@@vhfgamer Definitely not 34's lol (Easiest way to tell: The 34 has a cilindrical barrel shroud, the 42 has it's iconic squared barrel shroud). It's just an MG-42 with heavy bolt and return springs. (Fire rate could be reduced to 900rpm with the heaviest bolt)

Not a lot went to plan on Omaha beach. And I firmly believe the only reason it was taken was because it was Americans who were less experienced than the British or Canadians. More experienced soldiers would not have tried to advance through such a hellfire of lead without major armour or artillery support. But in that situation where the tanks had drowned from being launched too far out and all the artillery had landed far inland the only way to survive is advance. I commend the Americans. That was a very tough landing.

The MG-42 itself though would still be a terrifyingly effective weapon though. Any machine gun that powerful will annihilate a charging force if properly fired. While some warfare elements have changed, others have mostly stayed the same...as the Nagorno-Karabakh and Ukraine wars have shown us.

This is the only fault with this scene. Spielberg paints the Germans as psychopathic and bloodthirsty, but these men of the Fatherland would have been absolutely terrified seeing all those Americans coming to kill them. Firing those MG42s was more a desperate will to survive than a calculated act of murder.

A surviving German soldier of the Omaha Beach landing; Heinrich Severloh claimed to have fired his MG42 for almost 9 straight hours (maybe around 13,500 rounds), and as hard as he tried to fire sparingly, letting the weapon cooldown, after that many rounds the machine gun just fell into pieces, but not before the hot barrel set the grass around him on fire
