The Real Truth About Health

• Michael Greger, MD, discusses the scientific literature on preventing the most common causes of death through a plant-based diet. Dr. Greger has scoured the world's scholarly literature on clinical nutrition and developed this new presentation based on the latest in cutting-edge research exploring the role diet may play in preventing, arresting, and even reversing some of our leading causes of death and disability. Death in America is largely a food born illness. Focusing on studies published in peer-reviewed scientific medical journals, Michael Greger, M.D., offers practical advice on how best to feed ourselves and our families to prevent, treat, and even reverse many of the top 15 killers in the United States. Dr. Michael Greger is one of America's leading experts on nutrition - someone who's been a big influence on people looking to lead healthy lives. Dr. Michael Greger is a licensed Medical Doctor in general practice specializing in clinical nutrition - and a founding member and fellow at the American College of Lifestyle Medicine. He's also the Director of Public Health and Animal Agriculture at the Humane Society of the United States, and the founder of the Nutrition Facts dot org blog. Dr. Greger is also the author of a number of bestselling books - including his latest "How Not to Die: Discover the Foods Scientifically Proven to Prevent and Reverse Disease.From the physician behind the wildly popular website NutritionFacts.org, Dr Greger reveals the groundbreaking scientific evidence behind the only diet that can prevent and reverse many of the causes of disease-related death.
The vast majority of premature deaths can be prevented through simple changes in diet and lifestyle. In How Not to Die, Dr. Michael Greger, the internationally-renowned nutrition expert, physician, and founder of NutritionFacts.org, examines the fifteen top causes of premature death in America-heart disease, various cancers, diabetes, Parkinson's, high blood pressure, and more-and explains how nutritional and lifestyle interventions can sometimes trump prescription pills and other pharmaceutical and surgical approaches, freeing us to live healthier lives.
The simple truth is that most doctors are good at treating acute illnesses but bad at preventing chronic disease. The fifteen leading causes of death claim the lives of 1.6 million Americans annually. This doesn't have to be the case. By following Dr. Greger's advice, all of it backed up by strong scientific evidence, you will learn which foods to eat and which lifestyle changes to make to live longer.
History of prostate cancer in your family? Put down that glass of milk and add flaxseed to your diet whenever you can. Have high blood pressure? Hibiscus tea can work better than a leading hypertensive drug-and without the side effects. Worried about heart disease (the number 1 killer in the United States)? Switch to a whole-food, plant-based diet, which has been repeatedly shown not just to prevent the disease but often stop it in its tracks.

One weak spot, I never see this guy working out??? To be truly healthy, I need to see some sense of athleticism, otherwise what's the point, I mean when you are at the level of not being in shape at all, is what I'm saying, at least express some form of being fit-if you are an expert, I need you to be pretty high on the list, or you can eat great all day, if you're not gaining the results whats the point....let's work on that........
@katharsis7957

onefoot7 he actually writes a lot of his articles and books while on the treadmill. there’s a video on KZfaq of him making a smoothie and while the blender was blending, he did 10 burpees. he’s not a bodybuilder obviously but I think he’s probably got great stamina and very flexible arteries due to walking and moving around A LOT everyday. I think in between all the research and writing articles and managing his website and writing a new book, he probably just doesn’t have the time to film his workouts so he can become a fitness guru on top of everything else. 😂 Apart from that, food definitely does more good to your body than movement so if you had to choose between a wfpb diet and being a couch potato vs. eating fast food and animal fat while exercising everyday, I’d certainly choose the first. But a combination of both, wfpb diet and exercise, is certainly the best way to go, you’re right.

Koula, so true. However, going from a westernized vegetarian diet to a mostly processed food vegan, my health STILL drastically improved. I didn't even know how bad dairy and all that was for me, so it took me by surprise. Now, when I started transitioning into a WHOLE FOODS plant based vegan diet, the change in my health was nothing short of extraordinary in just about every aspect you can think of or wouldn't even think to think of.

