They are obviously fairly different cars, but which one would you choose?

The MG because it has manual controls and is less tablet focused. Both are good looking cars, though.

@@briangriffiths114 yah, the weird touch screen controls for everything, would be slightly dodgy and unsafe on the move, its bad enough controlling the audio on the android auto on my corrolla... and why would you use the cars in built satnav over the mobile phone version? its trash in my toyota aswell..

I'd be leaning towards the VW, simply because I've bought VW's before, both new and used. The MG is an unknown quantity to me, although that in itself isn't a necessarily a bad thing. A few more years will give potential buyers more of an indication regarding reliability, and how good the dealerships are.....

I paid £24.6k for a brand new long range MG5. At £38k the ID3 is way over 50% more expensive and is at that point in a completely different sector.

Looking forward to seeing the revised version of the MG5.....

I'd have the MG5. More space, easier controls to operate when on the move, better value, 7 year warranty on the whole car. In my mind the MG's in general are the best ev's per £ around.

I shall be passing those Superchargers tomorrow on my way up from Kent! Even if they were the same price, I would still choose the MG5, even over the iD4. But I could be persuaded to consider the Cupra Born over the MG5, or the Skoda Enyaq over the iD4. But, I bought the MG5 in December, after ordering it in October and for almost any other EV, I would still be waiting now! At the moment, based on price, I would go for the MG5 facelift when it arrives in bulk next year......... if I had the cash!?

Thanks, you get what you pay for, the VW is definitely a superior car, but you pay for it. My big worry with MG is the unknown future reliability, service, dealerships etc. VW is relatively a known company, they soiled their pants with dieselgate, but they have a long history of reliability and desirable cars. If I had a limited budget, then the MG looks fine for me. If a bigger budget then Kia Niro.

Newer seen ID3 without the “eyes”. Having now owned an ID3 with full specs for a while, there are three things I think are must. The Ergo seats, Matrix lights, and the panoramic roof.
@nickthorley12 жыл бұрын
I know you cant put the roof box on the roof but they do the bike carier for the tow hitch and you can strap a box to that. May make reversing into a bay a little harder but for occasional use, it may be worth considering

MG was an old british brand, but today it is completely chinese. How is the perception of it in the UK today? Is it still seen as british? In Germany we of course would think twice before we buy a chinese car (if the price compares), but I suppose that is not the case elsewhere.
@OurEvUK2 жыл бұрын
Very good question! As someone from the UK who isn't really 'into' cars, I didn't really have any impression of MG. I was fully aware that it was a Chinese brand (SAIC) with a UK friendly badge on it. I don't think any of the traditional British brands are still going, so buying a 'homemade' car wasn't an option (obviously there are cars made here but not by UK companies). I suppose in Germany you have multiple options to buy real German cars, so I would imagine they are much more popular? A lot of the tech that we buy is Chinese (or at least partly Chinese), so I don't really have any problems with it. But some of the English translations in the car are a little bit iffy!

Why do you comparison the „old“ MG5 with the ID3? Compare apple’s with apple’s! 😢
@adammilward28202 жыл бұрын
Your nav seems to be a bit slower than my ZS ev nav. It’s sad the installed navigation gets a bad wrap. I tend to prefer using the installed navigation yes it lacks live traffic & the up to date maps( even though with all the road works in my region still means Apple & Google maps are not up to date with all the new changes to highway 🛣 interchanges.) The main reason I prefer it, it seems to have the clearest directions when in city environments for the correct lane to be in. I have had a few missed turns and longer routes using Apple/Waze/Google & I have found A better Route planner to be horrible. I check ABRP if I need it I have it on the phone to display battery % and just stick to default maps.
@OurEvUK2 жыл бұрын
It's possible I might be due an update, or maybe the ZS just has different internals. I can definitely understand your point of view, it's completely usable. I think I'm just so used to Google maps and the live traffic updates etc, having used it for years in cars without built in satnavs.
@Olivarus2382 жыл бұрын
Aha! At last someone who shares my opinions/experience with Waze, Google and ABRP! I've used the TomTom app with good results (paying for Live Traffic) but now my old phone is having difficulty with GPS location and this week's 600 miles round trip is going to reply on the MG's satnav, which does use a few quirky routes! It does have a setting for Congestion, but I don't know what it does? I've activated it for tomorrow's trip, so may end up near Aberdeen instead of Chester 🤔
@londonwestman12 жыл бұрын
I actually used the built-in satnav on my i3 yesterday for my new regular route and it took me a better, shorter route than Google. Google prefers using larger roads whereas the i3 has three options for how direct you want to go. However you might need to use both as Google has a better chance of seeing road closures. (Seem to maybe as many as twice the number of road closures now compared to twenty years ago, I'd guess.)

