The cop also said, go ahead and report this, and you will never see jail. Even though it was years ago, I still won't go there again. I've had several friends over the last few years tell me it really hasn't changed and could be even worse. I applaud you for the courage to live there and wish you luck

You rarely hear people telling these real stories. My ex in laws were outside Rosarito. The husband used to go to San Diego. The federalies would take his food. She slept with a gun when he was in the states. No one in any of these videos mention you don't own anything in Mexico.... I drew the line going there finally when we would see trucks of guys with guns driving up and down Rosarito main street. I said NO, IM NEVER COMING AGAIN. I heard one to many first hand stories. Also, no one ever mentions when the Mexican government took all the land and money from the retirees not that long ago. I wish her luck but reality is more than sun. You don't mess with the police in any town in Mexico. I know I will get negative comments on this post but the majority of people reading these blogs have never spent any time with locals to hear the truth. Good luck all.