When I went vegan, I lost 5kgs within a month without doing any exercise. Then I started doing some exercise and lost another 5kgs within 2 weeks. It came as a shock at first and I thought there was something wrong with me despite me feeling great, but for 2 months after losing 10 kgs, my body weight seems to have stabilised. I bike 20kms in total on moderately hilly terrain daily to work without feeling fatigued on the next day. My wife thinks I am too skinny and that I look like a skeleton (she's exaggerating), I don't doubt her but I like being slim because it makes climbing hills so much easier and I am thankful that she totally supports the journey I am taking. I used to have dry skin patches in random places around my body but is now ALL gone. I seem to lose way less hair when I use shampoo. I also suffer from arthritis and used to take Humira to treat it, but I've been off Humira since I went vegan and my arthritis is now manageable WITHOUT medication. I still feel small amounts of pain, sometimes moderate but the main thing is that my arthritis CAN now improve rather than get worse and worse until I can no longer handle it. NEVER was there a point where my arthritis was improved without the use of drugs in the last 13 years of suffering from arthritis. I was brainwashed to think that I had to be on medication for the REST OF MY LIFE. Although it has only been about 3 months, I am hopeful that it will only improve from here on out.

I did not hear Dr. Greger answer the first question; the reason it is possible for a food like romaine lettuce to be >90% water but still be 17% protein is that the former figure is in reference to its total composition, but the latter is strictly in reference to its caloric content. Water has no calories, so it is irrelevant to the food's caloric content. We just look at the macronutrients in regard to calories: carbohydrate, protein, and fat. So romaine lettuce, calorically, is 68.1% carbohydrate, 17.4% protein, and 14.5% fat.

@keep7smiling
@keep7smiling 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheKetsa That really depends on the cut of meat. Lean chicken breast has like 21% protein (and 79% water respectively), whereas some fatty pork belly f.e. is like around 50% fat, 10% protein and 40% water.

Thorsten, chicken breast could have more than that if it's pumped up with saline as it so often is without disclosure. When it is, a "natural" chicken breast can have more salt than a bag of potato chips and the person buying and eating the remains of the poor chicken is none the wiser.

I think what that first lady was having difficulty understanding is that romaine lettuce is 95% water and 5% macro be weight, but within that 5% amount it is predominantly protein (74% iirc). So if she is eating 1 pound = 16 oz = 453 grams of bagged salad at a meal, only 5% of that is non-water. So the math would work out to 22.6 grams (5% of total) being macro ingredients and (74% of macro) equates to *16.72 grams being a complete protein*... which contributes to her daily protein requirements.

The same thing that happened to me that happened to the last person who spoke to Dr. Greger. All of my health issues are gone, and I have never felt better and happier. And I only exercise for 15 minutes a day, either high intensity interval jogging or kettlebell training. 15 minutes. And actually, it's really only 4 minutes of intensive jogging or kettlebell lifting. My only concern is that if parents put their children on this diet, they must make sure that the children have proper nutrition, because children may not eat enough calories (as Dr. Greger said) or nutrients like calcium. I've heard that a parent has been incarcerated for neglect because the children had low calcium. I don't know the details and other circumstances, except that this was a low income family.

Nathan Pritikin, who Gregor often mentions as an inspiration, said that more than 16% of your diet in protein leads to calcium imbalance. High protein diets have been linked to decreased lifespan. So while I get the point that the source of the macro nutrients is most important, I think there is some value to having an idea what macro nutrient breakdown you are on. A vegan ketogenic diet will not be as good as a Mcdougall style diet high in carbs and starches IMO.
@yams4610
@yams4610 6 жыл бұрын
Its Nathan Pritikin btw
@hiddenbayes
@hiddenbayes 6 жыл бұрын
That was according to the best available evidence when Nathan Pritikin was alive. What happened was researchers saw increased calcium excretion on higher protein diets and thought it was coming from bone. According to more carefully done newer research we now know that what actually happens is protein increases calcium absorption, so that additional excreted calcium was coming from the diet.

Cool info about pubmed....Dr. Greger talks fast, Dr. Fuhrman is like that too. When someone's mind can retain a lot of info, like a human encyclopedia, to sort all that data and the interconnections between them and then verbalize them coherently and relevantly in context, that can make one talk fast. If you can follow them coherently, it's probably because you think like that too, lol

He totally didn't understand or answer the very first question. Broccoli can be both 11% protein and 98% water because the 11% protein is a ratio of calories whilst the 98% of water is by weight. All food has a large proportion of water, but we record its proportions by caloric ratios.