Great video! Just one thought: I think considering the gulf in price difference the MG could have got 2 or maybe 3 points for that
@OurEvUK2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I did consider that!
@Brian-om2hh2 жыл бұрын
I'm not entirely sure about that. Given the average VW buyer, they probably wouldn't be naturally inclined to look too hard at the less costly end of the market. They usually go with VW for a reason... Pretty much the same reason a Merc or BMW buyer wouldn't look at a Mondeo or a Skoda Superb. That said, the current MG's do look remarkable value for money. But there's still that niggle in the back of my mind, wondering how the longevity might be...... Over the past couple of years I've seen odd videos from the owners of earlier MG ZS's, complaining about corrosion on their 2 year old (and sometimes newer) cars........
@OurEvUK2 жыл бұрын
I think you're right, the MG's are going to appeal to a different type of buyer. Yep, I'll be keeping an eye out for any signs of corrosion!

Infotainment, we never had it before, we lived without it, I wouldn't even know how to use it, all I would buy a car for is to get from A to B, I don't like all these screen things, it's like using a mobile phone but using a phone is illegal, then there's all the stuff for phones, I wouldn't have a technical phone, the days of getting in a car and driving from place to place and using common sense seem to have gone and everyone seems to want technology to do everything for them, as much as I like the look of the Model S Tesla, I don't think I'd be able to operate half of the gizmos in there as I don't understand the screen stuff, I prefer simple and straightforward, easy to use and understand, after all, I only use a car to get from home to work and back again, even the public charging systems are too complicated for the likes of people like me, cards, memberships, credit cards, it's all gone overboard, I would seriously consider an electric vehicle if everything wasn't so complicated, and so expensive, I own my own car, I can pay in cash for my diesel, I don't want to carry cards around, I don't want or need to be baffled by all the technology, luckily I'm one foot in the grave now, I won't have to drive around worrying about what it's costing me or if I have the funds to cover my journey, I know that fossil fuel prices have gone through the roof right now, but so have energy prices, but I know that I have spent whatever on diesel as the money is no longer in my pocket, that's what I would like to see with electric chargers and a display of the unit price as we see on the pumps, electric vehicles and everything to do with them is far too advanced for older people like myself for them to be viable options. If I was to buy one of those two vehicles, the MG would be more to my liking

Impossible to do at this stage, but I'd be interested to see a score for things like paint finish and general bodywork work quality, and residual values in, say, 6 or 7 years...... That might be rather revealing...... Past performance in this respect might put VW ahead here....

@@robertdurn2320 it is short but there are some others. Bodelwyddan services have chargers both sides. Bangor services have 1 charger. Morrisons Bangor, Lidl Conwy, Morrisons Holyhead all have charge points. Not enough really for the number of EVs on the road today.

Kia/Hyundai do seem more efficient than some..... Incidentally, I just read an article about someone whom left a review of the Lake District on Tripadvisor. They complained there were "too many Lakes". Another moaned about how busy it was, and about the lack of parking. I guess that can happen if you choose to visit a site with World Heritage status....... A lady from Essex once asked me if the weather here was always poor. I gave my usual reply, by saying "we get Winter here, followed by 6 months of bad weather"...... and "it only ever rains on days ending in AY" She appeared totally confused.....

A recent Australian Strategic Policy Institute report indicates that the Chinese government “has facilitated the mass transfer of Uyghur and other ethnic minority citizens from the far west of Xinjiang,” to work in factories across the country. '“Under conditions that strongly suggest forced labor, Uyghurs are working in factories that are in the supply chains of at least 82 well-known global brands in the technology, clothing and automotive sectors." Totally agree these practices are shameful, but unfortunately not isolated to EVs. For example, Apple and Sony supply chains are also shocking, as well as much of the textiles industry as you say. Needs a much wider solution than just looking at EVs IMO.
