USS Stout (DDG-55) is a part of Task Force Odyssey Dawn, the U.S. Africa Command task force established to provide operational and tactical command and control of U.S. military forces supporting the international response to the unrest in Libya and enforcement of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1973. UNSCR 1973 authorizes all necessary measures to protect civilians in Libya under threat of attack by Qadhafi regime forces. JTF Odyssey Dawn is commanded by U.S. Navy Admiral Samuel J. Locklear, III.

@jackdavidharris I just finished looking it up, and it appears to be the Direct-Action-Penetrator (DAP) package with the AGM-114 Hellfire missiles & the M134 Door-Gunner machine gun (.50 cal) It's used for small ship interdiction (like Iranian Gunboats).

An MH-60S specifically. Knighthawk was what it was marketed as but that name has never stuck. Replaced the CH-46 in Navy service.

We used to use SH-60 seahawks for Vertrep when all the 46's were down. They worked but it didn't make sense to carry all that ASW gear onboard so they made a stripped down model to replace the 46's.

Not exactly how it happened. The MH-60S isn't much of a lifter either. It struggles with 3000 lb loads with 1 hour of fuel aboard as they are typically configured. The S is quite a bit different from the B, F, and MH60R. I flew 60B's and 60'S's in the Navy. DOD had the option to replace the 46 with another tandem rotor helicopter but chose to spend the money on the V22 for the Marines. The Army overbought 60's (aircraft ordered but not yet built). DOD decided to transfer those to the Navy. They are a modified Blackhawk with the Navy common cockpit and some other Navalized conversions but retaining the Army tailwheel. They are not a stripped down Seahawk. The civilian VERTREP program uses the EC225. MSC prefers it over the Navy anymore. Cool. Badass setup, regardless. When I was ships company on the USS Theodore Roosevelt, we would have a similar config on a Ready 5 alert status for low, slow in-bounds like another helo or small boat. The threat of a USS Cole type attack was very real, and Green Peace made several attempts to approach by boat so they could spray graffiti on the hull. Then we would sing them with 3" water hoses! Too bad they made us rescue them afterwards...

seahawk. is the window u showed the LSO or HCO since it doesn't have the help hangars... ours in equipped but this one just has landing capabilities...

Yes it is. We can and do land straight sometimes. It depends on the ship and the specific winds and such. Contrary to popular belief, hovering isn't something you can always "just do." Winds play a HUGE part in flying a helo, and you also have to consider wave-off capability. If they botch the approach and have to go around, it's easy to simply juke left off the angle to miss the ship. Also, as you can see, they were not staying long, so didn't need to line up with the hangar.

I thought Seahawks had a rear landing wheel that was mounted further forward on the bottom of the fuselage?

This model is a Knighthawk Sierra model which turns out to be one of the Army's rejects hence the farther rear tail wheel.

there is a mix of weaponry and hardpoints. Sometimes they carry hellfires, sometimes something else like a machine gun and sometimes they don't need a weapon.

M134s are miniguns. Gau-21s are M3M .50 cals. Those are M240s in the windows. Gau-21s mount in the door and we don't use them with Hellfires because it has a very limited field of view with those on. It is a DAP but unlike the Army we carry single pylon batwings.

Only on the internet, I bet. Statistics show that the percentage of internet users in the US are much higher than in most other countries, thus it's easier to find "american idiots" than idiots from other countries. The US doesn't have a monopoly on idiocy, it's extremely common everywhere else as well.
