I wasn't really keen on chopping up my carbon wing, but it's an interesting idea!

They're Miata headlight motors from a 1990-97 Miata. We never tested their maximum power but they're pretty strong. They can lift that wing at 120 mph.

It's a SPDT relay triggered by the brake lights. Provides 12v to one of the motor wires when the lights are off, 12v to the other when they're on. The logic inside the motors takes care of the rest.

Flyin' Miata thank you from what I can see the red/white wire is power, black earth, yellow and red are up and down on the motor and brake light wire will be the trigger.I will wire a 5pin solenoid off a 30amp fuse with an in-line switch to the dash so I can turn it off when not being driven spiritedly.

That's exactly how they were wired - when the brake lights came on, the wing went into air brake mode. All it took was a relay.

Well, as a Miata shop with lots of Miata parts cars, the Miata headlight motor was a pretty easy choice. You'll have to look into the Pontiac part to see if it has the same built-in control mechanism and is strong enough.

That’s been suggested many, many times. This was a proof of concept, so drilling holes in the trunk wasn’t part of the plan.

The static wing was worth 2 seconds/lap on a track with an average speed of less than 50 mph.

@@FlyinMiataVideo a higher wing will be more effective due to more dense air compressed by roof. It can extend the roofline for more straight line speed. Moving it forward closer to cg will help w cornering w/o change in cg . W no equal wing on front this setup actually reduces front cornering power as it is behind the rear axle. The above comment is counter intuitive as adding weight means the tires will have to deal w 1 more g of load x weight throughout the entire friction circle. The drag from the motors is probably negligible and i would extend the wing width to match the car width. Great start and these are simple but substantial improvements

@@dereksomeda4198 Normally the car runs a higher wing, but this prototype setup was built out of old spare parts so it's a bit lower. The front of the car has a heavily vented hood, a significant splitter and dive planes to balance out the wing. Aerodynamic balance is set up a little further back than the static weight distribution so the car's handling balance shifts forward with speed for more stability in fast corners and so I can set it up looser in tight corners to help with rotation. The wing width was chosen because that's the width these carbon fiber "Car Of Tomorrow" wings came in.
