As someone else said, the scene works because it comes after 2 almost back to back boss fights. The most recent in this case being the fight with The End which takes awhile to complete even if you do it right. So this moment acts as a moment of rest and relaxation. You aren't trying to not get caught, you aren't getting shot at, you aren't fighting off spec ops, you're just climbing a ladder. Its like an intermission during a wonderful play.

back in 04 i was surprised by this scene. It’s supposed to be a way to hide a 2 min loading screen but transcended what it was supposed to do. I remember this sequence more than any other part of the game to this day

This game scene is so well made and thought of. For one, you really feel for Big Boss and his isolation. A sense of longing and truly being alone (The echo and accapela add to the effect) Once of my favourite touches is that the song ends as he exits the ladder, followed by a whispered "snake eater" and the howling wind. Truly a solo soldier. Haunting, beautiful, poetic. MAN true games craftmanship!

@@dubduboverlord5095 It had to be because Playstation 2 had like 32mb of RAM at the time with additional 4mb of vRam... this is how developers load the next part of the game (in the background) while the player is doing something simple like this, it allows for seamless gameplay between scenes and rendering of them.

I realize why it's so intense. This is the climax of the game and, much like any good story, as you get further and further into it, higher and higher, the buildup starts to give everything more impact. Much like the ladder, to fall or fail now, would be to lose soo much progress and value. But you must climb, neverthless, to see things to their end. Hence why the ladder climb, albeit mundane, is so impactful... or it could just be a snake and ladders joke, take your pic.

This isn't the climax of the game, it's about half way through the game, maybe slightly less. Basically the first half is in jungle and the second is in desert and this helped load the game assets whilst not breaking the flow of the game. Also, more importantly, just before Snake climbs the ladder he killed The End. After the battle, he speaks with Para-Medic and they both discuss love and home etc. then you start to climb. The acapella version + SFX of wind etc. creates a sense of sadness, being alone, loneliness in the battlefield etc. and I think the game dev's wanted players to 'Feel for Big Boss' in this isolated state. Brilliant use of a loading screen.

I had never played the metal gear series until about two weeks ago, after playing 1, I was hooked, I binged 2 through 4 in a week. It was at this very scene, this reprive from the barrage of countless foes and obstacles put in your way, that I realized that I wasn't just playing a random video game vomited out for easy money. This is a masterpiece. The fact this 2 minute clip, could be so epic when you are just pushing up on an analogue stick, is a true testament to the weight of every single element Hideo Kojima put into these games. Every note in a musical piece, carefully crafted, every movement, mechanic and cinematic lovingly and expertly crafted. On a side note, I genuinely cannot remember the last time I cried. I was wailing like an animal at the end of this game. This series will hold a very special place in my heart for absolutely putting every other game I have ever played a notch down. A quality series like this is a once in a lifetime experience, the standard for excellence, and I would do anything to play it for the first time again and relive all the countless epic moments riddled within these games. Dear Hideo Kojima, You're pretty good.

Gotta say, if this was done in any other game the ladder climb would have been annoying, slow and a waste of time. But here...its atmospheric, builds tension for what is to come and kinder haunting.

One of the things that really adds up to that moment is that you have just defeated The End before this moment. In the first time his fight was very tough and long for me, it was a very tense moment (not to mention he is one of the best boss fights ever imo, very unique).

G eneral Insomnia I rather disagree. It's very reminiscent of Roger Moore bond films. Which felt very goofy and had some of the silliest gadgets bond had ever used. It's shlocky at times at least to me on purpose. That's how that era of spy flicks were. But Kojima decided to also give us some solid plot elements. It's the strange pairing of the two that to me really makes the game shine. There's a constant sense of Kojima winking at you at any time during the game and then there's a sense of oh something serious might happen at any time. The games more free base abstract story telling lends to a tone of non anticipation. Never in a million years when I first played this game did I expect this ladder sequence to happen. But it did. It invokes a sense of a lonely hero going down the final path to his ultimate goal. He's climbing a literal mountain to get there. It's a cathartic on the nose moment. Much like Kojima himself it feels tacky but masterfully done.

The way you explain it is the same way I feel about One Piece. The mix of serious and silly is such a good combination that for some reason makes it really easy to get immersed and care about a fictional world. Maybe it's a Japanese thing because I can't think of anything like those things from English media.

If this game has tonal issues, so does Chop Suey!, Jurassic Bark, and so on. How do I take something seriously if it takes itself so seriously? I love when Colonel or Zero tell me to "press the X button" and how in the first chapter of mgs4, you get Snake's monologue and you meet Drebin with his diaper monkey: my black ops commander should be able to tell me exactly how I should maneuver; it isnt more immersive to sacrifice that, just to keep the 4th wall up. And Drebin is anyone who is not accountable for taking advantage of the war machine, who keep it going. He could be anyone, he doesnt care if I think he's goofy, I like the m4 he's peddling. Yall just need to appreciate the monkey with a diaper for what it is, smh. It's so cool when you see shit like the alternate history with nukes and metal gears, the frogs and other spec ops xmen dudes, the patriots/illuminati and typical rogue Russian spetsnaz (same as Ultranationalists in MW2) in the same story. So good. Anything can happen. Snake's a legend.

Nobody mentioned the true purpose of this ladder: pacing. It comes just after the battle with The End, which is considered one of the longest and most demanding Boss battles in gaming history. The ladder is also an atmosferic, poetic, narrative device as you guys are saying, of course, but it is mostly designed as down time to let the player release tension and meditate about what he or she achieved and what's about to come. It also marks a clear separation between both halfs of the game, so when you finally reach the top and (when you leave this room) you encounter yourself at the top of the mountains, it really makes you feel that you're progressing. It's basically very well designed downtime, and that's why so many people have fond memories of this moment. But of course you need to have a connection as a player (not spectator) with the game in order to have those feelings. Is not so much about "pretentiousness" as some claim, but about designing the player experience. It's a well executed design device. Maybe more to some, but never less.

3 years too late but, what the hell yknow. I was about 16 playing this on a very tiny 13 inch CRT Tube TV back in 2004. After my best friend and I walked down to the KFC at night, coming back home and filling our guts with chicken and seeing this scene - it was something that never left my mind well until the ripe old age of 32.

I think this part works so well because you have just spent the best part of an hour beating the end. It's one of the most unique boss battles that breaks all conventions of boss fights and at this point you're probably reflecting on how crazy the last hour (or more) has been, trying to beat the end. Then while you're thinking during this nice little interlude, the theme starts playing. It is among my favourite moments of the MGS series

I think this part works so well not just because of The End battle, but because you're just beginning the second half of the game and you've gone through so much... The Boss defected, Sokolov is gone again, learned about the Shagohod, you've met Eva, Ocelot, defeated already more than a half of the Cobra Unit... At this part, I always imagine that Snake is thinking about all of this. Really, such a great scene :)

I remember playing this game really late. Into my early twenties and playing it blind after MGS V was released. I decided the hype for this series warranted a play. This game was always stressful my first play through. Constantly trying to survive and find proper equipment and avoid all the baddies. I had a very tense fight with The End. It lasted quite some time as I worked my way through that area trying not to be sniped. I was a bit drained after it. And stumbling into this ladder casually before realizing it was THIS long. I really enjoyed it and it somehow sticks out to me as a scene to remember weirdly enough... just climbing a ladder in a game FULL of weird and interesting moments. The fact that it is just the vocals and no other instrumentation makes it almost hollow; yet beautiful. A bit like that tunnel? A bit like The End's final scene.
