Mica and Ink on Clay - Making Alcohol Ink Shine

My last video yielded some interesting results with the Lumiere paints - but what you didn’t see was a side effect of using just mica powders and alcohol inks - no Lumiere. Based on these results, I tried a whole new batch of clay using mica powders on the raw clay, baking it, and then painting with just alcohol ink. --- While I was at it, I also recorded the way I make my impressed clay components, so this is like two videos in one.
--- More info and details as always on the blog: gaylebird.com/2017/09/19/mica-...

"You want to put your hand right in front of the camera..." made me die of laughter. I relate so much to that. I have been trying to make videos and I have a habit of forgetting and getting too into the project itself forgetting that my hands are completely in the way. I loved this video. Thank you!!!

Great video! Thanks for sharing this wonderful technique. Truly appreciate your approaches for saving your hands. I have wrist issues & have considered giving clay up, but taking steps to minimize stress will help, I'm sure. Glad you showed conditioning the clay; now I know what the clay is supposed to look like when it's conditioned enough .

This was amazing. The whole video I kept thinking, "well that looks OK.." Them BAM! They dry and look like they were made my angels! This is absolutely beautiful end results. I LOVE using stamp pads with polymer clay. I tear them off their blocks and roll a pin over them, atop clay. It works amazingly well! Just apply even pressure, or use things on side of the rolling pin for an even effect.

Gayle - Someone posted your video on my pc group, and I was so happy to see your intro video and learn about this amazing success story from a fellow Canadian - and a Cape Breton girl, to boot - one of the most creative parts of the country! I look forward to seeing more videos. You mentioned learning about colour, and that intrigues me in particular. I work in mixed media - pc, ai, paint, mica powders, metal charms, and I know I have a lot to learn from you. My very best wishes for success. (I'm in Montreal but have family in Cape Breton ;-)

I'm just about to watch your video on making the botanical molds. I'm excited to try that. Last year I bought some botanical magnets made with real clay, and it never occurred to me that I could do something similar with pc! I'm going to see if I can find anything interesting by the side of the road.... But to answer your question, I've recently begun experimenting with pébéo paints. I don't know your expertise with that, but that's what I'm really interested in learning right now. I use the paints to cover lightswitch covers, magnets, boxes, etc., and they are so fun to use. I switched allegiance from alcohol inks (which are also great fun) as soon as I discovered them. But then, as you know, we are always rushing around after the latest enthusiasm. Eventually we start combining them - as with your mica powders and ai video. ;-)

Hey Gayle, I was re watching you video, and I was wondering if you have come up with a REPLACEMENT spray for PYMII? I tried Hellmars however the gloss spray is notorious for clogging or not spraying at all, and the matte finish take all the joy out of any mica powder coatings. I was wondering what your using now that PYMII is off the market. Thanks. Happy New Year from Oregon✌️

I've never seen anyone hammering a texture sheet before. I use a rolling pin. Or..if I'm feeling lazy,I'll just stack a few books on it and leave it for a minute. Perfectly even texture. I don't use the plastic wrap,it bevels the edges to much and makes it harder to resin. I also bake on ceramic tile,but place a sheet of parchment paper over it. It keeps the backs smooth. Videos like this are perfect for exploring other options
@GayleBird
@GayleBird 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! My hands hurt so pressure isn't an option, and I'm too impatient to wait for books lol... I don't resin these so I like the bevel. What resin do you use and how do you keep it from oozing over?

@@GayleBird if I need to resin something and it's curved,I'll use UV Doming resin and a hand held uv light to stop it from moving. For your hands, if applying pressure is in issue I would check out Mullers,Metal weighted hand held and used to squish or mull with little effort. Good luck

Hi, really enjoyed your video and plan to watch more of what you have created. Curious if the fade factor of alcohol ink ever bothers you. I just subbed and belled, now the comment and save. I will reserve sharing until I binge! LOL I have a few questions. 1. I have only heard one tutorial channel mention room temp. After nearly 3 years of "playing" with poly, I thought I had it figured out but humidity in my home seems to affect this issue. Any thoughts? 2. I am a messy artist, always have been. It seems my mistakes (for instance when my clay gets contaminated because I didn't clean the pasta machine well after using red or black), do you have any suggestions besides the bottle brush and a needle tool with a paper towel attached. I have tried a Q tip but I don't like the strings of cotton that get into the clay. I save every single bit of clean clay because I am disabled and pretty much house and bedridden so money is precious. 3. I just bought my first bottles of alcohol ink but am loathe to spend the kind of money Amazon wants for 99.8% Iso. We tried the local pharmacy and some hardware stores. No one has it. Any suggestions? (I do have Prime because all my gifts and craft needs are either through them or I force hubby to shop for me).

Could ypou please tell me the exact products you used, other than the mica powder and alcohol ink? I couldn't hear many of your words at the ends of your sentences, like what type of spray you have to use on the clay to make it shiny.

I noticed you didn’t do the thing everyone else says of always condition your clay fold side first.

You're curing the clay in the oven you cook food in? Please tell me they've decided that's safe! I'd LOVE to be able to use my big oven!
@GayleBird
@GayleBird 5 жыл бұрын
You can't use the same utensils or let the clay touch the oven but it was my understanding it was otherwise fine. I did get a toaster oven tho.

Do you have arthritis? I got it when I was 19. Try working more on good weather days since low pressure tends to aggravate arthritis and other joint injuries.