He. sometimes, gets so excited that he forgets to answer the question as he does a complete mind dump. 98% water by weight and 17% protein means 17% of the calories in romaine comes from protein. Still love ya' Greger, but get to the point....

"BTW, according to multiple sources, lettuce has 28% of its Calories from protein." And according to other sources, romaine comes in at 17.4%, iceberg 15.7%, red leaf lettuce 32.5%, bibb lettuce 25.2% really depends on the lettuce variety. It appears that Greger was likely thinking about romaine which makes sense since romaine is one of the good lettuces that he talks about in some of the nutritionfacts videos.

By weight there is a very small percentage of protein in lettuce, however the protein that is there is complete. The rest is water - as he said I don’t know what did he say 98% water or 75% water? The point is that pound for pound there is very little actual protein in lettuce. That doesn’t mean it’s not a complete protein, and it is starting to be known that we Really don’t need as much protein as is reported and we are even healthier with less protein because then our bodies will process fat for energy.

The 98% water comment was interesting..Protein is not measured by percentage it's measured by grams. So it's like comparing oranges to apples(yes that is a joke) so even though it is 98% water it still contains grams of protein. "One cup of chopped broccoli has 2.57 grams of protein. This means by eating that amount men get 5 percent of their recommended daily intake of 56 grams, while women get 6 percent of the 46 grams of protein they should consume daily. The best part about getting protein from broccoli is that you also get fiber and nutrients, but no fat and few calories." from healthyeating.sfgate.com/much-protein-broccoli-6613.html. People are seriously worried about side-effects for no reason. The only difference between a vegan diet and an omnivore's is that the vegan has to supplement with B-12 and get a moderate intake of iodine. Other than that, you get everything you need through beans, potatoes, legumes, leafy greens, etc.

UnknownXV Potatoes are only 6 E% protein which is not sufficient in retaining muscle mass (assuming you come from a diet that has sufficient protein) long term on maintenace calories. Fruits are even lower inprotein. You need at least 10 E% protein of your maintenance to be able to stay on positive nitrogen balance and not lose muscle mass. I wasn't talking about broccoli as you can read I said "no greens". Broccoli is 20 E% protein so you would have to eat 2 kg of broccoli and 2 kg of potatoes to get 10 E% of protein on a 2200 kcal diet. HDvids101 heme iron is more readily absorbable but also stores in fat deposits in body and can become dangerous. Non-heme is found in leafy greens lentils grains blackstrap molasses, surprisingly there is a lot in powdered tumeric as well. Combine with vitamin C to help absorption.

I have a feeling someone will pop up and say "black strap molasses". Greger gave it as a "good source of calcium" in Bite Sized Vegans Calcium video. Edit : oh... There's John Woo above my comment with black strap molasses. I didn't even see his one before I replied. Molasses seems popular with the Greger crowd. Yeah, but. It's high carb and very sticky. Cant see most people doing well on it. That's probably why they made it slave food. The masters knew it was no good In anything but very small quantities. Maybe lentils for iron? Plus vitamin C for absorption. That's the current stance anyway. I'm ex vegan. Scares me how I know more since leaving. Glad you already know about different forms of iron. That's a good start. I recommend you watch both vegan and ex vegan videos. So you avoid the pitfalls. Too much vegan media is just a sales pitch. It doesn't actually tell you what you really need to know to make it work. That's cruel.

HDvids101 unless you have a problem converting ala to DHA omega's are not hard to attain. Supplementation is merely eating algae in which case one could grow it if they had the ability to. In regards to iron... There are many tests showing that vegans have perfectly fine iron levels compared to meat-eaters. I've gotten my iron check numerous times, completely fine. B12, well that is a consequence of eating clean vegetables and water not infected with cholera and other infectious diseases. A penny a day keeps the doctor away in that regard. A bit of liposomal cyano cobalamin in spray form. The price you pay for clean produce.
