Papa torr sounds like one of those guys who just doesn't like rotary engines 🤣 For non-car people, yea, they are absolutely terrible. I mean who the hell wants to constantly be popping their hood every other trip to the gas station to check and top off the oil? That along with ever increasing emissions requirements is what killed the rotary engine... not because it wasn't a competitive engine. As a go fast smile generator, it works pretty damn well. Also, it turns out that as a legitimately competitive racing engine, the rotary does pretty damn good job at that too.
@papatorr3669

@@quickcooper61sounds like one of those guys who just can't accept rotary reality. Had the industry dedicated a tenth of the R&D money into the German/Wankel engine that it dedicated to making piston engines more fuel efficient it might be a commercial option today. Intuitively, an engine that has parts continuously going in the same direction appears to be a superior design to a piston that moves in one direction then in the opposite direction many thousands of times per minute. Many examples of this in the market where the less efficient design won: Original Apple OS vs DOS. PC won, and PE won. (Piston Engine).

Just a note, I did my aluminum 5.3 Swap with CD009 for right at $13,000 and that was with going way overboard on the fuel system to do E85 and piecing things together. I think you can get close to $10,000 if you were to buy a donor car and part out what you don't need and get everything for the engine in one shot and not have to track down things like transmission bolts and such. But the CD009 is my favorite shifting trans. So it works out pretty well.

Still gotta love the K swap. They can make solid power and I love the rev happy nature of those engines. I think over 400 hp from the V8 in the small, semi floppy chassis of a Miata is a little too much. Obviously, as you said, if you throw enough money at it you can make it work really well (wider tires, massive chassis bracing, maybe a cage, etc)
@HotboiEngineering
@HotboiEngineering 4 жыл бұрын
K swap all the way. Turbo/ high HP BP is expensive and temperamental. But a mild turbo setup to 250hp is the cheapest option. LS is extremely expensive and requires heavy driveline mods Rotary is expensive and temperamental. K swap is relatively cheap, reliable, easy 250hp (limit of driveline), insane aftermarket and great online support.

@@devandrasimanjuntak1646 well it's built like the old air-cooled boxer 4. Keep up on maintenance and it's relatively cheap. The one thing you have to worry about is the timing chain and Associated tensioners, any of those fail and you might have a ruined block. In-my-mind regularly inspecting the timing assembly should be part of regular maintenance anyway. So yeah there kind of built like a brick house. Also a great platform for Boost, easily can get over 300 horsepower.

I have a ~225whp Mazdaspeed Miata and it is plenty of fun. It takes way too much extra work to make it track reliable though (mine is street only). All joking aside I bought a pet project my mechanic & machinist buddy built for shits and giggles in his spare time. Lets just say I owned it about 6 months before I sold it back to him lol. SO much fun I just couldn't keep it together. Hes a Geo/Suzuki man, has built a few trackers/samaris (or a mix of the 2 really lol) for rock crawling. Had a 3 cylinder Geo and engine needing rebuilding. He ported and polished the head, intake manifold & even the exhaust manifold. (You can buy peformance Suzuki 1.3 4 cylinder parts, not much for the 3 cylinder tho). Ported the throttle body out as big as possible, so much that he had to weld a piece of an old Alen wrench to hold the injector in the middle. Head and the block were both shaved as much as they could possibly be for compression and the rotating assembly had a total of 7.5 lbs cut off... Thats insane for a 3 cylinder. It was so drastic that when installing a new clutch it wasnt balanced right so I had to go get a spare crank he had cut to match and have the clutch rebalanced to match. Just a nightmare. Yes it made almost 100 hp N/A, and in a 2 door Geo Metro with about 500lbs cut out it was fun as hell to drive. It would rev so fast it would crack the air like a streetbike lmao. Seriously sounded that pissed off and with a 2.5 inch straight exhaust from header back it would pop a flame. Drawback is it was about 1/10 as reliable as my other stock Metros have been tho. You pay a price when you start stretching the rubber band too far lol

I think K swap is the ideal swap. Still a "stock" motor swap so reliability isn't affected like a turbo setup (more parts, more points of failure). LS looks like a repair nightmare, plus the supporting parts (ie. cooling) adds cost. BP motor is fine, but it's sinking money into a black hole; dollar for dollar K swap beats it.

LFX > J-series swap. The LFX swap kit is much more refined, and the transmission behind the LFX is designed to withstand the power. The J swap is a cool idea, but the kit is really really rough around the edges and clearance for the hood and oil pan is always going to be a challenge.

A buddy of mine has a turbo miata 1.8L bored out to a 2.1L stroker with a turbo kit on it and he was having serious traction issues as it put down a little over 340hp to the wheels on a 235 width tire. His solution was actually to use custom made spacers on the rear sub-frame to create a larger gap between the inside of the wheel well and hub assembly and was able to put a 285 on the rear, thing hooks and boogies now with R888's on the rear. If you're okay with a bit of front leaning rake the solution just works, the next best thing would be to tub your rear end and put some kind of trick suspension system in the rear but that would be well into the thousands vs. just a couple hundred bucks of some spacers.

I like the white NA,... personally I wouldn't get one but they're great for beginners, better then FWD.. because real fast track cars are RWD.. so it's easier to go from a Miata to a GT350 then a civic to a GT350.. I went from a B18 E.G., to a Audi RS4, to a E92, to finally a S550 Roushcharged Mustang GTPP, stock, with coilovers 305 square Nitto NT01 on VOLK TE37, 680whp.. needs just a few small things to make it perfect for track days love your content and I love the LS3 swapped Miata.. that would be great FUN and I hear the balance doesn't change too much?.. sticky tire and it would give the mustang some trouble in the turns until the straights come!! I like your channel. I have gotten a customers Jswap running last week. Lots of things I would do different. I moved it back 7 inches so it wasn't an audi quatro. Oil pan problems, cooling route problems, rack geometry problems, exposed starter and exhaust problems. J motor is cool, but the problems of turning it from front to rear wheel drive are fairly intense. The rocketworks kit is interesting but again some things that seem to need worked out like no AC, and a pretty involved oil pan solution. I am undertaking a kit conversion of my own for the jag motor. It might be end of next season, but maybe you could teach me the line around there for a couple days of track fun and review/drive mine when done. There is a wind tunnel up there somewhere that seems really interesting to try a few things in!!! Aren't they one of your channel sponsors?? 25 hour road trip!

A turbo on the stock 1.6 or 1.8 in the Miatas works damn good. Friend built one with a big 16g TDO5H turbo from an EvoIII. You can pick one up for less then 200$. Even cheaper then that if you settle for the "regular" 16g that come on some DSMs. Mitsubishi had some good turbos stock no doubt. Dont have to spend 1000$ on a turbo.
